Cable, George Washington Cable, George Washington, , American author, b. New Orleans. He is remembered primarily for his early sketches and novels of creole life, which established his reputation as an important local-color writer. Cable served as a Confederate soldier in the Civil War and afterward was a writer and reporter for the New Orleans Picayune. His short stories of New Orleans culture began to appear in Scribner's Monthly in 1873; they were collected and published as Old Creole Days (1879). Among his novels are The Grandissimes Madame Delphine Dr. Sevier (1884), and Gideon's Band (1914). Cable's works depict the picturesque life of creoles in antebellum Louisiana with charm and freshness. Discernible in some of them is the author's moral opposition to slavery and class distinction. After 1884, Cable lived in Northampton, Mass. His later works, notably the essays collected in The Silent South (1885) and The Negro Question (1890), reveal his concern with social evils, particularly with the betrayal of the freed African-American.

NYC Department of Transportation Bridges Information Official Port Authority Site for the GW Bridge Othmar Ammann's Glory Genius, willpower and thousands of miles of steel wire went into the George Washington Bridge It was called the most beautiful bridge in the world. At the time of its 1931 opening, it certainly was the longest single span. To honor the engineering feat it represented, a stamp with its picture was issued, and the bridge became the subject of music, even a children's book. Yet, a section of suspension cable for the George Washington Bridge in the collections of the National Museum of American History can only hint at such glories. Three feet in diameter and ten feet long, the massive cylinder weighs an ungainly 34,000 pounds. From its ends protrude 26,474 individual steel wires, compacted under 400 tons of pressure. Before computers, this experimental section helped engineers model the effects of compression on the finished bridge's cables. Today, it represents an engineering marvel, whose creation spanned half a century of depressions, politics and the passions of two of America's greatest bridge designers. No matter when it was built, the first bridge to span the Hudson River from New Jersey to New York City was destined for fame. After the Civil War, a single span was determined most suitable for the wide, heavily trafficked river just west of the fast-growing metropolis. But materials and engineering skill lagged far behind the dream.

    Touring with Cable and Huck
Clifton Waller Barrett Collection One of the lessons MT learned at the start of his career was that a lecture tour was a good way to advertise and promote a new book. Although he hadn't toured since the early 1870s, by the summer of 1884 he had hired Major J.B. Pond as the agent, and contracted with George Washington Cable, author of The Grandissimes and other fiction about New Orleans, to accompany him as a performer. Together MT and Cable were billed as "The Twins of Genius," and took the stage for over 103 performances in about 80 cities between 5 November 1884 and 28 February 1885. For the first several weeks MT's share of the program usually included a brief excerpt from Huck Finn typically, Jim and Huck's colloquys about investing in stock and "King Sollermun" and also a number of old favorites from his repertoire of platform pieces, including "The Jumping Frog," "The Stammering Story," and, usually as an encore, "The Golden Arm." Dissatisfaction with the program, however, led MT to redesign it over the break the tour took at Christmas; it was then that he decided to make the last section of his forthcoming novel, the "Evasion" in which Tom and Huck set out to free Jim, the major feature of the evening's performance. When the second leg of the tour opened in Pittsburgh on December 29, he premiered the piece. In a letter to his wife, he said that "it went a-booming" "it's the biggest card I've got in my whole repertoire." Beginning in the 1920s, many people became troubled with the novel's Evasion section (Hemingway said, for example, that readers should skip it), but the thousands of contemporaries who heard MT perform the episode on this tour seem to have loved it. MT's letters suggest that he too was mainly delighted with the new bill. One night in Canada, however, as he and Cable were making their way back to the hotel after the show, MT turned to his companion and said: "I am demeaning myself. I am allowing myself to be a mere buffoon. It's ghastly. I can't

Mr. Smith discussed his book Patriarch: George Washington and the New American Nation , published by Houghton Mifflin, about the life and times of President George Washington. The book focuses on the last ten years of Washington's life. According to Mr. Smith, George Washington was not the figurehead that other historians have portrayed. He contends that it was Washington's character, not the Constitution, which held the Union together. Mr. Smith also examines life at Washington's home, Mount Vernon, his mixed feelings about his celebrity, and his relationships with John Adams, Thomas Jefferson, James Madison and Sally Fairfax.
