TREKS NOT TAKEN
by Steven R. Boyett
Sneaker Press/Midnight Graffiti, ISBN 1-882813-05-7, 1996, US$12.95
A book review by Evelyn C. Leeper
"Call me irresponsible. Some years agothe stardate is unimportant nowthe irresistible motivation of several outstanding warrants and the certainty of my impecunious nature, caused me to enlist about a Federation starship, for just as some men hold the briny Sea in their hearts, I have empty Space in my head." That's just one sample from this book of twenty selections, showing how some famous authors might have written STAR TREK: THE NEXT GENERATION, had Hollywood waved the money in front of them. My only real complaint with this is that Boyett concentrated more on modern authors than on the authors of the so-called Western Canon. I would have liked to see Shakespeare's "Merry Ensigns of Windsor," or Jane Austen's "Mansfield Trek" or Charles Dickens's "Data Copperfield" or even George Eliot's "Romulan." (And I would have thought that "The Brothers Data" by Dostoyevsky was an obvious entry.) But we do have Melville, Joyce, Hemingway, and Conrad. We also have Rice, Clancy, Vonnegut, and Dr. Seuss. I read only the stories for those authors with whom I had some familiarity (which was about three-quarters of them). And for these Boyett captured the style remarkably well, considering the wide range they cover. For anyone who enjoys reading a wide variety of authors and styles, I highly recommend this book. If you can't find it in your local bookstore, it can be ordered from Mark Ziesing (P. O. Box 76, Shingletown CA 96088

Treks Not Taken - Steven R. Boyett
This book is a series of short stories; they are Star Trek the Next Generation parodies. The premise of the book is what if a bunch of very well known authors had written episodes of Star Trek.
There is a short preamble about the number of episodes that were made and then it goes on to say how there was this crate of scripts that were never made into episodes later discovered by a janitor cleaning out the studios. Obviously that is a load of crap, but it is a nice lead into the stories.
The cover has a very odd texture, a picture of some planets and a flying fountain pen.
In all there are twenty stories, all crammed into a book less than 200 pages long. As a whole it is very funny collection of short stories really aimed at the star trek fan.
    The stories included are:
-The Crusher in the Rye - not by J.D. Salinger
-A Clockwork Data - not by Anthony Burgess
-One Beamed onto the Cuckoo's Nest - not by Ken Keysey
-Jurassic Trek - not by Michael Crichton
-The Ship Also Rises - not by Ernest Hemingway
-Less Than Data - not by Bret Easton Ellis -Trek-22 - not by Joseph Heller -All the Pretty Humans - not by Cormac McCarthy -Lady Fed - not by Jackie Collins -A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Fan - not by James Joyce -The Vampire LeForge - not by Anne Rice -Even Captains Get the Blues - not by Tom Robbins -Q Clearance - not by Tom Clancy -Moby Trek (abridged) - not by Herman Melville -The Trekking - not by Stephen King

    Unicorn Quotes
Here are a number of quotes about unicorns that I've collected over the years. Here are some new quotes:
"I'll capture gentle zebras / for your steeds and fill the stable with every kind of unicorn."
Love Song of Night and Day
"The best use for a unicorn's horn is to adorn a unicorn."
    Source unknown
"Unicorns don't care if you believe in them any more than you care if they believe in you."
    Source unknown
"It was a heavy-boned face, with ridges etched in darkest walnut instead of gleaming highlights, and with odd, icy eyes that abruptly reminded her that unicorns were not Tame. Wild magic, free always, of what man might intend or wish for it."
    Doranna Durgin; Touched By Magic
" 'I thought unicorns were more ... fluffy.'
'See clear! Don't let the glamour get you! See what's in front of your eyes! It's a damn great horse with a horn on the end!' said Granny." Terry Pratchett; Lords and Ladies "When God created the earth, He made a river which flowed from the Garden of Eden... Then God told Adam to name the animals... And the first animal he named was the unicorn. When the Lord heard the name Adam had spoken, he reached down and touched the tip of the single horn growing from the animal's forehead. From that moment on, the unicorn was elevated above other beasts." Nancy Hathaway; The Unicorn

    Apocalyptic Fiction
    Apocalyptic, Post-Apocalyptic and Doomsday Fiction
I became interested in fiction that deals with the end of society as we know it when I read Stephen King's The Stand. I recently realized that I was not alone in this interest through the discovery of two web pages covering the topic of apocalyptic fiction. I developed my own list through pilfering said pages and from recommendations by friends and librarians. I am sure that some of the titles are not true to the list and will remove them if deemed necessary. A word of warningreading more than two of these books in succession can effect your decision making abilitiesShould I spend money on dinner and a movie or purchase a case of beef jerky.
