Name: William Jennings Bryan Categories: Presidential Losers (lost to President William McKinley in 1896 and 1900 and to President William Howard Taft in 1908) US Congressman from Nebraska Secretary of State under President Woodrow Wilson Burial Location: Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Virginia, USA. Mike's Notes: William Jennings Bryan's grave is not the easiest to find in Arlington Cemetery. As you stand facing the main entrance to the cemetery, his grave is far to the left near the front of the cemetery. It's on a hill and can easily be overlooked. Even with the cemetery map, I found it difficult to search out. Bryan, though not a household name, contributed in significant ways to the country through his service.

William Jennings Bryan
An unsuccessful candidate for President of the United States, at 36 he was the youngest person ever nominated for that office by a major political party. He was nominated a total of three times but never attained the office. His statue repesents Iowa in Statuary Hall in the United States Capitol Building. He was born March 19, 1860, and died on June 26, 1925, shortly after participating in the famous "Scopes Monkey Trial" in Tennessee, during which he opposed Clarence Darrow. He is buried in Section 4 of Arlington National Cemetery, near Bryan Drive which was named in his honor. He also served as Secretary of State and, briefly, as a volunteer army officer in the Spanish-American War. Mary Elizabeth Baird Bryan

Occasion: A speech given during the 1896 Democratic National Convention. It was Bryan's part of a convention-wide debate over monetary policy. A moderately well-known delegate before he gave the speech, Bryan went on to win the Democratic presidential nomination that year.
Editorial note: Bracketed material is from the source copy. Cross of Gold
"The humblest citizen in all the land, when clad in the armor of a righteous cause, is stronger than all the hosts of error."
Mr. Chairman and Gentlemen of the Convention:
When this debate is concluded, a motion will be made to lay upon the table the resolution offered in commendation of the Administration, and also the resolution offered in condemnation of the Administration. We object to bringing this question down to the level of persons. The individual is but an atom; he is born, he acts, he dies; but principles are eternal; and this has been a contest over a principle. View

We do not come as individuals. As individuals we might have been glad to compliment the gentleman from New York [Senator Hill], but we know that the people for whom we speak would never be willing to put him in a position where he could thwart the will of the Democratic party. I say it was not a question of persons; it was a question of principle, and it is not with gladness, my friends, that we find ourselves brought into conflict with those who are now arrayed on the other side.

Temperance Tribute to William Jennings Bryan, circa 1925
The temperance movement was a driving force behind the women's suffrage movement in the South and West. Temperance workers believed that greedy and selfish alcohol manufacturers were knowingly selling a dangerous product to the public and causing great social harm in the process. For many women, it was their belief in temperance and prohibition that inspired them to work to get the vote. Bryan's weekly column of Sunday School lessons was syndicated in more than 100 newspapers with an estimated readership of 15 million. He traveled the country constantly on the Chautauqua circuit, making more than 200 speeches a year for decades. This tribute to Bryan after his death in 1925 reveals how much he meant to the temperance movement. Back to exhibit

IN THE GENNETT STUDIO Bryan was quick to realize the potential of the phonograph as a campaign aid, and he recorded prolifically during his unsuccessful runs for the presidency. In July 1923, retired from politics, Bryan recorded a few "inspirational" pieces with string-quartet accompaniment at Gennett's Richmond, Indiana studio. The records went largely unnoticed until the Scopes trial returned Bryan to the national spotlight one last time.

http://www.cooperativeindividualism.org/bryan_wm_cross_of_gold.html
The Cross Of Gold William Jennings Bryan William Jennings Bryan, of Nebraska, was made nationally famous by his "Cross of Gold" speech favoring the free coinage of silver at the ratio of 16 to 1, which he delivered before the Democratic National Convention in Chicago on 8 July 1896. Bryan was the unsuccessful Democratic candidate for President in 1896, 1900, and 1908. For about two years (1913-1915) he was Secretary of State in President Wilson's cabinet.
Mr. Chairman and Gentlemen of the Convention: I would be presumptuous, indeed, to present myself against the distinguished gentlemen to whom you have listened if this were mere measuring of abilities; but this is not a contest between persons. The humblest citizen in all the land, when clad in the armor of a righteous cause,is stronger than all the hosts of error. I come to speak to you in defense of a cause as holy as the cause of liberty the cause of humanity. When this debate is concluded, a motion will made to lay upon the table the resolution offered in commendation of the Administration, and also the resolution offered in condemnation of the Administration. We object to bringing this question down to the level of persons. The individual is but an atom; he is born, he acts, he dies; but principles are eternal, and this has been a contest over a principle.
