Sebastian Brant
A German humanist and poet, born at Stasburg in 1457 or 1458; died at the same place, 1521. He attended the University of Basle where he at first studied philosophy, but soon after abandoned this for law, obtaining in 1489 the degree of Doctor of Canon and Civil Law. Prior to this, from 1484, Brant had begun to lecture at the university, practising his profession at the same time. He wrote a number of poems in Latin and German in which he set forth his religious and political ideals. The election of Maximilian as emperor had filled him and many other patriots with high hope. To see the emperor the supreme temporal ruler of Christian nations Besides the "Narrenschiff" Brant wrote religious and political poems in Latin and Gerrnan. He also edited and translated a number of legal and theological treatises. The most complete edition of the "Narrenschiff" is that of Father Zarncke (Leipzig, 1854 ) which contains also selections from Brant's other works. Other editions are by Karl Goedeke (Leipzig, 1872) and F. Bobertag (in Kurschner's Deutsche National Litteratur, XVI). A modern German translation was made by Karl Simroek (Berlin, 1972). A clear edition of the English translation of Barclay, by T. M. Jamieson, appeared at Edinburgh in 1874 in 2 vols. ARTHUR F.J. REMY

OF COARSE FOOLS
Vile, scolding words do irritate,
Good manners thereby will abate
If sow-bell's rung from morn to late.
A new St. Ruffian now holds sway,
Men celebrate him much today
And honor him in every place
With words and ways that spell disgrace, And make a jest of ribaldry, Though belted not with decency. Sir Decency is doubtless dead, Fool holds the sow's ear, wags her head, And makes the sow-bell loudly ring So that the sow her ditty sing. The sow leads on and cannot fail, She holds the fools' ship by her tail, That laden down no wreck it be, For that would bring great misery. The wine no fool today would heed That's quite inferior wine, indeed. Full many a litter breeds the sow, And wisdom lives in exile now; The swine on decent people frown, The sow alone now wears the crown. Whoever rings her bell, that man Is now the one who leads the van, While he who does such foolish work As that famed priest of Kalenberg, Or as Monk Islan long of beard, He thinks that he's himself endeared.

BRANT, SEBASTIAN
Jacobus Locher (1497) was hardly less popular than the German original. There is also a large quantity of other " fool literature." Nigel, called Wireker (fl. 1190), a monk of Christ Church Priory, Canterbury, wrote a satirical Speculum stultorum, in which the ambitious and discontented monk figured as the ass Brunellus, who wanted a longer tail. Brunellus, who has been educated at Paris, decides to found an order of fools, which shall combine the good points of all the existing monastic orders. Cock Lovell's Bate (printed by Wynkyn de Worde, c. 1510) is another imitation of the Narrenschiff. Cock Lovell is a fraudulent currier who gathers round him a rascally collection of tradesmen. They sail off in a riotous fashion up hill and down dale throughout England. Brant's other works, of which the chief was a version of Freidank's Bescheidenheit (1508), are of inferior interest and importance. Brant's Narrenschiff has been edited by F. Zarncke (1854); by K. Goedeke (1872); and by F. Bobertag (Kiirschner's Deutsche Nationattiteratur, vol. xvi., 1889). A modern G_erman translation was published by K. Simrock in 1872. On the influence of Brant in England see especially C. H. Herford, The Literary Relations of England and Germany in the idth Century (1886).

Sebastian Brant
Brant Sebastian (1458-1521) German satirical poet and humanist. His Ship of Fools (1494), a bitter satire on follies and vices of his time, tells how a ship loaded with fools sails to fool's paradise, Narragonia.
See: Bosch The Ship of Fools is evidently based on the poem. The picture shows two nuns and a monk passing merry time while sailing to Heaven in a company of peasants in a strange boat, which has a May tree (which symbolizes spring folk festivals, a time of moral license for folk and clergy alike) as a mast; banner with a Muslim crescent instead of Christian cross and many other humorous details.
