Course Reviews Course Name Camp John Hay Golf Course Location Baguio City, Philippines Comments from W. Wilson Shamekday, San Francisco, California, USA Situated at 5000 ft. in a former US Air Force R and R base. Beautiful manicured fairways and large, lush, lightning fast greens. The numerous pine trees and hilly terrain will test your shot-making ability. Disappointing 6th hole though. Carts are available. About USD 50 for green fees and USD 10 for caddy. The cool temperature and incredible scenery is reason enough to play this course.
September/00 Comments from Mike Malinowski, Makati, Metro Manila, Philippines I have played 32 courses in the Philippines and my favorite and believe me picking a favorite course in golf-mad Philippines is a hard choice is Camp John Hay. A magnificent setting recently renovated by Jack Nicklaus's company. Over 5,000 ft in altitude, CJH is very, very, diferent from the other fine courses in the Philippines. It is the only course with Bentgrass greens...and the greens are swift and tricky. The course itself is quite friendly. But don't be macho. The fairways can be quite narrow and the abundent trees and sloping fairways will make you pay for foolishness. I absolutely love this course. The course is rejuvinating hole number six, the green of which suffered from the lack of light. CJH has just opened an absolutely beautiful club house, making it when hole number six gets back on line what I consider the perfect recreational golf experience.

NEWSFLASH
CAMP JOHN HAY BECKONS Baguio City, June 29, 2002 (STAR) by Ray Butch Gamboa - Philippine summers are harsh and oppressive, but they’re everyone’s excuse to seek the exhilarating coolness of the mountains of Baguio. It’s just not complete without a trek to Pine City. Have you gone to Baguio lately? Fortunate if you took the Marcos Highway and found the wide, well-paved route a far cry from the pot-holed, landslide and road cut prone and time battered Kennon Road that wreaked havoc on your vehicle’s suspension and added at least another hour of bone rattling to your travel time. With this new alternative road to the country’s "summer capital" this smooth and safe, travel is a breeze. Our trip to the "city of pines" was through the invitation of our good friend and Fil-Estate’s corporate golf director, Jerric Hechanova. I am to include the Camp John Hay Golf Course as part of the series on "outstanding golf courses in the country" which I feature on our TV show Business & Leisure and similarly on this column. What met us was an entire leisure package. Camp John Hay’s total leisure package Camp John Hay, now operated by Leisure Inc. is located at Loakan Road in the city proper. The Camp John Hay Manor is an imposing edifice that exudes the warmth of Baguio’s character, surrounded by towering pines and sprouting riotous colors all over the sprawling estate. Majestic is the word for what greeted us as we got out of the Subaru Forester. Incidentally, the Forester was one great ride, a pleasure to handle, and made our travel a pleasurable sightseeing tour at a crisp pace. Embarrassingly, the racer in me came out again as I passed every single vehicle in front, what with power and high performance generously given by the Forester at a mere push of a button. There was no mistake when Nicky Mariano of General Motors Automobiles Philippines insisted that we used it for the trip.

CAP-CAMP JOHN HAY CULTURAL AND TRADE CENTER SITE OF UNIQUE NEW YEAR'S EVE AFFAIR MANILA, December 28, 2002 (STAR) "We won’t ‘Rock the Boat’, but we shall Rock the Mountains" says Heiner Maulbecker, general manager of the CAP-John Hay Cultural & Trade Center. "This will be the start of the latest tradition at Camp John Hay." The convention center was specifically built to put back Baguio City in the map as the premier convention destination in Luzon. "This early, we have already booked the National Advertising Congress for next year," Maulbecker said. Two of Manila’s most popular bands, K.O. NNS021002-11 RTC Ground-Breaking Ceremony Paves Way for Camp John Paul Jones
Release Date: 10/2/2002 11:51:00 PM By Chief Journalist Rhonda Burke, NTC Great Lakes Public Affairs Great Lakes, Ill. (NNS) Camp John Paul Jones and seven new barracks facilities at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes were moved a step closer to reality Sept. 20 with a symbolic ground breaking ceremony. The ceremony commemorated the start of construction on a new $200-million recruit barracks facility and infrastructure development of a 48-acre parcel of land previously owned by the Veterans Administration. "We are providing the training and equipment to win," said Secretary of Veterans Affairs Anthony J. Principi, who served as honored guest speaker for the event. "These facilities will save money, improve training and efficiency and send a better Sailor to the fleet to defend their nation." Principi noted it is fitting the new 48-acre parcel is being called Camp John Paul Jones, in honor of the Revolutionary War Hero, who is considered the father of the Navy. Principi said Jones' immortal words, "I have not yet begun to fight," should stand as a testament and challenge to today's Navy recruits. Also in attendance was Assistant Secretary of the Navy for Installation and Environment H.T. Johnson, Rep. Mark Kirk, Commander, Naval Training Center Rear Adm. Ann E. Rondeau and Mr. Peter Forester of Clark, Blinderman and Knight, the firm that is building the facilities.

The Life and Letters of
Lieutenant John W. Hanks

By Virginia Morris Hanks Taylor Editor's Note: Virginia Morris Hanks Taylor was the sister of Chatham County veteran John W. Hanks. This memorial to her brother was written soon after his death on September 15, 1916, and was graciously provided for publication in Cartersville Crossroads by Laura Munson Cooper, of Arlington, Texas, a member of the Hanks family. John Wesley Hanks was born on March 26, 1844, in Pittsboro, where he received a liberal academic education until the breaking out of the War Between the States, when North Carolina's patriotic fathers and many of her boy students enlisted for the service in the Southern cause. An older brother enlisted at once, and John wished much to go also; but, on account of his extreme youth, our father withheld his consent until some months later, when he yielded to his request that he might join the ranks of Co. G, 3rd North Carolina Regiment, on duty at that time in Virginia. John was wounded at the Battle of Malvern Hill and sent to the hospital in Richmond, where our father, who was a physician, found him and was allowed to carry him home for treatment. As soon as his wounds were healed, John returned to his post of duty.

"Respects to Lieut Cotten." Baltimore Oct 9th 1864 Lieut Jno W. Hanks. Dear Cousin: Yours of Sept. 28th and Oct 2nd containing the permits reached me yesterday, am glad you have at length succeeded in obtaining permission to receive some warm clothing for the coming Winter. I went yesterday and ordered your suit of "grey." but the tailor will not be able to let me have it before next Tuesday week. I will then pack your box and send you by express. hope you may be as fortunate in receiving promptly as all my other friends have been. I have friends now at "Elmira Point Lookout and Camp Chase. my favorite Cousin R. E. Seevers [?] is a prisoner at the latter place. I hope in this your health has improved. Will send your coffee etc in box with clothing. do you think it would be best to have the coffee ground fine first for use. if so will have our cook fix it nicely. am sorry you could not get a permit for a larger quantity and greater variety. The Doctor secured [?] the number of pounds from 5 to 3 (coffee) for Lt Cotten and yourself the desired "needle books." suppose you have both learned to be your own seamstresses since the War; I should like to see some of the mending! Don't get tired waiting for your box. Try to keep warm this cool weather. I sent you a paper last week. will mail another tomorrow Your Cousin
