An important book for fans, a "so what?" for neophites

Bowles is a great writer and he has written better books. If you are new, have heard the murmurings, and are looking to be wowed, go with The Sheltering Sky. This is not his strongest plot or his strongest batch of characters; it is slow to get going and where exactly it gets to is up for debate.... Read more Love with a Few Hairs

Paul Bowles reads this classic suite of Moroccan kif stories that he recorded in Tangier, Morocco, in the Fall of 1978. Previously released as a 2 LP recording in 1981, and long sold out, these stories are now being made available again as a 2 CD audiobook. Bowles' accompanying essay for this recording ( which is printed in the included booklet and from which we have excerpted the fragment above)
"The new CD release, Paul Bowles Reads A Hundred Camels in the Courtyard . . . the results are almost as pristine as if you were sitting in Paul's lounge in the Immeuble Itessa, a fire crackling in the hearth, a long sebsi of Mrabet's Special Blend going around the room.
Paul Bowles may be gone to an oasis far beyond the rolling dunes, but "A Friend of the World," "The Wind at Beni Midar," "He of the Assembly" and "The Story of Lahcen and Idir" live on in Cadmus' wonderful CDs, complete with a fiery painting of the Djmaa el Fna by Bowles' friend, the late Brion Gysin.
Our master's voice, sibilant and whistling with age carried the inspirational authority of an old sage relating essential lore around the dying embers of a campfire in the Sahara. Something about hearing his tales rather than reading them carried the qualities of the high itself. The CDs are another way into the brilliance and clarity of Bowles' Moroccan visions. . . . Take my word for it, they are worth the journey."

Paul Bowles
Born 30th. December, 1910, in New York; died 18th. November, 1999, in Tangier, Morocco.
US writer and composer. Full name: Paul Frederick Bowles He was brought up on the border of New York and Long Island. His father, Claude Bowles, was a successful dentist. His mother was Rena Bowles. At the age of nine Paul Bowles wrote his first opera. When 18 he had his first work, Surreal Poetry , published in Eugene Jolas's Modernist magazine Transition in Paris. For a short while he attended art college because he thought that he wanted to be a painter. He changed his mind and in 1928 he transferred to the University of Virginia, but in his first term he dropped out and moved to Paris where he worked on the switchboard of the International Herald Tribune . At a time when he was losing confidence in his poetry he met Nadia Boulanger who inspired him musically. In 1929 he returned to the USA and worked on his music. He sought out Nadia Boulanger's pupil Aaron Copeland, who gave Paul Bowles daily lessons in composition. Paul Bowles completed his first year studies at the University of Virginia, but then concentrated on music, Christopher Isherwood , Stephen Spender, and Jean Rhys. Christopher Isherwood's novels based in Berlin include the character Sally Bowles. The surname was taken from Paul Bowles but the character was inspired by Jean Rhys. In the summer of 1931 Paul Bowles visited

"Un momento después estaba en la torre, escuchando a las arañas
reparar las telas que ellas habían estropeado. Pasaría mucho,
mucho tiempo hasta que pudiera introducirse en la conciencia de otro ser.
Mucho, mucho tiempo: quizá la eternidad."
