MIKHAIL BULGAKOV: I AM A SATIRIST
One of Russia’s most mystic writers Mikhail Bulgakov was born May 15, 1891. The writer came to the Russian culture in the 20s of the previous century, a very contradictory period. It was a period of a new economic policy, when renovation destroyed the habitual. Literature was experiencing changes as well. Private publishing houses appeared, new books and magazines were issued, cultural societies were revived, people organized disputes on cultural problems. Great poets such as Alexander Blok, Sergei Yesenin, Nikolay Gumilev, Anna Akhmatova were still published at that time. Publication of pre-revolution magazines was resumed. A new magazine Novaya Rossia (New Russia) appeared, the first edition without any party belonging; it proclaimed desire of Russian cultural intellectuals to co-operate with the Soviet power.
Life of Mikhail Bulgakov began in Kiev among his loving and friendly family and his mother whom he called “a fair queen”. He studied at the medical faculty, then had medical practice in a small remote village. It was an uneasy and awful period in the life of Russia. Then was Kiev again. And then was Vladikavkaz where Bulgakov suffered from typhus and gave up a trip to Constantinople. This was the very place where career of Mikhail Bulgakov as a doctor finished, and his career of a writer started. Bulgakov wrote many of his most popular plays at beginning of the 20s.

    Kiev::Citizens::Mikhail Bulgakov Timeline
    • 1891 - Mikhail Afanesévich Bulgakov was born in Kiev. Father was a professor at the Kiev Theological Academy. Mikhail was one of seven children, the oldest of the three males. The family lived at No. 13 St. Andrew's hill (the Turbin's house in The White Guard , although there called St. Alexei's Hill) for about 20 years, leaving in 1920 never to come back. The father died sometime before the revolution, and the mother left at some undetermined point, leaving the house to their offspring. Mikhail started a medical practice, specializing in venereology. 1919 - Mikhail abandoned his medicine, moved to the Caucasus for a time, where he wrote stories for newspapers, and plays for local theatres. 1921 - Moved to Moscow. March 1921 - The New Economic Policy (NEP) was put into effect, as a result of agricultural disasters and labor paralysis. Many Communists felt betrayed, as it allowed a partial restoration of free trade, gave peasants the ability to sell surplus goods independently, and allowed private enterprise to be set up, provided it was leased from the government. late 1920s - The New Economic Policy ended, and the Five-Year Plans were introduced. With this came the RAPP (Russian Association of Proletarian Writers), a group under the intolerant leadership of Leopold Averbakh. They persecuted and pressured writers, molding them into only writing what they wanted - a few resisted. Bulgakov was one of them.

    A Suppressed Voice: Mikhail Bulgakov
    by Mike Knight
    March 3, 2002
    (view pdf)
    In his play, Don Kilhot, Russian author Mikhail Bulgakov writes, “There is much evil on earth… but there is no evil worse than captivity” (Bulgakov, Don Kilhot 238). Bulgakov is reflecting on his own life under dreadful internment during the commencement of Soviet Communism. Throughout this and many other works, Bulgakov becomes frustrated with his situation and portrays these emotions with his pen. Mikhail Bulgakov uses several great literary devices in a remarkable display of anti-Stalinism, while remaining critical of other authors and flatly rejecting inherent parts of society. Initially, by using unique character names and positions, Bulgakov utilizes symbolism. Every character seems to have a name that holds a definitive purpose, even if it was not intentional on Bulgakov’s part (Edwards 151-2). In his work, The Fateful Eggs, Bulgakov has a character named Rokk, which means “fate” (Zavalishin 331). With this character Bulgakov certainly shows how one has little free will in the direction he will go in life. The majority of Bulgakov’s characters have ironic names. He uses the name Berlioz for another character. Berlioz was a composer during the Romantic period, however Bulgakov’s Berlioz contrasts every value a Romantic composer would cherish (Edwards 151). Through using representative names, Bulgakov draws the attention of both the reader and researcher – a brilliant mechanism he utilizes throughout all of his works.

Unearthing the secrets of Northern Slave Life Modern Languages Professor Edythe Haber is the leading authority on the early works of one of Russia's greatest novelists, Mikhail Bulgakov. Her article "The Mythic Structure of Master and Margarita" is universally regarded as a classic. But her 1998 book, Mikhail Bulgakov: the Early Years, published by Harvard University Press, is now widely recognized as her magnum opus. In this study, Professor Haber offers ingenious and utterly original insights into the protagonists of Bulgakov's early works and makes a powerful case for their importance as stages in the development of Bulgakov's selfhood as a writer the selfhood that was essential to his final masterpiece, The Master and Margarita.

    The Master and Margarita, by Mikhail Bulgakov
    May 22 2001 12:43:00 Here's black humour in bucketloads. This novel, written in secret during Stalin's rule over Russia, has become a classic of modern Russian literature. It's a tale full of symbols and references (this edition has some handy notes at the back) which tells of the Devil's visit to Moscow, and the ensuing chaos. And it's much more too. A love story, an examination of religion, and an extremely funny dark satire. That said, a lot of the jokes were lost on me and I needed the notes to tell me they were there, half the time. I don't normally attempt classic works, but this one came highly recommended and I'm glad I gave it a try. There's a lot you can get out of this book, and I'm certain I haven't got it all yet, so I shall look forward to reading it again in a few years and searching for more. see

    Introduction
    Mikhail Bulgakov worked on this luminous book throughout one of the darkest decades of the century. His last revisions were dictated to his wife a few weeks before his death in 1940 at the age of forty-nine. For him, there was never any question of publishing the novel. The mere existence of the manuscript, had it come to the knowledge of Stalin's police, would almost certainly have led to the permanent disappearance of its author. Yet the book was of great importance to him, and he clearly believed that a time would come when it could be published. Another twenty-six years had to pass before events bore out that belief and

His best works, including the famous The Master and Margarita, were not published until after his death. His dramas were struck off the repertoire-The Days of the Turbins at the Moscow Arts Theatre and his plays about Moliere and Pushkin. During his lifetime, not a single major anthology of his short stories was ever published Bulgakov's works have since been recognised as classics; his books have been published in all the languages of the civilised world, studies of him have reached the four-figure mark and the number is still rising; editions of his books in the USSR have run into millions. He has won the highest praise from Gabriel Garcia Marquez of Columbia and Kendzaburo Oe of Japan. Kirghiz writer Chinghiz Aitmatov looks on Bulgakov as his teacher. Mikhail Bulgakov's books have at last come into their own with their wild fantasy and their prophetic ideas about man and humanity. Our collection includes one of his most vivid stories, "The Fateful Eggs".
