Sterling Brown's poem "Strong Men," from his book entitled Southern Road (1931), best celebrates the
i ndomitable spirit of Black people in the face of racism and poverty and political exploitation. The poem captures the
horrors of the Middle Passage and reflects the "idea of Black stoicism," Brown explains in Southern Road . Brown was a distinguished poet, critic, scholar, and teacher of Black life
and culture. His work reveals the continuity of Black expression as well as the triumphs and failures, hopes and fears, foibles and strengths of America's Everyman.
Born on May 1, 1901, in a house on Sixth and Fairmount in Washington, DC, Brown was the last of six children born to Reverend Sterling Nelson and Adelaid Allen Brown. He
grew up on the campus of Howard University, where his father taught in the School of Religion.
After establishing contacts with Howardites and meeting Jean Toomer (a notable writer, critic, and poet), Brown
left home for Williams College to become a writer. In 1923, a year after Brown secured a B.A. along with a Phi Beta Kappa key, he obtained his M.A. from Harvard
University. Brown followed in his father's footsteps by returning to Howard to teach. During Brown's fifty-year stay at

A. Brown
Sterling Allen Brown was born on this date in 1901. He was an influential African-American teacher and literary critic whose poetry was rooted in folklore sources and black dialect.
From Washington, D.C., the son of a professor at Howard University, Brown was educated at Williams College, Williamstown, Mass. (A.B., 1922), and Harvard University (A.M. 1923). While teaching, he began collecting folk songs and stories from blacks. The people he met also served as the subject of the poetry he then began to write.
In 1929 Brown began a 40-year teaching career at Howard, and in 1932 his first volume of poetry, Southern Road , was published. Musical forms, especially ballads, work songs, spirituals, and blues, were primary influences on his work. At a time when white writers had distorted black dialect into a stereotype, he boldly used authentic dialect and phonetic spelling in his poems.
Though Southern Road was widely praised, Brown found no publisher for his second collection

Celebrating Sterling Brown Poet Roland Flint welcomes poet Michael S. Harper (editor of The Collected Poems of Sterling Brown ) for reminiscences about the late (1901-1989) great, and greatly loved Howard University professor. A poet of wide learning, rich humor and deeply moral vision, he was also a profoundly knowledgeable fan of jazz and the blues. In 40 years of teaching, Brown's notable students included writers Amiri Baraka, Lucille Clifton, and Toni Morrison. Critic Harper reads and comments on five Brown poems: " Odyssey of Big Boy ," " Long Gone ," " Slim in Hell ," " Puttin' on Dog ," and " Conjured ." The final poem, " After Winter ," heard in Brown's own voice (courtesy Smithsonian/Folkways), recalls his father at the Howard County farm on Whiskey Bottom Road where the poet spent summers as a boy. (Originally recorded in 1994). Back

Slim in Hell
An excerpt from "Slim in Hell" by Sterling A. Brown:

St Peter said, "Well,
You got back quick.
How's the devil?
And what's his latest trick?
And Slim say, Peter,
I really can't tell.
The place was Dixie
that I took for hell. Then Peter say, "You must be crazy, I vow Where in hell did you think hell was anyhow?" His spoken word imitated the many voices of Southern Black experience. Born May 1, 1901 in Washington, D.C., Sterling Brown pursued his interests in blues and jazz, while his father taught religious studies at Howard University. /Stay tuned, more to come. Mark D. http://occ.awlonline.com/bookbind/pubbooks/divine5e/chapter27/medialib/primaryso
Sterling A. Brown, "Out of Their Mouths" (1942)
Deep Southa Soliloquy "Why do you reckon white folks act like they do? I sit home studying them. A cracker is like this. He will cut his own throat just to see a Negro die along with him. Further and more, they're fussing and squabbling among theirselves so much that a man can creep up behind them unbeknownst to 'em and hit 'em on the head. "Take Talmadge, that narrow-minded rascal. All this trouble, war, soldiers being killed by the thousands, hostages being killed, bombs falling on women and little childrenand all he can do is woof about 'coeducation of the races' or 'segregation.' Somebody ought to dump him on his head in some sea or other. "This war now. It looks like they don't want you in the navy, army, or marines. Just like before the war they didn't want you anywhere you could make a dime out of it. When those Japs first started out in the Pacific, I thought Negroes ought to thank their lucky stars that they weren't on those ships going down with the white folks. Then I got to studying and knew I was wrong. Onliest way we can get anything out of this war is to put all we can in it. That's my best judgment. "The diffunce between the northern and the southern Negro is that the northern is a freeborn-minded Negro, but the southern is trained to say Yes-sir and No-sir all the time. That don't mean the southern Negro won't fight, but he's just more kinderhearted. The gurvenmrent is exchanging them, sending one to the north and one to the south.
