Sharon Butala writes in Old Man On His Back
"It is time all of us who know about the profound beauty and hope, about a kind of salvation that is to be found in nature, joined together both mystics and pragmatists with a new land ethic designed to achieve a way of life that recognizes our kinship with the rest of nature, that recognizes, at last, that wilderness is the source of our human-ness and that without a vibrant and living natural planet, we cannot survive." Plains Folk: Wild Stone Heart
One of the wonderful things about living in a post-feminist generation in North America, and specifically on the Great Plains, is that it is possible for women to think and write publicly about different sorts of relationships with the land. Within my memory lies the time when male writers celebrated the Great Plains landscape, but female writers shrank from it. (I know there are exceptions, but I’m stating a generality here.) This always bothered me, as one of the celebrants, for two reasons. In the first place, I figured women were missing out on something. Although I knew from private conversations that many women lived a rich life with the land, the depth of that was missing was from public discussion. This meant I, personally, missed out on something. My perceptions and expressions are unmistakably male. I need women to tell me about life on the plains, or else I miss a lot. One of the women who writes in the new way about the plains is Linda Hasselstrom, of South Dakota and now Wyoming. Another, and the subject of this column, is Sharon Butala, of Eastend, Saskatchewan.

Perfection of the Morning
by Sharon Butala
This Saskatchewanian memoir was a bestseller in Canada...A memoir of midlife change shaped by the western landscape..."One of the most perceptive and moving meditations . . . on that mysterious and often misunderstood presence that we call nature."...
A Note About the Author
Sharon Butala was born in Nipawin, Saskatchewan, in 1940. She was educated in small towns in Saskatoon, and at the University of Saskatchewan. She gave up work as a Special Educator to become a novelist, short story writer, and writer of creative non-fiction. She has been called a "visionary" for her ability to look deeply into nature and see there a wild reflection of the human heart. Her book, The Perfection of the Morning reached #1 on the bestseller list in July '94. by Dave Yanko With a population of only a million people, Saskatchewan has produced a surprising number of famous or accomplished individuals. Here's our second list of 25 people who were born in the province (or who spent a significant piece of their time here), and their achievements, or claims to fame.
Arthur Hill (1922 - ) An actor born in Melfort, SK, Hill won a Tony in 1963 for his performance in Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf . He had major roles in the movies Andromeda Strain and Futureworld , and he starred in the television series Owen Marshall, Counsellor at Law Henry Taube (1915 - ) Born in Neudorf, SK, Taube received a 1983 Nobel prize in chemistry for his research into the properties and reactions of dissolved inorganic substances. He received an undergraduate degree at the University of Saskatchewan before pursuing his education and career in the United States. He's currently at Stanford University in California. Taube has received numerous awards and honors, including the Linus Pauling award in 1981. Ethel Catherwood Ethel Catherwood (1908 - ) Catherwood, of Saskatoon, won gold in the women's high jump at the 1928 Olympic Games in Amsterdam. Nicknamed "The Saskatoon Lily", The New York Times apparently called her the "prettiest girl athlete" at the games. In spite of efforts by some, including Canada, to exclude women from competing at the Olympics, Amsterdam marked the first time women received the status of official Olympic competitors. Canada's six-woman team won two golds, two silvers and a bronze.
