Name: William Bradford Category: Governors Burial Location: Burial Hill, Plymouth, Massachusetts, USA. Mike's Notes: I arrived in Plymouth right as the sun was setting; consequently, my pictures from the graveyard are a bit dark. This is one of the coolest graveyards in America, packed full with some of America's earliest settlers. If you happen to be Baptist, be sure not to miss the grave marker for Adoniram Judson , the first Baptist missionary sent from America to foreign soil. The site is not well-marked, but it's worth searching for (you can also see a picture of it on this site to help you locate it!).

William Bradford
BRADFORD, William printer and soldier of the revolution, born in New York in 1719; died in Philadelphia, 25 September, 1791, was a grandson of William Bradford, and became a partner of his uncle Andrew; but a love-affair of the younger Bradford led to a breach of this relation. In 1741 he went to England, and the next year he returned to Philadelphia with printing material and a library, and on 2 December, 1742, issued the first number of the "Pennsylvania Journal." In 1754 he established the London coffeehouse in Philadelphia; and in 1762, in association with Mr. Rydd, he opened a marine-insurance office. He was a spirited writer, and in his journal assailed the pretensions of the British government, and inveighed against the stamp act. When the revolutionary war began he joined the Pennsylvania militia. As a major, and afterward a colonel, he fought in the battles of Trenton and Princeton , being wounded in the latter action, and was at Fort Mifflin when it was bombarded by the British fleet on 16 November, 1777. After the withdrawal of the British troops from Philadelphia he returned from the army, broken down in health and ruined in purse. His son, Thomas, continued the publication of the "Pennsylvania Journal,"

William Bradford's Mayflower Passenger List
In all there were 102 passengers, three of them pregnant, on the Mayflower's 1620 voyage to North America. The Mayflower left Southampton, England on August 5, 1620 but was delayed when its sister ship, the Speedwell, sprung a leak. After unfruitful attemps to repair the Speedwell, a decision was made to leave it behind. Many of the Speedwell passengers and much of its cargo were loaded onto the Mayflower which left Plymouth, England on September 9, 1620. While at sea, Elizabeth Hopkins gave birth to the son, Oceanus. William Butten, a young boy, died three days before land was sighted. After a grueling journey, the passengers sighted land on November 9, 1620. Landfall was made on November 11, 1620, not in Virginia as planned, but on Cape Cod. Susanna White gave birth to a son, Peregrine ("one who journeys to foreign lands") as the Pilgrims were looking for a place to settle. Mary Allerton gave birth to a stillborn son on board the Mayflower while the first houses were being built at Plymouth. Alden, John

Of Plymouth Plantation Activities
William Bradford wrote Of Plymouth Plantation from 1630-1650, recounting the early days of the Plymouth Colony. The narrative was not published until 1865. We read it today to gain insight about the early days of our nation, and to learn about Puritan Plain Style, Bradford's style of writing.

Reading Activities Help Wanted: Leader
Have students write a classified ad seeking a governor for the Pilgrims, a person who can lead people in the most adverse situations. After students read Of Plymouth Plantation , ask them how they would change the job description.
Would your students want such a job? Do they think Bradford knew what he was getting into? Why would he have risked leading over 100 people to the unknown shores of North America?

William Bradford (1590-1657)
  • Introduction
    b. March 1590, Austerfield, Yorkshire, Eng.
    d. May 9, 1657, Plymouth, Mass. [U.S.]
governor of the Plymouth colony for 30 years, who helped shape and stabilize the political
institutions of the first permanent colony in New England. Bradford also left an invaluable
journal chronicling the Pilgrim venture, of which he was a part.
As a boy in England, he was caught up in the fervour of the Protestant Reformation and
became a dedicated member of the Separatist Church, the "left wing" of Puritanism, when
only 12. Seven years later he joined a group of nonconformists who migrated to Holland
(1609) in search of religious freedom. Dissatisfied with the lack of economic opportunity there, he helped organize an expedition of about 100 "Pilgrims" to the New World in 1620. Aboard ship, Bradford was one of the framers of the historic Mayflower Compact, an agreement for voluntary civil cooperation that became the foundation of the Plymouth government. The following year he was unanimously chosen as governor of the New World settlement and was re-elected 30 times, serving all but five years until 1656.

The experience that was had in this common course and condition, tried sundry years and that amongst godly and sober men, may well evince the vanity of that conceit of Plato's and other ancients applauded by some of later times; that the taking away of property and bringing in community into a commonwealth would make them happy and flourishing; as if they were wiser than God.
