The Life and Death of
An Iconoclast
100 years ago:
Censorship by bullet in Waco
By Jerry Flemmons
Special to the Star-Telegram
Editor's Note: This is an excerpt from O DAMMIT!: Being A Lexicon of Venom, Vitriol, and Wit from William Cowper Brann and The Iconoclast by Jerry Flemmons. To mark this legendary publishing figure's death 100 years ago this week in Waco, we present a look at Brann's life, his work and his death.
William Cowper Brann's life ended April 1, 1898, late afternoon on a busy downtown Waco, Texas, street, shot in the back, the bullet entering at the precise point at which his suspenders crossed. Brann returned fire and mortally wounded his assassin, businessman Tom Davis. Both men died within a few hours. Brann's funeral and burial in Oakwood Cemetery attracted Waco's largest crowd in history, although many came as spectators, not mourners, and, it was said, only to ensure that the hated Iconoclast and Apostle of the Devil indeed was dead and at long last in Hell. Assassination is the absolute censorship of a writer, but there were those in Waco who felt Brann's death was not severe enough punishment for what they considered his gravest sin: heretical slander and libel of the town's Baptists and their denominational training center, Baylor University, which he termed "that little museum of mental misfits."

Texas Travel Guide for Dogs
(October 30, 1998) The carpet in the back of my sport utility vehicle is still full of coarse, reddish hair, and I'm in no hurry to clean it out. That's where Rosie, our six-year-old Golden Retriever, used to ride. We took her to parks and beaches when we could, which in retrospect was not anywhere near often enough. Rosie was part of our family. She was our first "child" and later, Deputy Mom and Big Sister to our daughter Hallie. Like all good dogs, for her the term "unconditional love" was redundant. Last summer, as Hallie played in our front yard, someone driving a blue pickup truck ran over Rosie when she ran out in the street. The person who did itHallie says it was a man (only in the sense of his gender)kept driving. Rosie was left writhing on the pavement with a broken back. Using a blanket, Linda and I got her into my truck and rushed her to an emergency veterinary clinic. After looking at an X-ray, the vet said there was nothing we could do for her but put her down. So, with the wisdom that only sad hindsight brings, if you have a beloved family pet, do things with it as frequently as you can, while you can.

When we all get to California
Back in 1947 Bob Graves, Joe Swan and I often walked home togesther from work at the Lyric Theater. Brownwood had a bus that ran from behind the Southern Hotel (on Center Avenue) out Third Street nearly to Bob's house but we preferred to walk. The bus usually quit running long before we closed up the picture show. Often under a corner street light we would sit on the curb and talk about going to California. In that kinder and gentler time there were no drive-by shootings or drug pushers on our corners. We talked as young people have always talked about all we wanted to do in the future. We were all going to get rich in Hollywood writing much better movies than those we saw over and over as ushers. Bob and Joe eventually made it to California. Both had families by then but the riches did not come in as planned. When I finally made it to California it was only to catch a ship for Taiwan. None of us got rich in material things. It probably would have ruined our lives had we become wealthy. Bob became manager of the California Orchard Company in King City and wrote some good short stories, mostly cowboy yarns. Before his sudden death at 47, Bob even sold a detective story. He was not familiar with the market nor the magazine that purchased the story. Had he known he would never have submitted the story. When he got his free copy with his story he learned to his chagrin it was a "girlie" magazine (a tame publication compared to today's such magazines). Bob was too embarrassed to show anyone his success.

O dammit!
A Lexicon and a Lecture from William Cowper Brann, The Iconoclast
Jerry Flemmons
"Why am I an Iconoclast? . . . Sir, I am a seeker of Truth. . . . [W]hen you get an idea, put it on the anvil and bid the world hit it with the heaviest sledge. The more you hammer Truth the brighter it becomes." When an enraged reader gunned him down in Waco, April Fool's Day 1898, William Cowper Brann had published The Iconoclast , the nation's most controversial magazine, for some forty months. It was the only American journal to claim a quarter-of-a-million monthly circulation, owing largely to Brann's gusto for offering up his "truths." Though his circulation was international, his favorite idols for smashing were those he found at home in Waco, nicknamed "Six-Shooter Depot" and which exemplified, he believed, Texas's reputation for "furnish[ing] forth more hidebound dogmatists, narrow-minded bigots and intolerable fanatics in proportion to population than any other section of these United States!" Though a twelve-volume 1912 edition of The Iconoclast resides here and there in rare book collections, public access to the writings of Texas's perhaps most infamous and entertaining journalist has been surprisingly limited. Jerry Flemmons's lexicon synthesizes the most memorable and current Brannisms into a facilely retrievable format. From America to Texas Politics to the Universe, these selected snippets prove how brightly indeed wisdom, wit, and the well-turned phrase survive pounding of the ages.

Named The Iconoclast, Brann's newspaper reflected his editorial opinion, something he possessed on practically every subject; and he loved to express his opinions.

Vocabulary Analysis of Project Guttenberg

Introduction
While reading Moby Dick in April 2000, I was astounded by Melville's enormous vocabulary. I wondered what was Moby Dick's total vocabulary and how it compared to other works. Thanks to the Project Guttenberg , an online resource for literature, (and copious spare-time) I was able to download a considerable sample of works and perform a word analysis. The following are the results from this informal study including relative vocabulary densities and anomalous word usage. Please sign my guestbook if you find this interesting or helpful. Thanks, Zack
Sample Database
The works represented in this study come exclusively from the Project Guttenberg (PG). While most PG works are included, the sample is not complete; some works have been eliminated for obvious reasons (e.g. Pi to 10,000 digits) while others works were eliminated because they were malformed or unavailable. Some books in the Project Guttenberg are split into several seperate volumes or alternatively several works are combined into one; this may effect the sample slightly, especially the Anomalous Word Charts . In some cases, I have manually combined multiple volumes into one for logical consistency.
