After burning all her stories and poems Fanny discovered that it was not so easy to give up her addiction to writing.
Once begun, she was to continue her journal for seventy years.
Fanny became 2nd Keeper of the Robes to Queen Charlotte but left service after illness in 1791.
From 1793-1815 England was in conflict with Revolutionary and Napoleonic France.
In 1814, she reluctantly returned to France where her husband took up his post in the army in preparation for the Battle of Waterloo.
In 1815, she returned to England with husband, wounded not through battle, but from a severe blow from a horse. He died in 1818. Her son Alex died in 1837 at the age of forty-two.
Outliving all her relatives Fanny died in peace and resignation on 6 January, 1840. She was buried beside her husband and son in Bath.
13 June 2002 marks the 250th anniversary of her birth.

Subject: Warming up to Cecilia
I do not usually read introductions until after I have read the book, to avoid "spoilers". Since I have already read Cecilia , I had no such compunctions. Margaret Doody wrote an introduction I really enjoyed, especially the background to the writing of Cecilia which, since it involves no spoilers, I will share here. Frances Burney wrote Evelina in secrecy, probably fearing the disapprobation of her stepmother, who spurred Frances to burn all her writing on her fifteenth birthday, including the novel she had written about Caroline, the mother of Evelina. The novel was published surreptitiously, and Frances' father was not informed until several months later, when its success was assured. Charles Burney was thrilled by his daughter's new found fame, and began including her in his intellectually inclined circle, which included Dr. Samuel Johnson. Dr. Johnson was taken with Frances, and began teaching her Latin, until her father stopped the lessons (probably fearing the influence of another male father figure). The powerful men of the theatrical world, Arthur Murphy and Richard Brinsley Sheridan, seeing the dramatic potential of the writer of

Patience: it's only my model" (Sidonie Gabrielle Colette) It was in November 2001 that I and two friends, Joanne Pope and Joan Wall, opened "Eighteenth Century", a cyberspace list. Within a couple of weeks, we found ourselves and fifteen other people planning to read Fanny Burney D'Arblay's journals and letters together. When the group had grown to about thirty people and we began posting in January 2002, we soon discovered that that while many were just reading Lars E. Troide and Peter Sabor's abridged Penguin Frances Burney: Journals and Letters , some were reading Charlotte Barrett's The Diary and Letters of Madame d'Arblay or the unabridged The Early Journals and Letters of Fanny Burney ; when the group reached the later years of Fanny's life, a few people read Joyce Hemlow's one-volume abridgement of, or some of the unabridged

Fall 2000
Time: Tuesdays 6:00 - 8:50 pm Room: TBA
Course Description
In the novels of Henry Fielding and Frances Burney, we will examine the foundation of the comic and sentimental traditions in the English Novel. Both accomplished writers of the eighteenth century, Fielding and Burney depicted the foibles and confusions of society in memorable prose narratives, and both experimented with techniques of story-telling that had a lasting impact on later writers. While we concentrate on their literary significance, equal time will be spent on the epistemological and social questions raised by the narratives. We will narrow the focus to four novels so that we can develop a deep understanding of each work.
Objectives
    This course is designed to meet the following objectives: to introduce students to two significant British authors of the eighteenth century;
