Hear Avison! He tenders evidence
That music in his day as much absorbed
Heart and soul then as Wagner's music now. Buried in St. Andrews' churchyard.

Add to a Notebook Robert Browning Robert Browning was born on May 7, 1812, in Camberwell, England. His mother was an accomplished pianist and a devout evangelical Christian. His father, who worked as a bank clerk, was also an artist, scholar, antiquarian, and collector of books and pictures. His rare book collection of more than 6,000 volumes included works in Greek, Hebrew, Latin, French, Italian, and Spanish. Much of Browning's education came from his well-read father. It is believed that he was already proficient at reading and writing by the age of five. A bright and anxious student, Browning learned Latin, Greek, and French by the time he was fourteen. From fourteen to sixteen he was educated at home, attended to by various tutors in music, drawing, dancing, and horsemanship. At the age of twelve he wrote a volume of Byronic verse entitled Incondita , which his parents attempted, unsuccessfully, to have published. In 1825, a cousin gave Browning a collection of Shelley 's poetry; Browning was so taken with the book that he asked for the rest of Shelley's works for his thirteenth birthday, and declared himself a vegetarian and an atheist in emulation of the poet. Despite this early passion, he apparently wrote no poems between the ages of thirteen and twenty. In 1828, Browning enrolled at the University of London, but he soon left, anxious to read and learn at his own pace. The random nature of his education later surfaced in his writing, leading to criticism of his poems' obscurities.

57. Robert Browning
Brief biography and commentary on his writing.

Robert Browning 1812-1889 England Robert Browning was the older of the two children of Robert and Sarah Anna Wiedeman Browning. From his reasonably affluent parents Browning learned to love the artsbooks, paintings, music, and theatre. His father, a clerk in the Bank of England, was an unusually well-read man who owned a personal library of 6000 books. His mother was a devoutly religious woman and an accomplished pianist. Robert Browning attended a private grammar school and then enjoyed the luxury of tutors in his home. By the age of fourteen he had learned Latin, Greek, French, and Italian. After fourteen, he received no formal education but was a prolific reader in his father's library. This included reading all fifty volumes of a set of reference books! Robert Browning Browning often chose to read books that were not well known to others. This resulted in his having a vast knowledge of literature rarely familiar to other people. Thus his poems frequently included allusions his readers did not recognize. His early poems included so many of these obscure references that they earned him a reputation for being difficult to read and almost impossible to understand. Ultimately Browning realized that much of what he knew was not known by his readers, and he was able to moderate the difficulty of his poetry. Browning enjoyed foreign traveled, which included trips to St. Petersburg, Russia, and Italy. During his second visit to Italy in 1844, he read a poem by Elizabeth Barrett, the best-known female poet in England, and one whose works he greatly admired. This particular poem commended his poetry!

On the afternoon of September 12, 1846, fragile poetess Elizabeth Barrett defied her tyrannical and fanatically religious father, Edward, the widowed scion of rich Jamaican slaveholders. With faithful maid, Elizabeth Wilson, her only companion, she slipped out of the family home on London's Wimpole Street and married Robert Browning in secret at St. Marylebone Parish Church. She was forty; Robert was six years younger. She was already acclaimed for her verses; he was yet to achieve widespread fame. The couple was passionately in love. They had met in May 1845, though Robert was already an admirer of Elizabeth's poetry and had been writing love letters to her for several months before their first meeting.

Biography
Robert Browning
Poet England Born 7 May 1812
Died 12 Dec 1889
Robert Browning was born in Camberwell, in south-east London. The major influences on his early development came from his father's large and eccentric library, his mother's deep Nonconformist piety, and his adolescent encounter with Romantic poetry (especially Shelley).
After education at local schools and at home, he enrolled at the newly founded University of London in 1828, but left the following year. He travelled widely on the Continent in the 1830s and 1840s. He published 'Pauline' anonymously and without success in 1833; 'Paracelsus' (1835) made him known to London literary society. However, 'Sordello' (1840), derided for its obscurity, blighted his career for over 20 years. He published a series of plays and collections of shorter poems, 'Bells and Pomegranates' (1841).
In January 1845 he began corresponding with Elizabeth Barrett; he met her in May 1845, and they were married in September 1846 after a clandestine courtship (because of Mr Barrett's implacable opposition to the idea of any of his children marrying). The Brownings lived in Italy until Elizabeth Barrett Browning's death in 1861. Browning published 'Men and Women' (1855), which contains some of his finest poems, but still did not restore his reputation (or his sales).
After his wife's death, Browning returned to England with their only son, and settled in London. He published 'Dramatis Personae' (1864), a collection which began to repair his critical fortunes; this process was accomplished by the appearance of 'The Ring and the Book' (1868-9). Among the works of his later years, 'Fifine at the Fair' (1872), 'Aristophanes' Apology' (1875), 'La Saisiaz' (1878), 'Dramatic Idylls' (1879), 'Parleyings with Certain People of Importance in Their Day' (1887) and 'Asolando' (1889) are outstanding. Browning died in Venice, and was buried in Poets' Corner in Westminster Abbey.
