Robert Burns
Poet Scotland Born 25 Jan 1759
Died 21 Jul 1796
Robert Burns was the son of a struggling tenant farmer in Ayrshire, who nevertheless joined with neighbours to employ a university-trained tutor for their children. When very young, Burns read the Bible, the English Augustans and Gray; later he immersed himself in the poetry of Milton and the sentimental fiction of Sterne. The surrounding countryside was rich in folklore, but the vernacular poetry of Robert Fergusson came his way only by chance and it was not until his early twenties that he realised the possibilities of contemporary literature in Scots.
Meanwhile the privation and overwork of subsistence farming began the rheumatic heart-disease that was to cause his premature death. His father died less than a month after averting bankruptcy proceedings in 1784 and Burns, as head of the family, leased a farm at Mossgeil. He began to circulate verse satires on Calvinist extremists, and in July 1786 the Church avenged itself by exacting public penance from him and Jean Armour who was pregnant by him and whom he acknowledged as his wife in 1788. 'Poems, Chiefly in the Scottish Dialect' was published in 1786 and enthusiastically received and Burns spent the winters of 1786-87 and 1787-88 in Edinburgh, acting out with increasing unease the role of child of nature and untutored poet of the plough in which the Edinburgh gentry had cast him, seeking relief in the city's hard-drinking low life.

The story goes like this. Young Barnaby is befriended by Bill Hawks as the boy travels to Sacramento in search of the father he has never known. Upon finding the man, Barnaby realizes that his father, who had no knowledge of the son, already has a family. And rather than try to fit in, he decides to stay with the Wagon Train.
We got to watch Michael Burns grow up on Wagon Train. He appeared in no less than five episodes prior to the Barnaby West Story (ep. # 6.37) which introduces the character.

The total expense of the statue and its temple appears to have exceeded 3300. The statue has now been shown for several seasons to the public, in the building erected for it; but it is to be regretted that the situation proves to be somewhat confined, so that the figure is not seen to full advantage, and also that, from the neighbourhood of several factories of various kinds) the marble is liable to be somewhat contaminated in the course of time by smoke. It is to be hoped that some step may be taken to avert a result which the public could not fail greatly to deplore, both on account of the beauty of the object as a work of art, and the homage due to the illustrious person whom it represents.

    http://www.rabbie-burns.com/haggis/
    Gie her a haggis!
Jo Macsween tells Melanie Henderson about the family business and her own special love of the national dish.
The naturally queasy may balk, while those with heavily girded stomachs experience thunderous rumblings. Just as the turkey leftovers have all been well and truly curried, the mince pies are growing mould in the tin and the chocolate boxes have long been pillaged, thoughts of Scotland's most famous dish come to mind. Sated or not, soon it will be time to sample again that pudding of puddings that swells straining paunches still further. Still, like the festive binge, it's only once a year.
It was not always so. For although Rabbie Burns was obviously more than fond of the "glorious sight" that was "warm-reekin' rich" on his tea table, it wasn't a feast that would have been reserved for special occasions - or indeed for his own birthday dinner. In fact, says Jo Macsween, it was a common enough stand-by not yet elevated by rousing Scots elegy.
"It would have been a bit like having fish on a Friday. You would have eaten it about once a week. But it was no trivial issue to Burns. He talks a lot about the dishes that look down on haggis" - French ragout and fricassee - "And he's saying that after you've had haggis you're fit to fight anyone."

Established in 1610, The Globe Inn, Dumfries has long been associated with Robert Burns, Scotland's national poet. In 1796, Burns wrote: "... the Globe Tavern here, which these many years has been my Howff ...", and in 1819, the first of what was to become the annual tradition of Burns Suppers was held here at The Globe Inn in Dumfries, south west Scotland. At his howff (or haunt) his favourite seat still survives, and some of his poetry may still be seen inscribed by Robert Burns with a diamond on his bedroom windows. The Globe Inn is an important historic pub, steeped in the history of Robert Burns and Dumfries. Every corner is packed with fascinating memorabilia making The Globe a central part of any visit to Dumfries.
