WILLIAM BROOME
The Rosebud
QUEEN of fragrance, lovely Rose,
The beauties of thy leaves disclose!
In this sweet offspring of a day.
That miracle of face must fail,
Thy charms are sweet, but charms are frail:
Swift as the short-lived flower they fly,
At morn they bloom, at evening die:
Though Sickness yet a while forbears,
Yet Time destroys what Sickness spares:
Now Helen lives alone in fame,
Time must indent that heavenly brow, And thou must be what they are now. Table of Contents Previous Chapter Next Chapter

He married (2) M ARGARET H EAD 1830, daughter of H ENRY H EAD and M ARY M ORGAN . She was born July 27, 1813 in South Carolina. Notes for J OHN B ROOM John was born in South Carolina July10th 1810. He was married there about 1830 to Margaret Head who was also born in South Carolina July 27th 1813. It is believed she was the daughter of Henry Head born 1784, and died August 3rd 1848. He is buried beside Margaret in Dogwood Cemetery in grave number 101. John and Margaret were the parents of eight children. Three of them were born in South Carolina before John moved his family to Georgia. The exact date of their arrival is unknown, but it was between 1835 to 1838. He is first recorded in the 1840 census of Walker County Georgia as the head of the household but with another man between age 20 to30 living with this family. This man is believed to be the younger brother of John, James Monroe Broom. John and Maragret were charter member of Dogwood Baptist Church, Dogwood Valley, Georgia (Walker county now Catoosa County). They are both buried in the cemetery next to the Church, also a son and daughter are buried there, and possibly another daughter of John's by his second wife . It is not known who placed the markers at these graves or who carved the names and dates on them. They are of river or field rock and are most expertly carved. The rock at John's grave was too narrow to accommodate his entire name on the front, so the " M" was carved on the side.

One of Us Will Cry by F. William Broome Last updated January 28, 2001 A day will come perhaps too soon
when one of us will surely cry
Life tells us that one will be first
the other as the single survivor
Must face the loneliness ahead. One of us will cry as tears are shed
in final hours of the other
Tears confirming a future separation
breaking a marriage and joyful family
Shared progeny not able to alter it. One of us will cry and that one will not
for long have won the day
Too soon time will lose its elasticity closing tightly until both are gone Which goes first matters not at all. At four-score years our lives include days of pain in the heart hurt in body And an aching in the soul bringing at the end our final question Does our love live on in the love of others? A note from the author: Age 80, I reside in Dahlonega, Georgia, USA Have written poetry for only a few years, finding it a satisfying manner of expression, and a way to combat frustration.

TO A LADY OF THIRTY by: William Broome (1689-1745)
O more let youth its beauty boast,
S-n at thirty reigns a toast,
And, like the Sun as he declines,
More mildly, but more sweetly shines.
The hand of Time alone disarms
Her face of its superfluous charms:
But adds, for every grace resign'd,
A thousand to adorn her mind.
    Youth was her too inflaming time;
    This, her more habitable clime:
How must she then each heart engage,
Who blooms like youth, is wise in age!
    Thus the rich orange-trees produce
At once both ornament, and use:
    Here opening blossoms we behold,
There fragrant orbs of ripen'd gold.
