Bad Brains "I and I Survived" (Dub)
By Philip Booth
Bad Brains, reggae-tinted guitar thrashers before that sort of thing was cool, or lucrative, reunited in 1995 to record for Madonna’s label; the disc stiffed and the support tour was marred by ego clashes. Two decades after their cassette-only debut, and following the release of this year’s hard-to-find "Soul Brains" live disc, the heaviest of the heavy are back. Charismatic singer H.R. is in absentia for the Washington, D.C. band’s first-ever dub project.
Gary "Dr. Know" Miller’s chain-sawing six-string volleys duly surface in remakes of 1983’s "How Low Can a Punk Get?" and 1989’s "Gene Machine." Elsewhere, it’s about soul-deep grooves and trippy atmospherics, chill-out music deserving of respect in the morning, after the voyage back down. Horn lines linger in the air at the start of "Jah Love" before echoing into the soundscape and making way for the rhythmic incantations of Daryl Jenifer’s bass thud and delay and drummer Earl Hudson’s reverberating snare thwack.
"I and I Survive," also from 1983 and an apropos comment on the musicians’ faith in their cause, like several other tracks here is all rootsy riddims, jazzy back-and-forth riffs and alternating rhythm and brass drop-outs, and earthy keyboards - in other words, the classic dub vibe. The "Shiner Massive" mix of the title track does it edgier, with more sonic abrasives and mini-raps. Feels real. Feels right.

History Philip comes to knifemaking through the fine arts. He is an award winning painter, printmaker and knifemaker, working in the mediums of oil painting and etching. At 10 years old he made his first knife by hammering a 16 penny spike and wrapping the handle with tape. Not much of a knife but at 10 years, a huge accomplishment. Philip sold his first knife in 1991 and is now a full-time maker and probationary member of The Knifemakers' Guild.

POST-EQUINOX SPECTRA
by Philip Booth Still weeks to ice-out
in upcountry lakes. Here
on the coast, salt-ice gets lifted off coves
by gales and steep wave-
lengths. Tides flow hard between the mainland
and islands. Out in
the Thorofare, two fish- boats, blurred in thin rain,
march back and forth like
small boys' small toys. Off Stump Cove, a red boat
and yellow boat slowly wallow, dragging the bottom for scallops. Across old tides, Deer Isle and Little Deer loom tall as spruce, dark as deer in their winter coats. At the end of whatever day this still is, a sky like pleated gray silk begins to glint with thin gold caught behind it: this last day of March or April Fools' first. [Return to BPJ homepage]

Russell Astley
Lifelines: Selected Poems 1950-1999 is the most comprehensive gathering to date of Philip Booth's poetry of the last millennium. Nine of his previous volumes (several no longer in print) are represented in sections numbered in chronological order. The last section, the tenth, also called Lifelines , is made up of poems of the last five years.
Reading the collection as a whole feels a little like leafing through someone's personal journal: quick takes of people, happenings, land- and seascapes and a self, recorded through half a century by a solitary observer not unlike Booth's role-model Thoreau or his teacher Robert Frost.
There are poems that reflect on Booth's aging, his father's death, his mother's madness, a daughter's first swimming lesson. There are elegies for neighbors (e.g., Robert Lowell) and friends (e.g., Hannah Arendt). There are poems that speak of the approaching millennium in apocalyptic tones (e.g: "Zeros,""The Turn of the Century," among others). "Species," though not a Y2K poem, may remind some readers of a certain Hitchcock movie: it deals with the extinction of humanity as witnessed by the birds.

Essays that reveal the pulses of a teacher's mind and a poet's heart. As one of Robert Frost's last students, Philip Booth has for more than four decades written poems prized for their clarity and depth. As founder of the Syracuse University Creative Writing Program, he has been a crucial influence in the early stages of such individually distinguished poets as Thomas Centolella, Stephen Dunn, Carol Frost, Brooks Haxton, Larry Levis, Jane Mead, Jay Meek, Susan Mitchel, Barbara Moore, and Lucia Perillo. The New York Times Book Review has said that "anyone who cares about poetry knows his work." Gathering together selections from his notebooks, dreamlogs, memoirs, and essays of such poets as Frost, Robert Lowell and George Oppen, Trying to Say It particularly focuses on the ways that the tension between in-formed structures and lineation create poems whichin all sensesmove. Employing the Thoreauvian sense of place for which his poetry is known, Booth probes the nature of poetry itself, as well as the poetry of natureyielding insights that are rooted in the acute observation that catalyzes imagination. Infused with a restless spirit in search of a moving language commensurate with the complexity of being fully alive, the essays collected in
