BEST MUSIC BOOKS of 2002
By Philip Booth
"A Long Strange Trip," by Dennis McNally (Broadway Books, $30) - McNally, an American history scholar and author of a first-rate biography of Jack Kerouac, wore his other hat, as the Grateful Dead's longtime publicist, for this absorbing account of the quintessential jam band. The Dead split in 1995, following leader Jerry Garcia's death and well after the group's creative energy had been exhausted. McNally wisely focuses on the Dead's beginnings in San Francisco, and the way Garcia, Bob Weir, Phil Lesh and their bandmates brilliantly created an improvised, always mutating mix of American rock, roots and folk music. McNally offers an exhilarating you-were-there trip back to the Dead's psychedelics-fueled glory days, and a sad glimpse at Garcia's heroin-abetted decline.

The mystery deepens: How might a hitherto unknown notebook containing poetry by Philip Larkin have ended up on its way to a tip, instead of among the archives of the city's university library, which he ran for almost thirty years? James Booth, general secretary of the Philip Larkin Society, has seen the hardback A5 volume during a meeting in a Hull pub with Chris Jackson, who claims he bought it from a man called John. John, it is said, knew someone who worked for the furniture removers who cleared out Larkin's house in Newland Park, Hull. This was after the Larkin Society had removed the final items, following the death in 2001 of Monica Jones. Larkin's companion since 1946, Monica went to live at the house before he died in 1985. In her will she left some of his personal possessions to the university's Brynmor Jones Library. Mr Jackson claims that Professor Booth, an acknowledged expert on Larkin, was allowed to see only two pages of the notebook during his meeting with him. But Professor Booth says that he turned over every page and made quick notes of everything he saw in it. Unfortunately, however, Mr Jackson refused to give him photocopies of the contents. Based on what he saw of the manuscripts of two poems - "Bridge for the Living," and "Morning at last: there in the snow" - Professor Booth was convinced that the book was genuine.

Large Celtic Knot Coat of Arms Saint Who? Saint Who Finished ... Booth-Forbes
A Large Celtic Knot
This piece is a large version of the earlier "Pictish Celtic Knot". This knot is all came construction, expandable and measures 20 inches by 24 inches. The background is a Kokomo granite glass and the ribbon is four different clear textured glasses. The picture as usual does not do it justice.
A Coat of Arms
A very simple came construction using a new dimension in my glass techniques. Etching! If you squint you can see medieval heraldic lions on the yellow glass. I did not paint the etchings because in real life they are nicer that way and anyhow I ran out of black paint!
Saint Who ?
A not so simple project! It is actually four panes that will be framed and will be twelve inches wide by thirty six inches long. Foil construction for the design and came for the frame. Can I do it?
Saint Crankyface
Here he is! Saint Crankyface! Four panels as promised of a medieval church window somewhere in the world. The etching and painting adds something. Best seen in reflected light. The Saint won first place at the Ephrata Craft Fair in 2002.
Sunny Disposition
A "Sunny Disposition" is a beveled, etched and painted center surrounded by yellow and white glass with yellow jewels. Another lousy picture but a pretty suncatcher!

This collection of short fiction spans the first twelve years of Farmer's published writing. Here you will encounter such gems as "Mother", the story of a homesick young man who adopts a bizarre alien as his parent and protector; "The Alley Man", about the last living Neanderthal and a twentieth-century woman's strange attraction to him; and the disturbing "My Sister's Brother", in which the humanlike beauty of an alien creature tests an Earthman's deepest prejudices when he discovers the true nature of her sexuality. All these stories reveal a sensitivity in dealing with provocative themes that marks their author as an outstanding innovator and a serious writer of science fiction at its best and most thoughtful. It is not my intention to write history, for many others have done that, but merely want to mention such matters that I was directly connected with. John Brown was condemned to be hung in December by the court that met in the city of Charlestown, Jefferson County, now W. Va. There was a rumor that a party was organizing in the North to rescue John Brown; therefore, the Governor again called out the State Militia to go. The 1st Regiment assembled on Broad St. near the depot, which was then on the corner of 8th where the old Bijou now standsthat was one Saturday night about the 1st of December, in the year 1859. Many of us were surprised to see John Wilkes Booth, who was then acting in the Marshall Theatre, in a Richmond Gray uniform. We afterwards were informed that he joined the Company in order to go along with us. He is the same John Wilkes Booth who shot Abe Lincoln just after the way. We got to Charlestown and there we met a great many soldiers from the whole State of Virginia. Among them were many who have made History since: General Lee, J.E.B. Stewart, and many others.

Without Metaphysics: The Poetry of Philip Larkin
    Brother Anthony (An Sonjae)
This paper was written in 1992. Since then a variety of significant studies have appeared, to say nothing of the poet's Letters and a Biography. Philip Larkin's poetry has begun to provoke quite a harvest of academic studies, in England at least. With the translation of some of his major poems by Professor Kim Chong-kil, and the defence this year of a doctoral dissertation on "Realism in Larkin's Poetry" by Kim Ki-Yeong at Korea University, he can be considered to have been officially "discovered" in Korea, too. There still remains, though, considerable doubt as to the critical approach most suited to his poetry. More broadly, Larkin's work is a paradigm of all the literature produced in modern Britain, and elsewhere too: it is often difficult to get into, and the busy reader cannot help wondering if it is worth the effort. This paper introduces a few recent studies, tries to characterize Larkin's work, and in particular its world-view without Metaphysics. Two poems, that Larkin once chose to represent his work in an anthology, will serve to begin with. They were written two years apart, in 1960 and 1962:

Gym slips and hockey sticks: Philip Larkin's schoolgirl stories Last year details emerged of two previously unseen erotic novellas written by Philip Larkin while an undergraduate at Oxford. In the latest exclusive online essay from the London Review of Books, Jenny Diski examines Larkin's newly-published juvenilia and questions whether such literary excavation is simply barrel-scraping. Thursday May 16, 2002
The Guardian Trouble at Willow Gables and Other Fictions by Philip Larkin, edited by James Booth.
Faber, 498 pp., £20, 6 May, 571 20234 7 The trouble with making a career around Larkin is that the output is quite small, and others, Andrew Motion and Anthony Thwaite, have already picked the meat out of the life. What's left after a couple of books of literary criticism wouldn't amount to a serious life's work for a mayfly. Or shouldn't. There is, however, an unmistakable reverential quality in the scholarly apparatus. The artefacts with which the acolyte is working are so precious as to require the minutest description of their physical reality. They are relics, touched by and touching the life of an exceptional being, like a sliver of the true cross. We are not told what width lies between the staples. There must be some priestly secrets or the keepers of the truth would have no function at all.
