At his father's insistence young Boswell reluctantly studied law. Admitted to the bar in 1766, he practiced throughout his life, but his true interest was in a literary career and in associating with the great men of his day. Boswell first met Samuel Johnson on a trip to London in 1763. The same year he traveled about the Continent, where he made the acquaintance of Rousseau and Voltaire. He achieved literary fame with his Account of Corsica (1768), based on his visit to that island and on his acquaintance with the Corsican patriot Pasquale Paoli. Boswell married his cousin Margaret Montgomerie in 1769. In 1773 he became a member of Johnson's club, to which Burke, Garrick, Reynolds, and Goldsmith belonged. Later that year he and Johnson toured Scotland, a visit Boswell described in The Journal of a Tour of the Hebrides with Samuel Johnson, LL.D.

    Concepts of Authorship

"While the writings of Samuel Johnson and James Boswell are central to this discussion, Frances Burney's Evelina and Mary Wollstonecraft's Mary are also briefly discussed." James Boswell visits Ferney
Read from Boswell's journal: "I took the coach for Ferney, the seat of the illustrious Monsieur de Voltaire. I was in true spirits, the earth was covered with snow, I surveyed wild nature with a noble eye. I called up all the grand ideas which I have ever entertained of Voltaire." The Yale Editions of the Private Papers of James Boswell "With later acquisitions, the collection runs to some fifteen thousand itemsincluding Boswell's correspondence of about 6,000 letters, the private journals he kept for more than thirty years, as well as unpublished manuscripts, legal papers, account books, five centuries of family estate papers, private notes, printed materials, and a variety of ephemera."

Boswell, James (1740-1795) A Scotch writer and lawyer, famous for his Life of Samuel Johnson . He came to London from Scotland, and devoted himself assiduously to studying Johnsons character, spending some years in close intimacy with the great lexicographer. His subject was an anti-Scot who virulence Boswell had somewhat softened during their tour of Scotland some years earlier. The book is considered by some to be the best biography ever written. Boswell left so many letter sand diaries that perhaps more is known about him than any other 18 th Century man. A "Boswell factory" at Yale employs several people, full-time, sifting through the papers. Return to B Index

James Boswell BOSWELL, JAMES, the friend and biographer of Dr Samuel Johnson, was born at Edinburgh, October 29, 1740. th May, 1504, is an entry, "Item, to Thomas Boswell , he laid downe in Leith to the wife of the kingis innis, and to the boy rane the kingis hors, 18s." On the 2 nd August, is the following: "Item, for twa hidis to be jakkis to Thomas Boswell and Watte Trumbull, agane the Raid of Eskdale, (an expedition against the border thieves,) 56s." On the 1 st of January, 1504-5, "Item, to Thomas Boswell and Pate Sinclair to by thaim daunsing geir, 28s." Under December 31 st , 1505, "Item, to 30 dosane of bellis for dansaris, delyverit to Thomas Boswell, 4l, 10s." Mr. Pitcairn, from whose valuable "Collection of Criminal Trials" these extracts are made, seems to think that Thomas Boswell was a minstrel nd wife, a daughter of Sir Archibald Stewart of Blackhall); Cunningham of Glengarnock; Hamilton of Dalzell; Earl of Kincardine; Colonel John Erskine, grandson of the lord treasurer Earl of Mar. James Boswell was the eldest son of Alexander Boswell of Auchinleck, and of Euphemia Erskine. [He had two brothers; John, a lieutenant in the army; David, a merchant of Valencia in Spain.] The father was an advocate in good practice at the Scottish bar; who was, in 1754, elevated to the bench, taking, on that occasion, the designation of Lord Auchinleck. James Boswell, father of Lord Auchinleck, had also been a Scottish barrister, and, as we learn from Lord Kames, one of the best of his time; his wife was a daughter of Alexander Bruce, second Earl of Kincardine, whose mother was Veronica, a daughter of the noble house of Sommelsdyk in Holland. For an account of Auchinleck, reference may be made to Johnson’s Journey to the Western Islands.

    James Boswell
Boswell was born in Edinburgh on 29th October 1740, the eldest son of Alexander and Euphemia Boswell . His father was an Ayrshire laird and advocate who, on appointment to the Court of Session in 1754, took the judicial title of Lord Auchinleck Boswell studied at Edinburgh and Glasgow Universities, his father intending him for a career as an advocate, although his own ambitions were for a literary or a military career. He ran off to London in 1760 and was received into the Roman Catholic church. He was persuaded that this James Boswell conversion, which would have precluded public office or professional advancement, was unwise and after a taste of the wilder side of London life returned home to his studies and continuing tension with his father. Eventually, in 1762, he was permitted to pay an extended visit to London, where he made full use of his freedom, overindulging in drink and sex. However in Davies 's bookshop in May 1763 he met the man who was to become the central figure in his life - Samuel Johnson . Their opening conversation was unpromising: Boswell: "Mr Johnson, indeed I come from Scotland, but I cannot help it."

    Boswell, James
29.10.1740 Edimburgo, 19.5.1795 Londra.
