Attended Hanover College and the University of Cincinnati. (Hanover is where some of the research for these pages is being done.) Author of the delightful Martians Go Home , in 1955, and the very impressive The Lights in the Skies Are Stars , 1953. Fred also authored several outstanding short stories and his best, "Arena," was used as a Star Trek episode. Brown, like Bester, didn't write an over-welming amount of SF but what each wrote in the 50s set them apart from and above other writers. Brown spent a lot of his time writing novels in the mystery field. "Fred hated to write. But he loved having written. He would do everything he could think of to delay sitting at his typewriter: he would dust his chair, tootle on his flute, read a little, tootle some more. After a time his conscience would begin to hurt, and he would actually sit at his typewriter. He might write a line or two, or he might write a few pages. But the books got written," Elizabeth Brown. Stewart Masters, 3874 Tiffany Ln., Hermitage, PA 16159, $29.99 (0-9718185-0-9). Why is one out-of-print crime writer rediscovered and another, equally deserving, left to languish? Why Jim Thompson but not Fredric Brown? The answers to questions like that breed just the kind of bitter irony on which both of these masters of pulp fiction thrived. Thankfully, ambitious small-publisher Stewart Masters has begun a project that could take Brown’s name off the unfairly forgotten short list. This volume—part 1 in the projected seven-volume Fredric Brown Mystery Library, which will bring all of Brown’s mystery fiction back into print—collects four of the author’s Ed and Am Hunter novels (the remaining three will make up volume 2). There are some major differences between Brown and Thompson. Brown is far less a classic noir writer than Thompson; his stories are not nearly as dark and perverse, and his style is far more polished. Brown was a craftsman plying his hard-boiled trade, whereas Thompson was an open wound bleeding on the page. The Ed and Am Hunter novels star a nephew (Ed) and uncle (Am) who begin as amateur sleuths but eventually become professional detectives. Of the four novels collected here—

Page 1 of 2 Fredric Brown Fredric William Brown was born in Cincinnati, Ohio. After finishing high school in 1922, he attended Hanover College and the University of Cincinnati. In 1929, he married Helen Ruth Brown. They moved to Milwaukee where their two sons were born. Brown attempted several jobs before joining the Milwaukee Allied Authors Club and started writing for trade magazines. From 1937 until 1945, he was a proofreader for the Milwaukee Journal . In 1937, he sold his first detective story 'Monday's Off Night'. His breakthrough came a year later with the publication of 'The Moon for a Nickel' in Detection Story . In the Forties, he sold hundreds of stories to the detective and science fiction pulp magazines.
In 1947, his first novel was published which brought him fame and money. He quit his job to become a full-time writer. He divorced Helen and soon remarried. In 1949, the Browns moved to Mexico where they stayed for three years. In 1952, they moved to the Los Angeles area, but in 1954, on the advice of Brown's doctors, they moved back to Tucson. Brown was suffering from asthma. In 1961, they went to California where Fredric wrote screenplays and scripts. In the late Sixties, his health was declining fast and he drank heavily. His first wife died in 1970 and Brown passed away two years later in hospital. Titles and year of publication:
1) The Fabulous Clipjoint (Edgar Award) 2) The Dead Ringer 3) Murder Can Be Fun (Also published as: A Plot for Murder) 4) The Bloody Moonlight (UK Title: Murder in Moonlight)
