Byron, George Noel Gordon
poet england 22 Jan 1788, London: 22 Holles Street - 19 Apr 1824, Missolonghi
Grave location: Hucknall Torkard, Nottinghamshire: St. Mary Magdalens' Church
Born into a noble but poor family, George Noel Gordon Byron's worldly prospects suddenly brightened when his father's nephew William (the heir of the fifth Lord Byron) died in 1794 (he was hit by a cannonball at the Battle of Calvi in Corsica). Now he succeeded as the sixth Lord Byron after the death of the fifth Lord in 1798.
The young Byron had a good time at Harrow (where he felt himself greatly attracted to a boy called Edlestone) and a lousy time at Trinity College, Cambridge. But allthough he didn't learn a lot there, he made many friends, among them Scrope Davies, Francis Hodgson and John Cam Hobhouse.
In 1807 his first poetry was published in "Hours of Idleness", but the critics were severe. He answered them in 1808 with his famous poem "Scottish Bards and English Reviewers". In the same year he entered the House of Lords, but soon he considered himself not suited for politics.
Together with his friend Hobhouse and his valet Fletcher he travelled through Greece and Turkey. On 3 May 1810 he swam the Hellespont from Sestos to Abydos as a tribute to Leander. In Albania they met Ali Pasha and especially after Hobhouse had returned to England Byron indulged himself in homosexual pleasures, in those days not uncommon in Greece, but a very dangerous habit in England (he would live a heterosexual life afterwards, until in his final days at Missolonghi in 1824 he once more became infatuated with a young boy).

Byron, George Gordon Noel Byron, 6th Baron
Assessment
Ranked with Shelley and Keats as one of the great Romantic poets, Byron became famous throughout Europe as the embodiment of romanticism . His good looks, his lameness, and his flamboyant lifestyle all contributed to the formation of the Byronic legend. By the mid-20th cent. his reputation as a poet had been eclipsed by growing critical recognition of his talents as a wit and satirist. Byron's poetry covers a wide range. In English Bards and Scotch Reviewers and in The Vision of Judgment Manfred Cain (1821) raised a storm of abuse for its skeptical attitude toward religion. The verse tale Beppo is in the ottava rima (eight-line stanzas in iambic pentameter) that Byron later used for his acknowledged masterpiece Don Juan Sections in this article:

Byron, George Gordon (Lord) (1788-1824) Half Scottish poet who burst onto the literary scene in 1812 with "Childe Harold’s Pilgrimage." Even today, many Europeans consider Byron to have been England’s greatest poet, Shakespeare included. He was the most famous Briton in the world in 1824, the year the Greeks asked him for help in their war of independence against the Turks. Byron, who had visited Greece previously and was enchanted by it, arrived with nine servants, a dozen small cannon and colorful military uniforms. All Europe was impressed and began to support the Greek cause and contribute money to it. When Byron died of fever he became a mythical figure, and his is one of the few foreign names bestowed upon Greek children. Return to B Index

LORD BYRON BYRON, George Gordon Noel, Lord Byron. Hours of Idleness, a Series of Poems, Original and Translated, by George Gordon, Lord Byron, a Minor ... Newark: Printed and sold by S. and J. Ridge; sold also by B. Crosby and Co. ... Longman, Hurst, Rees, and Orme ... F. and C. Rivington ... and J. Mawman ... London. 1807. Crown 8vo., pp. xiii, [1], 187, [1], with the half-title, D3 a cancel ('Those tissues of falsehood which Folly has wove': the cancellandum, known only from the Ashley copy, read 'Those tissues of fancy Moriah has wove'); U2 also a cancel ('resignation' not 'Resignation' in line 9 of 'Childish Recollections'); apart from slight spotting a very good copy in near contemporary half diced calf and marbled boards (a little rubbed). The genuine first edition of Byron's first regularly published book, his 'juvenilia' rearranged from the privately-printed Fugitive Pieces and Poems on Various Occasions. It omits twenty of the original poems and adds twelve others. The first edition may be distinguished from its deceptive 'large-paper' demy-8vo. reprint, also the work of the ubiquitous Ridges, by two typographical errors on pp. 114 ('thnnder') and 181 ('Thc'), and sometimes (but not always) by the correct numbering of p. 171 as here. A further distinction is, of course, the cancellation of D3, which was not necessary in the reprint. It was the discovery of the cancellandum which finally settled the question of priority.
This is the 'slightly better collection of lyrics, the publication of which had momentous results' (Ian Jack). Byron, who modestly called it in his Preface a 'first, and last attempt', and promised it 'highly improbable ... that I should ever obtrude myself a second time on the Public', had looked forward with excitement to a notice in the prestigious Edinburgh Review. When it came, in January 1808, it was devastating: 'The poesy of this young lord belongs to the class which neither gods nor men are said to permit [i.e., mediocrity]. Indeed, we do not recollect to have seen a quantity of verse with so few deviations from that exact standard. His effusions are spread over a dead flat, and can no more get above or below the level, than if they were so much stagnant water.'

    Byron, George Gordon, Lord
    22 January 1788 - 19 April 1824
One of the major figures of British Romantic-era poetry, better known for his life than his poetry both in his own day and ours. That wild life and the assured, compelling poetry that came out of it conspired to create what is arguably Byron's greatest contribution to the Gothic tradition, the figure of the Byronic hero , although some folks argue that he deserves credit for the vampire thing as well.

Coleridge's 1905 biograpy of Byron as well as extracts from Edward Trelawney's Recollections of the Last Days of Shelley and Byron , itself a rather titillating read. [Jeffrey D.
