Site map Samuel Butler Profile Poet and satirist; born at Strensham in Worcestershire and educated at the King's School, Worcester . He then went to work as a secretary to Thomas Jefferey at Earl's Croom , near to Upton-upon-Severn. He took up painting and there are two portraits attributed to him in the nearby rectory. Charles II is known to have had a high opinion of Butler's great religious satire Hudibras Hudibras while lodging in Holborn around 1658. In 1661 he is recorded as being at Ludlow Castle as steward to Richard Vaughan, Earl of Carberry. During the Civil War the castle had been captured by Parliamentarians and the contents sold, but during the Restoration, when the Court of the Marches was revived, Carberry (the President) undertook to make the castle inhabitable again. Part of Samuel Butler's work at the castle was towards this end, with account books apparently showing him making payments to craftsmen working on the repairs. He is supposed to have married around this time and was certainly still working on Hudibras , a satire ridiculing religious hypocrisy, while at Ludlow. He gave up his stewardship in January 1662 and the first part of

His father was Thomas Butler, Rector of Langar. He prepared to be ordained in London but then in 1859 refused ordination and emigrated to New Zealand, settling in the upper Rangitata. He returned to England in 1864, settling in Clifford's Inn. His letters home from New Zealand were published by his father in 1863 as "A First Year in Canterbury Settlement". In 1867 he studied art at Heatherleys School of Art. Butler wrote "Erewhon" in 1870 and "The Way of All Flesh" in 1872. Between the years 1869-1876 he was also exhibiting paintings at the Royal Academy. His writing covered art, music, philosophy, Shakespeare's sonnets, Darwinism and much more. These papers consist of an undated manuscript, a list "Things for the Dray to Bring Up" and a 1950 programme, "Samuel Butler and the Authoress of the Odyssey". During the Civil War I was a member of Co. E., 3 rd Reg.N.H. Volunteers, Infantry. I joined the Reg. at Morris Island S.C. in the autumn of 1863. At Christmas, a Comrade belonging to another Company came to me, and he wished to borrow $5 til next pay as he was hard up . If I could accommodate him he would give me a field glass he was carrying in security till I was paid. I told him, I was glad I was able to help him, gave him the money and took the glass. We drilled here about three weeks and were ordered to Jacksonville, Florida to do front picket duty. Shortly after our arrival my comrade came to me again to borrow $5 on the same terms as before. I let him have the $5 and took the glass again which I suppose to be worth between $15 and $20. About the first of May we started up the River and in due time landed at Bermuda F. Hundreds. We spent about a week erecting forts and breastworks to protect our base. Then we made an advance. General Benjamin F. Butler On the 14 th I had the glass, which was in a thick leather case slung over my shoulder and under my blouse. It hung down in front and just above my belt. A bullet struck it point blank. It nearly knocked me down and quite took the wind out of me. I thought the summons had come to go hence. A hasty examination showed me that the glass had intercepted the bullet, and on looking on the inner side of the case I noticed it had not gone through, although the leather was badly bulged.
