Who was emperor Augustus? Augustus, the first ruler of Rome after it became an empire, restored civil order, peace, and prosperity to a Rome that had suffered several decades of civil wars following the assassination of Julius Caesar. Born Gaius Octavius and adopted by Caesar, he was given the name Augustus, which means "consecrated", by the senate after he avenged Caesar's death and consolidated his power. He later received the title, imperator, from which was derived the word "emperor". (From: Microsoft Encarta Encyclopedia During his reign the Romans began to conquer Germania in 12 BC, but withdrew completely to the left bank of the Rhine River after the desastrous defeat of the Varus Battle in AD 9. The moment Augustus received the bad news he allegedly cried and shouted out loud: "Quintili Vare, legiones redde!" which means: "Varus, Varus, bring back my legions!" The name of Augustus is probably best known from the Gospel according to St. Luke: "And it came to pass in those days, that there went out a decree from Caesar Augustus, that all the world should be taxed." Yes and it was around the same time, when the Romans started to erect a base near the village of Waldgirmes, allmost 2000 years ago. Back to the main page "The Roman base of Waldgirmes"

The Deeds of the Divine Augustus
Caesar Augustus was the first Roman Emperor. In this document, which he himself composed, he lists the accomplishments for which he wished to be remembered. A copy below of the deeds of the divine Augustus, by which he subjected the whole wide earth to the rule of the Roman people, and of the money which he spent for the state and Roman people, inscribed on two bronze pillars, which are set up in Rome. 1. In my nineteenth year, on my own initiative and at my own expense, I raised an army with which I set free the state, which was oppressed by the domination of a faction. [1] For that reason, the senate enrolled me in its order by laudatory resolutions, when Gaius Pansa and Aulus Hirtius were consuls [43 BC], assigning me the place of a consul in the giving of opinions, and gave me the imperium. With me as propraetor, it ordered me, together with the consuls, to take care lest any detriment befall the state. But the people made me consul in the same year, when the consuls each perished in battle, and they made me a triumvir for the settling of the state. 2. I drove the men who slaughtered my father into exile with a legal order, punishing their crime, and afterwards, when they waged war on the state, I conquered them in two battles. [2]

Augustus Caesar
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. Gaius Julius Caesar Octavianus 62 BC - August 19, A.D. 14 ) was a Roman Emperor . Before he became emperor, he is often referred to as Octavian in English speaking countries. He was accorded the name or title Augustus by the Senate of Rome in 27 BC , and as emperor is often referred to as Augustus Caesar Augustus Octavian , or simply Augustus Julius Caesar made provisions in his will adopting his great-nephew Gaius Octavius Thurinus as his son and heir. In the Roman custom, Octavius took his uncle's name as part of his own. At the time of Julius Caesar's death Octavianus was 18. He was appointed as a member of the Second Triumvirate to rule Rome. To take leadership of the Caesarian forces he returned to Rome from Greece and successfully outmaneuvered

Preaching
A Decree from Caesar Augustus
Allan White O.P. 25 December 2000
Christmas (C) fr. Allan White preaches torch .op.org's Christmas homily for Midnight Mass. Caesar Augustus issued a decree and set the whole world moving. What power there is in a word. Caesar speaks and everyone is uprooted. They all return to their native place. Caesar's word calls people back to their roots. Caesar has a purpose. He wants the whole world to be numbered. He is counting his people. He wants their money. These people are not named, they are to be numbered. Their stories are not important. Who they are does not matter. What they can provide does. What they represent is an economic resource. A decree from Ceasar. Word comes from Rome. An order comes from the centre of power to the margins, and the whole world moves. Caesar finds himself at the still centre of this turning world. Mary and Joseph move too. They return to David's town because that is where Joseph's family started. David was a shepherd, just like those in tonight's gospel. The Lord took him from the obscurity of minding sheep and placed him at the centre of his people. David built a new city for his God, Jerusalem. It was the centre of every pious Jew's life, for it was there that God dwelt in the midst of his people. David, the marginal character, became the cornerstone of his people. David also had an interest in numbering his people. In chapter twenty-four of the Second Book of Samuel, we are told that he decided to count the people of Israel. His generals and his advisers wanted him against this. The people belonged to God, the land belonged to God, and not to David. The people were instruments of God's purpose, they were not economic units, or chattels to be sent hither and thither and yon by any earthly king.
