WRITERS ON THE VERGE
Our Spotlight on Eight Up-and-Coming Authors

he second annual "Writers on the Verge" is a spotlight on eight up-and-coming authors chosen by VLS editors. We believe they are some of the strongest, most original voices around; each is on the verge of making a mark on the literary landscape. All of these writers are at different stages in their literary careers. Brenda Shaughnessy Dionne Brand has turned her gift for lush language toward a powerful novel. Heidi Julavits and Tom Paine , alumni of Columbia's M.F.A. program, are preparing for the publication of their first books after seeing their stories appear in literary and glossy magazines. Ernesto Quiñonez , who met mentors Frederic Tuten and Walter Mosley while studying at City College, has already nabbed himself a film deal. This year's crew are all over the map geographically as well: Lesley Stern calls Sydney, Australia, her home base; Po Bronson draws inspiration from the dystopic Silicon Valley; and Ken Kalfus siphoned Russian angst into his stories while living there.

Knopf Canada 302 pp, $32.95. In town to promote her latest novel, at the full and change of the moon , the Toronto-based writer would much rather talk about poetry than politics. "I write poetry out of necessity," she says. "I can't write a sentence without thinking how this word sounds next to that word. I was never interested in writing fiction where it's always, so what happened next?" Originally from Trinidad, Brand has been living in Canada since 1970. Although she has published two novels and several volumes of poetry (her collection Land to Light On "There are a lot of writers who don't like the system," shrugs Brand whose activism includes her involvement in black empowerment; women's issues, and a 1983 stint in Grenada in support of the island's socialist project.

    Diversities of Women:
Gender, Race and Class in a Western Context
    York University 2002-2003
    Course Director: Sherry Rowley
    Monday 7:00-10:00 p.m. - Founders College 108
Course Description This course examines the intersections of race, gender, class, sexual orientation, age and ability/disability, and how membership in particular groupings shapes individual identity, as well as place, power and relationships in society. The course analyses these intersections as socially constructed phenomena in matrices of domination, and looks to explore particularities and uniqueness with the object of finding ways to understand the connections between one's own history, the challenges facing women in the west, and how people attempt to transform their lives and the worlds around them. Course Structure and Requirements
    Structure
    • Course participants meet on Mondays. Classes normally begin at 7:00 p.m. and end at 10:00 p.m. Anyone who misses more than three classes each term will lose 10% for each class missed. Students are expected to arrive on time and stay until class ends. Those who regularly come late or leave early will also find that it affects their grade.
    • Attendance alone will not ensure a passing participation grade. Successful class participation includes regular attendance, completion of course and tutorial materials as assigned, demonstrated critical understanding of the course materials, and consistent and meaningful involvement in class discussions and activities.
