Imprint staff Former University of Waterloo graduate Michael Bryson has released his first book of short stories entitled, 13 Shades of Black and White. Each story is unique in itself and has a truly Canadian spirit. The stories consist of several characters who all are travelling through their separate lives. With 23 stories in total, Bryson creates a book that is a must read. Although sometimes a little blunt in the text, Bryson gets his point across, trying to show the many different lives that surround the reader. The first story, “At least one good thing,” looks at a man who is in jail. He is reflecting on two women who were in his life in the past, and one of them is still with him even though he is in jail. The narrator of this story discusses the pros of the sexual relationship with Gloria and also the loyalty of Justine. This story covers a lot and even talks about how the narrator cannot talk about happiness because of his father. There are many themes that run throughout the short stories. These themes include sexual relationships, love, sports, mid-life crisis’, curiosity, religion and many others.

Letter to TDR Subject Michael Bryson's article on the Canadian Writers' Coalition Date : January 26, 2002 Michael Bryson, in his rambling report on the coalition of Canadian writers, succeeds at a number of things, though unfortunately none of them are particularly interesting or worthwhile. He spends a few lines explaining the basics of the situation. Then we hear some thoughtless comments he heard about how Canadian books must be crap if they aren't selling, suggesting we can ignore the business of the industry completely in favour of blaming the content of Canadian books. He goes on to refute this, but not particularly well, which makes me ask why he included it. Next, we are told that the coalition concept could use a better marketing campaign. At last we get a clear idea, although hardly an incredible one, weakly supported with the idea that among many other things, the Canada Council will allow funding for "more effective promotion of Canadian books." But I think this almost certainly doesn't refer to the recent and privately arranged marketing his article is about. We are given a typical counterproductive ramble about how many inroads Canadian culture makes into the states. I'm sick of this, and I know if I met an Irish poet who kept going on about how much he was read in England, I'd wonder why he cared so much and why he didn't just get on with things.

Insomniac Press, 2001 Reviewed by Michael Bryson Because I work with computers, I spend a lot of time sitting and making small, repeated motions with my wrists. This causes tightness in my shoulders and on a fairly regular basis I get a dull pain in my lower back. I should stretch more, I know. I try to stretch everyday, but I don't follow a routine - and I only make a half-hearted effort at it. If I stretched more often - and did a better job of stretching - I would probably feel better. Why don't I? It's not that bad, I tell myself. Besides, it's an inconvenience. After reading , Michael Twist's personal account of life with diabetes, I tried to think of how I would react if I was suddenly told I had a chronic condition that required me to shoot myself with a needle twice a day plus strictly monitor my diet and blood sugar. The only chronic condition I could identify in my life was my minor back pain. Stretching is inconvenient? If I can't be pro-active in looking after my back, I assume I would struggle mightily with the 24-hour concern that an out-of-balance blood sugar could kill me. Twist belongs to an elite club with membership dues I only begin to understand.

Jim Bryson
The Occasionals
Square Dog Records SD 2002
by William Michael Smith
What are we going to do with a brilliant songwriter who sings, "I'm not necessarily very smart"? That would be Jim Bryson and he may be the king of self-deprecation or self-effacement, but he is certainly smart. His new record, The Occasionals , proves it. The Occasionals struck a chord with me from the opening notes of the quiet "Without Piano." Bryson delivers this minimalist alt-country gem in a bittersweet voice that says "I'm a nice guy, but I'll end up hurtin' you, girl." I delayed a few days
My bottled blues keep you away
And I will break your sweet heart
'Cause we're through in these parts
Bryson turns the band loose on the Son Volt-ish, twangy roots rocker, "Travelled By Land," and it's a joyous thing to hear. Lefeuvre's soaring, fluid guitar work stands out, all twang and growl, and the interplay with Thompson's cascading steel guitar adds to the wistful sentiments.

A week later came the pathologist's report - CANCER - highly aggressive and extremely rare.
The hospital's recommendation: 18 months of chemotherapy treatments, with 6-8 weeks of radiology, and no guarantee that Michael would survive either the treatment or the cancer. What was guaranteed however, that as a result of the treatment, Michael could look forward to malformation of the spine, permanent hair loss, loss of stature, sterility, reduced intelligence, and a very high probability of developing another cancer within 10 years of treatment, assuming that he lived through the treatment. The oncology staff insisted that without their recommended treatment the incidence of recurrence of this type of cancer was 100%. The Farnum's were faced with a terrible dilemma. How could they put their beautiful son through the horrors that had been described to them - and what in heaven and earth was the alternative. Not understanding that there was an alternative, as none was offered, Bryan and his wife reluctantly agreed to start Michael on the recommended treatments. One course of chemotherapy was begun.

Almine Barton (www.spiritualjourneys.com) took a very special interest in both Michael and Bryan, and the two traveled to her home a few weeks later, where Bryan to this day, cannot adequately describe the divine events he witnessed while Almine delivered God's healing love to Michael to repair the damage done by the one course of chemotherapy that he did have. Since the first healing weeks earlier,Bryan could sense something very different going on in his own mind and body, and God's plan started to unfold. Bryan had always been intuitive, but now he began to understand things about life, about the body, about God. He felt overwhelmed in a crowd, as if the energy of the people around him was being drawn directly to him. He spent many hours each day in prayer and meditation. His intuition gained precision.

He's a virtuoso performer riffing on drug abuse, muscle cars, the American civil war, and maleness." Harold Hoefle on Lynn Coady : "Pretend Flann O'Brien was a woman and randy James Joyce had not met Nora Barnacle, then pretend sexual communion and the birth of a girl - that girl would be watchful, scatological, lyric and playful. Lynn Coady." Ibolya Kaslik on Sky Gilbert : "Gilbert's central rambling narrator, Jack, starts with a clear enough thesis-like statement: "Teaching is learning; learning is teaching". As we follow Jack from his transformation from hip, urban, gay actor to small-town university professor, we learn some incidental things but very little about teaching and learning, except that it is probably not a very good idea to sleep with your students." Dimitri Nasrallah on Michael Holmes : "Rarely is the human condition so simple as two polar components. A young Nietzsche proposed such ideas but instead explored the polarity between reason and irrationality. Such divisions as good and evil build an ill-conceived moral construct within the plot that weakens the writing to a point where the author’s much-admired edge wears dull."

~Brother of Clay and Molly Usie~
IN HIS LIFETIME HE GAVE US MORE GIFTS THAN WE CAN COUNT...YET THE GIFTS WE REMEMBER THE MOST ARE THE ONES FROM WITHIN.
AS A CHILD HE GAVE ME THE GIFT OF SEEING THE WORLD THROUGH HIS EYES. CLINT SPOKE SO OFTEN THROUGH HIS EYES.
HE GAVE ME THE GIFT OF LAUGHTER, HE HAD SUCH A WAY OF MAKING ME, AS WELL AS OTHERS LAUGH.
HE GAVE THE GIFT OF LOVE. HE LOVED HIS FAMILY AND FRIENDS SO DEEPLY. HIS GREATEST GIFT TO ME WAS ALLOWING ME TO LOVE HIM IN RETURN. THIS HAS BEEN A JOY SINCE THE MOMENT I FIRST HELD HIM IN MY ARMS.
HE ALSO LEFT US WITH THE GIFT OF MEMORIES...WE DID MAKE SUCH WONDERFUL MEMORIES TOGETHER. EACH MEMORY I CARRY WITHIN MY HEART.
OUR LIVES CHANGED IN SO MANY WAYS SINCE HIS DEATH. THERE IS ONE THING THAT WILL NEVER CHANGE...THAT IS OUR LOVE FOR HIM.
WE STILL LOOK FOR HIM AND LISTEN FOR HIS VOICE. OUR HEARTS BREAK AT THE MENTION OF HIS NAME. I KNOW, BECAUSE OF GOD'S PROMISES TO US, THAT I WILL HEAR HIS VOICE AND TOUCH HIS FACE IN A FAR GREATER PLACE. THERE IS NO GREATER LOVE THAN THAT OF A MOTHER AND HER CHILD. I HAVE THE COMFORT AND PEACE OF KNOWING THAT HE IS NOW WITH THE ONE THAT LOVES HIM EVEN MORE UNCONDITIONALLY THAN I DO...
