Since I read almost anything I am able to find books that my friends will like. But sometimes I find a book so good that I asks my friends to step outside their box and explore something new. Octavia Butler is an author I have done that with. It is a risk when you are batting 1,000 with recommendations the last thing you want to do is steer someone the wrong direction. Its also a risk because Octavia Butler is considered a science fiction writer. Most people that don't read science fiction will avoid it. And I don't blame them, I have read enough horrible science fiction to understand the desire to avoid the entire medium. Now ALL Octavia Butler books are not good for all readers. If you don't like science fiction as a rule I would advise avoiding Xenogenesis, until you become a fan of Octavia Butler. While Xenogenesis is a wonderful and powerful book, it is also very "hard sci-fi". On the other hand a book that I have recommended to many people and have purchased 6 copies because I have trouble getting them back is Parable of the Sower. This book starts her latest series and is a powerful story of a young girl and her journey both physical and emotional. This story is good for all readers including a young adults.
