Writing 3/5 While this book is well written, and amusing in places, I found it to be bleak depressing and obnoxious. The book largely takes place in Southern California during the last few decades and in a 2025 in which Climate Change has arrived with a vengeance. Basically in the recent past the main character becomes a direct-action oriented environmental activist and conserves nothing via his efforts, except loosing his freedom and family. While in the future, humanity has trashed the planet, killing off most large animals, and not doing so well itself. (These comments do not give away the plot of the book as all of this is presented in the first few chapters of the book). The environmental message of the book appears to be we are destroying the planet, life, and ourselves, but that any action to try and stop this is trivial, and futile. Of course, making a global transition to sustainability largely focuses on envisioning, negotiating, and building a sustainable future, rather than blocking roads, sitting trees, or monkey-wrenching in order to stop stupid, and corrupt acts of ecological destruction. By ignoring the creative and positive part of the global environmental movement, Boyle crates a cynical, bleak, and possibly self-fulfilling environmental prophecy. It is a shame that a writer of his talents could not create a more fully realized work of ecological fiction.

  • Descent of Man
"[T]he failures are the honest failures of an energetic writer who is willing to try anything. . . . An adventurous new bird, T. Coraghessan Boyle, has come to roost in the literary jungle."
  • Budding Prospects: A Pastoral
"[Boyle] may be less than sure-footed as a novelist, but he is a humorist of the first water."
  • World's End
"'World's End' is a smashing good book, the peak achievement thus far in a career that seems now to have no clear limits."
  • If the River Was Whiskey
"In Mr. Boyle's weaker efforts which this volume, unfortunately, seems to feature his disparate talents are used, singly, for showy, but shallow effects . . ."
  • East Is East
"Much of the humor in 'East Is East' derives from Mr. Boyle's keen sociological eye and his ability to parody cultural preconceptions through manic exaggeration . . . Unfortunately, the novel's startling conclusion buys into just such stereotypes."

    Major Issues
The critique of consumeristic, superficial contemporary American society is a theme that reviewers and critics have identified throughout T. Coraghessan Boyle’s fiction. Boyle is usually labeled a comic writer, and critics point to his humorous, unexpected mixture of icons and conventions from both literary and pop cultures. He is a satirist, who draws our attention to the silliness of late 20th century life. His writing has also been called "comic horror," however. Scholars note the prominence of violence, paranoia, and alienation in Boyle’s fiction. Other critics have examined his technique of exaggerating everyday situations to absurd, nightmarish proportions. The grotesque and the bizarre, left deliberately unexplained, are commonly recognized features in Boyle’s stories.
