History and Nominations
In 1975 the CAA reinstated its awards for literary achievement, a program originally begun in 1937 with the creation of the Governor-General's medals for literature. The objective of reinstatement of the awards was to honour writing that achieves literary excellence without sacrificing popular appeal. The CAA Award for Poetry and Drama (for any medium) were funded by Harlequin Enterprises of Toronto from 1975 to 1997. In 1998, they were funded by a member of the CAA who chooses to remain anonymous. Throughout their existence, these CAA Awards for Adult Literature have been designed as objective rewards for excellence. Judging is carried out by panels selected in confidence. No short lists are published. The Journal (CBC) has referred to them as "The major awards given annually by authors to authors."

Canada's poet laureate weighs in on war

VANCOUVER - Canada's poet laureate has added his voice and his words to a growing movement of poets against war. George Bowering has allowed a poem he wrote in 1963 to be reprinted. He had penned the "Good Prospects" in response to the Moscow Test Ban Treaty. Traditionally, poets laureate don't weigh in on political policy, but Bowering has joined with others who are giving their opinion, including U.S. poet laureate Billy Collins and Britain's Andrew Motion. More than 3,600 anti-war poems have been contributed to a Web site established by Copper Canyon Press in the U.S. Bowering says he hopes his poem will be added to the collection. "I can't imagine a poet being a toady for the war-mongers. It just doesn't seem possible," said Bowering.

Poet laureate, spoken word poets clash
Last Updated 2003-01-06 00:00:00.0
Trevor Hughes, The Arts Report George Bowering

VANCOUVER - Canada's newly appointed poet laureate has started a war of words with a spoken word poet based in Vancouver. In a recent Globe and Mail article, poet laureate George Bowering denounced slam, or spoken word, poetry and poetry competitions as "revolting." Treating poetry as a competition is "crude and extremely revolting", Bowering told the Globe Vancouver-based spoken word poet T. Paul Ste. Marie says he's angry, and has received dozens of e-mails from other frustrated slam poets. To Ste. Marie, who hosts and produces open mike sessions for spoken word artists, Bowering isn't following his job description. "Obviously this is shaking up his system," said Ste. Marie. "I mean, one of the roles and responsibilities of the parliamentary poet laureate is to sponsor poetry readings."

Wiebe and Bail: re making the story George Bowering
I sometimes think that the great subtext of Canadian and Australian literatures is the escape from colonial status in our histories; or vice versa. Thus the unusual preoccupation with national identity, and thus the recent turn of our fictions against history. For two hundred years the serious writer has been expected to turn a rebellious face to authority, anyway. The writer in a postcolonial culture, it seems to me, is an obvious agent of deconstruction. In western Canada, and in Australia, which is just about all Western, the most interesting fiction writers have noticed that even the popular cultural myths, those folkloric signs that would seem to assure us of the singularity of our environments, are negatives of the British European self-regard. There on the pitiless outback or the bald-headed prairie the admirable yokels laughingly perform deeds of stoical legend that no caparisoned (and envious) Limie or Pommie could even dream of. Our lived epics were the stuff for Boys' Own Annuals in damp Sussex parlours. We were allowed to create our dryland otherness. Thus it has become necessary for us grandsons of the pioneers to call into doubt our icons. To declare our selves we have to interrogate our Australiana and Canadiana. No decent intelligent Aussie I know sings Waltzing Matilda without savage inebriety; all sensible Canadians hope for an awkward unhorsing at the RCMP's musical ride. In new South Wales, Jean Bedford puts a subversive female centre into the saga of Ned Kelly. On the prairies, Robert Kroetsch refutes the garrison mentality regarding nature, encouraging his characters to fornicate merrily in the eye of a desert whirlwind.
