Tim Cahill on travel dreams
"A lot of us first aspired to far-ranging travel and exotic adventure early in our teens; these ambitions are, in fact, adolescent in nature, which I find an inspiring idea. Adolescence is the time in our lives when we are the most open to new ideas, the most idealistic. Thus, when we allow ourselves to imagine as we once did, we are not at all in our right minds. We are somewhere in a world of dream, and we know, with a sudden jarring clarity, that if we don't go right now, we're never going to do it. And we'll be haunted by our unrealized dreams and know that we have sinned against ourselves gravely."
Tim Cahill, "Exotic Places Made Me Do It", Outside , March '02 Tim Cahill's latest book, Hold the Enlightenment , was released this fall. Posted by Rolf on December 24, 2002 02:09 AM

Subject: "The Best-Known Tune Humans Have Ever Sung"
Friday, November 15, 2002, at 2:27 PM PT Today's audio update: Tim Cahill picks cotton. NATCHEZ, MISS.—I was joking earlier , quoting the Blues Brothers movie, of course, when I said this journey to the heart of the land where the blues was born is a mission from God. But right now, entering the Mississippi Delta country, there is a certain overwhelming feeling of sanctity, of pilgrimage realized. The blues style—moody or rollicking or boastful or bashful—developed in the Delta around 1900 and was, for a time, exclusively African-American. That isn't the case anymore. The white folklorist Alan Lomax, who traveled through the Delta in the 1930s and '40s recording music for the Library of Congress, said, in 1992, "Nowadays everyone sings and dances to bluesy music, and the mighty river of the blues uncoils in the ear of the planet. Indeed the blues may have become the best-known tune humans have ever sung." A 14-foot alligator mimes a log in bayou country Christian and I left New Orleans and made for the place where that tune was first sung. We drove north, toward Mississippi, on roads that wound through swamps alive with swimming logs that turned out to be alligators. We arrived in Natchez, on the Mississippi River, and contemplated history in our limited way. One hundred years ago, cotton grown in the Delta area was shipped out of Natchez, making it one of the wealthiest cities in America at that time. Nowadays, it retains a good deal of its former grandeur, but Christian and I chose to hang out "under the hill." One hundred years ago, this riverfront area was full of rough bars, which were, in turn, full of rough river men. Today, you can get a good catfish dinner in the Magnolia diner and gamble in one of the paddlewheel riverboats anchored off near the bridge over the river.

From: Tim Cahill
Subject: Licking the Microphone and Kissing the Floor
Thursday, November 21, 2002, at 3:23 PM PT Today's audio update: Johnny Sun tells what it's like to record at Sun. Giant guitar reaches for stardom on Sam Phillips Avenue Phillips had a portable recording service, and he taped and pressed local events: speeches, sermons, weddings, and graduations. He also set up a permanent studio at 706 Union St. in downtown Memphis. It was a former radiator shop that Phillips renovated largely with his own two hands, and it became the only full-fledged recording studio in the city at the time. Phillips recorded people like Riley King, who was called the Beale Street Blues Boy, or sometimes just B.B.—B.B. King. In 1951, Sam Phillips recorded a song most music scholars believe to be the first rock 'n' roll ever cut. A group of musicians who'd been playing around Clarkdale drove up to Memphis in an overloaded car, amplifiers strapped to the roof. They were pulled over by a cop, and an amp rolled off the roof, but the leader of the Kings of Rhythm, Ike Turner, explained to the cop that they were on their way to record some songs. It was their big break. It is a testament to Ike Turner's persuasive (and endless) line of patter that the Kings were sent on their way without a ticket.

From: Tim Cahill
Subject: Mysterious Ways
Thursday, November 14, 2002, at 3:18 PM PT Today's audio update: Tim Cahill sings the blues about tough times in New Orleans. Louis Armstrong NEW ORLEANS—We're on a mission from God. Or from Slate magazine. We're a little unclear about this. In any case, our mission, which we have chosen to accept, requires us to trace the history of the "deep" blues, from its birthplace in the Mississippi Delta to its ultimate migration to Memphis, Chicago, and eventually the far corners of the world as we know it. Our quest has brought us first to New Orleans, the southern terminus of Route 61, the so-called Blues Highway. We'll be moving north, into the Delta. Along the way, we'll be forced to drive luxury rental cars, eat the best local food, and stay in many fine hotels. This life is hell, but someone's got to do it, and in this case, it's Christian Kallen and myself, two guys old enough to recall the blues revival in the clubs of Chicago in the mid-'60s, and the San Francisco dancehalls of the '70s. We were working very hard, of course, but New Orleans was working effortlessly to hold up its image as America's party central. At Brennan's Restaurant, we dined on blackened redfish and a butternut squash bisque served at the table by a tuxedoed waiter. On the way to our French Quarter hotel, the venerable Monteleone, friendly young women in abbreviated costumes leaned out of doorways and invited us inside, where, they gave us to understand, pleasure that surpassed understanding awaited us. We explained that it was necessary to get some sleep. We were on a mission from God.

aka Tim Cahill Midfielder Once per match report read somewhere: "header from Tim Cahill went just over the bar". During the last two seasons the Ausie worked hard but seemed to drift at times despite outstripping our alleged 'strikers' for goal tally now and then. Does not get stuck in with quite as much zeal as Livermore, but guilty of the odd spiteful challenge. Generally, a deserving first-team regular and lynch-pin, but could use some better competition than presently available to pep him up and provide cover. Chants: None as of yet.

I recently got in touch with Tim Cahill about reviewing his new book, Hold The Enlightenment: More Travel, Less Bliss. It's on it's way and I can't wait! To brush up on Tim, I got out my copy of Pecked to Death By Ducks. In the intro, Tim says that he's been in travel writing for 15 years, and that was in 1992. It made me think of time, and dreams, and how time can be marked by what we're doing. In the winter of 1993, I first found out about Tim, and his piece "The Howling." It was about seeing the northern lights in Alaska and was what triggered the adventurous spirit in me. I then ravenously read more of his work in Outside, and hunted down his books, and became inspired to get into travel writing.

I met Tim for the first time a few years after that at a San Francisco lecture series and got "The Howling" autographed. A few years after that I had beers with him after hours at the Book Passage Travel Writers Conference. That was two years ago. He remembered that night in our recent correspondence, and it made my day. Over the course of the years of working at Travelers' Tales, I've met many authors who've been inspired by Tim. And I wonder what that feels like? Here's a passage in his intro that really moved me, and will give us something to chew on until I can review his new book.

Hold the Enlightenment: More Travel Less Bliss will release in September with Villard. Hardcover $24.95 Villard has this to say about the new book:
In Hold the Enlightenment, America’s favorite and funniest adventure writer returns with his most entertaining collection of essays yet, as he travels the globe and faces down challenges that are animal, topographical—and human. Hold the Enlightenment takes Tim Cahill to sites as far-flung as Saharan salt mines, the Congolese jungle, and Hanford, Washington, home of the largest toxic-waste dump in the Western hemisphere. With his trademark wit and insight, Cahill describes stalking the legendary Cas-pian tiger in the mountains bordering Iraq, slogging through a pitch-black Australian eucalyptus forest to find the nocturnal platypus, diving with great white sharks in South Africa, staving off enlightenment at a yoga retreat in Jamaica, and much, much more. In these essays, vivid and masterly storytelling combine with outrageously sly humor and jolts of real emotion to show one of the most popular journalists of our time at the absolute peak of his game. And don't you dare ask who Tim Cahill is. Besides being the writer that got me interested in travel writing, he's written:

Tim Cahill, a founding editor of Outside magazine and the author of Jaguars Ripped My Flesh and A Wolverine Is Eating My Leg, offers more exotic travel seen through eccentric eyes in Pass the Butterworms. Essays on diving in Bonaire, fishing in Montana, horseback riding in Mongolia, and kayaking misadventures in Glacier Bay give some idea of the breadth of Cahill's venturing. His scrupulous reporting makes the skewed viewpoint all the more enjoyable. An explanation of how people going naked in the jungles of New Guinea are protectors of family values (in the aptly titled "Family Values in the Raw") is logical, hilarious, and brilliant all at once.
