Behind the lines
Melvyn Bragg explains the novelist's call to arms
Saturday April 21, 2001
The Guardian

Give me the boy until he is seven, the Jesuits said, and I will give you the man. I got the war until I was seven, and then came the man: my father, a stranger, the icon in uniform in the nightly kissed photograph. I had grown without him. When he died six years ago, I found myself pulled into a novel that revolved around that absent father, the mother who had changed through enforced independence and the son so painfully supplanted by the daddy for whom he had been educated to pray. The Soldier's Return is fiction fleshed, nerved and dreamt up from a few bones of autobiography. The underpinning is the second world war. It surprises me now that I did not face up to it sooner.

Shows how the raw material created by 500 million years of heaving geological action has been fashioned by man into the unique landscape we know today, and how the people of the area have developed their own distinctive traditions. Magnificent monuments such as the Castlerigg stone circle stand as witness to a people's extraordinary ingenuity, while thriving local sports and dialect are testimony to a living tradition which enhances the quiet beauty of the place.

Nature's power and beauty combine to create a special magic in the English Lake District. In this film Melvyn Bragg tells the story of its continuing impact on poets, travel writers and artists. From Wordsworth to Nicholson; Defoe to Gilpin and Turner to Heaton Cooper. Around 200 years ago the Lake District was a crucible for artistic thought and ideas prompting more and more visitors to savour the place for themselves. This opening up was given added impetus by the coming of the railways. Today the Lake District gets 18 million visitors a year.

  • "The Soldier's Return" by Melvyn Bragg An English soldier returns from World War II to his wife, son and cozy village, but finds the horror and the glory of his wartime memories hard to shake. By Suzy Hansen In the prologue to "The Soldier's Return," Melvyn Bragg offers a sly, artfully vague hint of the troubles to come. The author shifts the point of view among three characters: an English soldier fighting the Japanese in Burma during World War II; his wife, who is studying an atlas and wondering about her husband's exotic whereabouts; and their young son, who dreams about the father he barely remembers. All three are hoping for a reunion. Surely, when this soldier, Sam Richardson, returns, he and his wife, Ellen, and 6-year old Joe will rejoice in the bright future that awaits them in a new, liberated Europe. Bragg invokes his reader's conventional views of valiant World War II fighters risking their young lives to bring down tyranny. We imagine their proud loved ones anxiously waiting for them in remote villages. On that one page, however, Bragg also conveys Ellen's newfound independence, Joe's insecurity about his father's love, and Sam's anticipation of not only peace but also recognition in exchange for what he's suffered for his country. When Sam returns, he learns the truth: "No bunting. The German conflict had ended almost a year ago now. The war had gone cold." The Allied campaign in Burma was referred to as the "Forgotten War" for good reason: By 1945, the inhabitants of Wigton, Sam's hometown, are eager to forget the whole tragic affair.
