"The master of imaginative fantasy adventure...
...the creator of Tarzan and...
...the 'grandfather of science-fiction'" The ERB Chrono-Log Life Line is a biography with a difference. It features both biographic and bibliographic information, all presented in strict chronological order - a separate site for each decade of ERB's long career in which he is acknowledged as one of the world's most influential writers. The addition of the hypertext feature in these integrated sites gives the Life Line a dimension which may be obtained only through the power of the InterNet. It is our hope that this will be of assistance to fans and scholars alike in their quest for a better understanding of the life and works of this amazing man.
The underlined dates, titles, and events will transport the reader to InterNet links featuring e-text PD novels, forgotten articles, poetry, sounds, artwork, photographs, memorabilia, fan pages, as well as a wealth of bibliographic and reference information.
The dates and events collated here have been gleaned from many sources - Caz, Day, Fenton, Heins, Huckenpohler, Lupoff, McWhorter, Ogden, Roy, Tangor, Zeuschner, et al.

Edgar Rice Burroughs
Search all of Edgar Rice Burroughs American novelist, creator of the world famous character of Tarzan, one of the indispensable icons of popular culture. Burroughs also published science fiction and crime novels, some 26 novels dealt with the Apeman. Critics have considered Burroughs's fiction often crudely written and chauvinist. His books, however, are still widely read and usually more interesting than the films. It is true that Burroughs often portrayed Africans, Arabs or Asians as evil or comic, but the stories also contain several elements that have kept them 'politically correct': Waziri warriors are brave, and his cave girl Nadara and Dejah Thoris, the princess of Mars, are courageous and resourceful characters.
Edgar Rice Burroughs was born in Chicago, Illinois, into a prosperous family. His father, George Tyler Burroughs, was a Civil War veteran. Burroughs attended several private schools, including the Michigan Military Academy, Orchar Lake (1892-95), where he was instructor and assistant commandant (1895-96). He served in the 7th Cavalry in the Arizona Territory (1896-97) and Illinois Reserve Militia (1918-19). After military career Burroughs was owner of a stationery store in Pocatello, Idaho (1898), and associated with American Battery Company, Chicago (1899-03). In 1900 he married Emma Centennia Hulbert (divorced in 1934); they had two sons and one daughter).

HISTORY OF THE EDGAR RICE BURROUGHS CHAIN OF FRIENDSHIP: The late Frank Shonfeld of England had been a correspondent of Edgar Rice Burroughs for some three decades, until Burroughs' death in 1950. In his later years, Frank established a loose network of pen pals who shared his love for Burroughs, the man and his works. He eventually named this group the Edgar Rice Burroughs Chain of Friendship. This electronic extension of his original informal group is thus named in honor of the memory of Frank Shonfeld. ERBCOF-List went into operation in August, 1996.

    Edgar Rice Burroughs
    Barsoom Series
Perhaps best known for his Tarzan series, which is itself a cross of genres, Burroughs' Barsoom saga establishes Mars as the stage for SF and Fantsay protocols to mix indescriminantly. The stories recount the exploits of John Carter as he battles with various green, yellow, and black men before he wins the hand of the red-skinned princess Dejah Thoris. Although Carter's adventures take place on Mars, he travels there by magical means, and Barsoom itself is inconsistent and scientifically implausible.

    • On Monday, January 27, 2003, the Xenite.Org server was taken down for maintenance. Regrettably, we inadvertently wiped out the drive and lost all of our data. Although we have archived tens of thousands of pages of content, all user registrations for our forums and banner networks were lost, as were all VBulletin messages and all Internet Book List entries. Restoring the full network will require weeks, perhaps months, as we need to update content gradually and our staff is completely volunteer.
    • The forums at SF-FANDOM have been rebuilt. Old links will no longer take you directly to the forums you bookmarked.
    • We have restored our Xenite.Org News page so that you can stay current on all the changes going on around here (and are there a LOT!). We'd also like to point out that the Xenite and Herkulean Webmasters Association is actively seeking new directors to govern the association. Check out
