Born in 1887, Rupert Brooke experienced a comfortable childhood in a rarified atmosphere, living around - and then attending - the school at Rugby, a famed British institution where his father worked as a housemaster. The boy soon grew into a man whose handsome figure transfixed admirers of either sex: almost six foot tall, he was academically clever, good at sports - representing the school in cricket and, of course, rugby - and disarming in character. He was also highly creative: Rupert wrote verse throughout his childhood, having allegedly gained a love of poetry from reading Browning.

    1914 III. THE DEAD
by Rupert Brooke. Blow out, you bugles, over the rich Dead! There's none of these so lonely and poor of old, But, dying, has made us rarer gifts than gold. These laid the world away; poured out the red Sweet wine of youth; gave up the years to be Of work and joy, and that unhoped serene, That men call age; and those who would have been, Their sons, they gave, their immortality.
Blow, bugles, blow! They brought us, for our dearth, Holiness, lacked so long, and Love, and Pain, Honour has come back, as a king, to earth, And paid his subjects with a royal wage; And Nobleness walks in our ways again; And we have come into our heritage.

    http://www.firstworldwar.com/poetsandprose/brooke.htm
Updated - Sunday, 2 September, 2001 Rupert Brooke (1887-1915) was born into a well-to-do, academic family; his father was a housemaster at Rugby School, where Rupert was educated before going on to King's College, Cambridge. He was a good student and athlete, and - in part because of his strikingly handsome looks - a popular young man who eventually numbered among his friends E. M. Forster, Maynard Keynes, Virginia Woolf, and Edward Thomas. Even as a student he was familiar in literary circles and came to know many important political, literary and social figures before the war. Brooke actually saw little combat during the war; he contracted blood-poisoning from a small neglected injury and died in April 1915, in the Aegean. Brooke's reputation, aside from the myth of the fallen "golden warrior" that his friends set about creating almost immediately after his death, rests on the five war sonnets of 1914. Some of his earlier poetry - "Fish," Helen and Menelaus," and "Heaven" - however, shows us a much different side of Brooke's talent and temperament. Some critics doubt that he would have written the sonnets later in the war had he lived. They show an enthusiasm that most soldiers and poets eventually lost; another poet

    http://www.lib.byu.edu/~english/WWI/poets/rbobituary.html
Rupert Brooke's Obituary in The Times Rupert Brooke died on April 23 (coincidentally, the traditional observance of St. George's Day, and the birthday of Shakespeare), 1915. On Monday, April 26, 1915, his obituary appeared in The Times : "Death of Mr. Rupert Brooke. Sustroke at Lemnos. We regret to record the death, on April 23, Lemnos, from the effects of sunstroke, of Rupert Brooke, the poet, a sub-lieutenant in the Royal Naval Division." The obituary continues: "W.S.C." writes: "Rupert Brooke is dead . . . [his] life has closed at the moment when it seemed to have reached its springtime." W.S.C. was, of course, Winston Spencer Churchill. Churchill's portion of the obituary (a eulogy) takes up a little less than half of the total, and is sandwiched between the copy writer's general announcement and later biographical sketch of Brooke (the "copy writer" was probably Edward Marsh, the editor of Georgian Poetry , a close friend of Brooke's, and soon to become his literary exucutor). Although, on the surface, the Churchill obituary is a tribute to a promising young poet, it's impossible not to sense in the eulogy an underlying political agenda especially when considered in the historical context of the Dardenelles campaign which Churchill had helped to conceive and to which he had sent Brooke as part of his own Royal Naval Division (RND). The obituary of Rupert Brooke written by Winston Churchill follows:
Rupert Brooke is dead. A telegram from the Admiral at Lemnos tells us that this life has closed at the moment when it seemed to have reached its springtime. A voice had become audible, a note had been struck, more true, more thrilling, more able to do justice to the nobility of our youth in arms engaged in this present war, than any other more able to express their thoughts of self-surrender, and with a power to carry comfort to those who watch them so intently from afar. The voice has been swiftly stilled. Only the echoes and the memory remain; but they will linger.
