more about Betsy
Betsy Byars has written over fifty books for young people. Her first published in 1962 and since then she has published regularly. Her books have been translated into nineteen languages and she gets thousands of letters from readers in the United States and from all over the world. She has won many awards. Among them are the Newbery Medal in 1971 for her novel The Summer of the Swans, the American Book Award in 1981 for The Night Swimmers, The Edgar (for the best mystery for young people) in 1992 for Wanted..Mud Blossom and the Regina Medal by the Catholic Library Association for the body of her work. She especially values her many state awards which were voted on by the readers of the state. Betsy attended public schools in North Carolina and graduated from Queens College in Charlotte, NC with a major in English. She began her writing career five years after her graduation by publishing short magazine articles. As she began to read to her children, her interest in writing for young people began. Betsy lives with her husband Ed on an air strip in South Carolina. They are both pilots, and the bottom floor of their house is a hangar so they can taxi out and take off, almost from their front yard. The top floor of the house? Betsy's studio!

Betsy Byars
about this author
When she was a young girl living in Charlotte, North Carolina, Betsy Byars thought being a writer was a boring career, and never imagined she'd become an author one day. But years later, while her husband attended graduate school, Byars started writing articles for The Saturday Evening Post, Look, and other magazines. And as her family grew and her children began to read, Betsy Byars began to write books for young readers. She learned that her childhood preconceptions about writing were incorrect and that there was more to being a writer than just sitting in front of a typewriter all day. In fact, she discovered firsthand that it was exciting and stimulating to create her own stories and characters.
Betsy Byars's first children's book was published in 1962, after it had been rejected nine times. Since then, Byars has won the Newbery Award and the National Book Award and has received glowing reviews for her many novels and picture books. Kirkus Reviews has called Byars "a master of perfectly chosen incident and phrase." And The New York Times Book Review noted, "Byars has the uncanny ability to know the secret lives, the outward postures, and the exact words her characters would surely use." Today, Byars's books continue to be favorites with children both in the U.S. and abroad, and they appear on numerous state reading lists.

Gr. 1-3, younger for reading aloud. With the same tenderness and comedy found in My Brother, Ant (1996), this easy-to-read chapter book includes four more episodes about a boy and his younger brother, Ant. As they are about to go to sleep, Ant makes his exasperated, scowling brother check on that "something" at the window. Another time, Ant pesters his brother to play bear and then gets scared of his own game. One small episode captures a whole range of emotions: when his friend comes over to play, the older boy starts off by being embarrassed by Ant's silliness but then ends up protecting Ant when the visitor acts mean. The first-person narrative, the perfectly tuned dialogue ("Are you being a dog again? . . . Well, stop it. My new friend is coming over. I don't want him to think my brother is a dog"), and Simont's small, haunting pictures in line and watercolor capture the exasperation in the sibling scenarios, and the love. In the tradition of the award-winning easy readers by Sendak, Lobel, and others, Byars and Simont continue to make simplicity a delight. Hazel Rochman (Booklist/September 1, 1997)

Author of the Month
Betsy Byars
This well known author was born in Charlotte, North Carolina on August 7, 1928. Her parents were avid readers and they always encouraged their children to read. As a child, Betsy Byars did not spend much time writing. In fact, she thought writing sounded boring. And, her father wanted her to be a mathematician. When Betsy Byars began college, she intended to major in math but quickly realized that it did not interest her. So, she switched her major to English. She began writing books for children in the early 1960's and based her stories on original ideas or on incidents that involved her friends or family. Her first book for children was published in 1962 but was rejected nine times before it was finally accepted by a publisher. Byars has won many awards for her books, including the Newbery Medal in 1971 for The Summer of the Swans
Many of Betsy Byars books are part of the Youth Department collection of the Cedar Falls Public Library. Among them are the following:
  • The Animal, the Vegetable, and John D. Jones

Fall 1997 Volume 25, Number 1 Betsy Byars:
Techniques and Themes
Judith Callaway-Schaefer Betsy Byars is a prolific author of children's books, who began writing in the 1960s and has continued until the present. She has written about forty books, the most recent one being Tornado. Byars is popular: her books are sought in school libraries, and The Summer of the Swans won the Newbery Award in 1971. Although all of Byars' writing is fiction for children and young adults, it can arbitrarily be divided into three categories: (1) the fiction before the mid-1980s, all of which seems at least wistful (The Midnight Fox) if not downright somber (The Cartoonist). A subdivision of this category would be the books that use animals as a major part of the story. These first writings have the widest range of appeal as they are more realistic than the books after this time, and some even have great appeal for adults; (2) the cheerful recent books (the Bingo series, Coast to Coast, the Blossom series, etc.) for children 10 to 14 years old; (3) the novels written for beginning readers (the Golly Sisters series).

Moon and I
by Byars, Betsy . (Messner, 1992 ISBN 0688137040 Paperback ) Nonfiction. Grades 4+. This book was reviewed by Carol Otis Hurst in Teaching K-8 Magazine
Review
With a light and humorous touch, Ms. Byars tells of the way she writes her books. Throughout the account, she also tells of her relationship with a snake, Moon, which she found near her cabin. Her need to learn more about snakes in general and Moon in particular became an obsession that, for a brief time, dominated her existence. That obsession, the reasons for it, and the ways in which she conducted her research are so interesting and helpful that you want to read the brief book aloud at the outset of a research project.
