61. David Hall's Inside View
should be noted that even though coins continue to appreciate over the long term, there are some pretty healthy swings between the cyclical tops and bottoms.

BACK NEXT PAGE 4 Numismatic Fact of Life Number Eight:
THERE ARE NO BARGAINS Fact:
Fact: Dealers do not sell coins under market. There's no explanation necessary on this one. Just think about it.
Fact: Dealers need to make a profit to stay in business. Most reputable dealers have gross profit margins of between 20% and 25%. The one exception to this is generic gold coins and other bullion related issues, both of which sell at smaller margins. This is a fact of the marketplace and it's totally okay for dealers to make a profit. In fact, I know of no retail dealer working on profit margins below 20% that has ever stayed in business for more than a few years. If a dealer tells you he's working on less than 20%, he's probably lying to you about other things as well.
Fact: Bargain hunting is one of the biggest traps in the coin market. Bargain hunting will lead you to focusing on the wrong approach to rare coins. Remember my earlier analogy about the golf swing and short term trading in the stock market. If you look for bargains, you will buy the wrong coins for the wrong reasons.
Strategy: 1. Recognizing the reality of Numismatic Fact of Life Number Eight doesn't mean you should be a patsy. Pay attention to price and don't overpay, but make your primary focus buying coins because they are rare, high quality, important, beautiful, have good potential, and most importantly, fit into your long term plans.

How To Play the Spoons How to Play the Jaw Harp " The Roots of Mountain Music " Music Mentors and Friends
HOW TO PLAY THE SPOONS
Let's start by holding the bottom spoon. Put it between your pointer finger and your middle finger. Wrap your middle finger around the back of the spoon and press the edge of it against your palm. All you are trying to do here is to get a good grip on the back of the spoon. Let the handle of the spoon rest on the middle joint of the middle finger...just as it is in the photo. Now, hold the top spoon between your thumb and your first finger. It should go across the middle bone of your pointer finger...as in the photo. The pointer finger wraps around the back of the spoon and holds it tightly against your palm (just like your middle finger is doing with bottom spoon). The thumb should press down on top giving you a firm grip. The bottoms of the spoon bowls should be back to back. Basically, you're making a fist around the spoons to hold them tightly in your hand...Don't let go when you start to play!

    Oglethorpe's Dream
    A Picture of Georgia
    Diane Kirkland and David Bottoms
A panoramic view of the state in words and images Oglethorpe's Dream unites the award-winning photography of Diane Kirkland with the beautifully powerful writing of David Bottoms, Georgia's poet laureate. The result is a stunning portrait of the lands, waters, culture, and people of Georgia. From the sea islands to the cities, from the wiregrass to the mountain forests, Kirkland gives us a gallery of spectacular images showcasing the state in its breadth, beauty, and diversity. Marrying landscape to history, Bottoms gives voice to a people filled with courage, pain, conviction, and, above all, hope. Together they capture the natural beauty of the diverse landscape, the richness of the state's storied past, and the essence of its spirited people. "Isn't that what you always hoped for," Bottoms writes, "to find a place . . . and yourself in that place?" His poems have appeared in The New Yorker, Harper's, The Paris Review, Poetry

Dr. David Legler, CLIVAR Project Office and
Dr. Robert Weller, Co-Chair CLIVAR SSC.
    Dear David, David and Bob:
We are writing to express our concerns about the current plans for the US CLIVAR program as expressed in the US CLIVAR documents, especially the US CLIVAR Implementation plan, the Pacific PBECS plan and the Pacific Implementation plan. We trust that you will pass these concerns on to the CLIVAR SSC and hopefully discuss them at the next SSC meeting. This strategy is summarized by the diagram shown below:
Looking over the US CLIVAR documents, we see much of the enabling and supporting activities in the outer ring of the implementation diagram, but little of the concentration on the phenomena of interest. The elucidation of global phenomena is the essence of CLIVAR, but I find little in the US plan that shows us the path to unraveling these global scale climate phenomena. It seems to us that we learned three lessons from doing the TOGA program. The first was to focus on a phenomenon and do whatever it takes to elucidate that phenomenon. The second is that getting models and observations together at a very early stage of the program (even when premature) is the surest road to progress. The third is that the right combination of top down organization and bottoms up enthusiasm is needed to solve complex problems. The present planned activities of US CLIVAR present the right mix of top down organization and largely contributes to the outer ring the diagram. We do not see, however, that doing
