"John Thornton Knight, 1880, Brigadier General, U. S. A., retired, died at his home in San Francisco, California, after a brief illness of pneumonia, January 15, 1930. He was the son of the late Captain John H. Knight of Poplar Hill, Prince Edward County, Virginia, and was born April 18, 1861.
"He received his preparatory training at Prince Edward Academy, Worsham, Virginia, under Professor James R. Thornton and entered Hampden-Sydney College in 1877, a member of the class of 1880. Camp Mensinger offers multi-level and multi-age programs. They include: Woodsman Program: Merit Badge Program: The unique half-day, one- and two-day Merit Badge program has proven to be quite successful. Years of experience have shown that traditional Merit Badge programs lose their effective ness because of the short sessions, lack of in-depth experiences, and constant turnover throughout the day. At Camp Mensinger, Scouts spend half a day or a full day (or two) per Merit Badge. The Scouts join their instructor at 9:00 A.M., go to the Program Areas, eat lunch with their Instructor and class, and finish class at 3:00 P.M. The advantages of this schedule are:

Hello Malibu Water Resources: We got the windmill up and running.
Overall it took three days.
On the first day, I put together the blades and the top eight feet of tower.
On the second, I put together the rest of the 20' base. On the third, I finished tightening all the bolts,
assembling the base/pump/blades,
and then with the help of three more guys,
three trucks, and a tractor, we got it in place. I went to Joe Mescan's winmill place to see his four examples around his pond (as seen on his web sight). All his joints overlapped (top piece over lower piece) so that water would stay out of the joint as we had talked about. Joe told me that it took from four to five people to raise a 20' wind mill on a calm day. We used the tractor to secure the two down legs so that they would not slide out as the top was raised. We then used a truck with 150' of rope attached about 4' below the compressor to pull up the tower once it was partially up. Three of us lifted the tower about 8' up and the fourth backed the truck up to let it do the lifting.

About the Author John Sandford is a pseudonym. The real Ah, you say, the Sandford connection. Well, yes. That's where that name comes from. It goes back farther than that, actually, but I'm not certain of its origin. Someday I'll take a look at his genealogical records and find out. But not right this instant. He was born in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, on February 23rd, 1944. This is a date that I almost always forget until the last instant, but that's okay, as he seems to forget everyone else's birthday until the last instant. Fair's fair. Anyway, there's not much I can say about his early, formative years, as I wasn't actually there After High School, he went to the State University of Iowa in Iowa City (and not vague At least one biography I've seen of him has stated flatly that he served in "the Korean conflict." He'd have been maybe ten at the time. Eleven. He did serve in Korea, but it was in the middle 60's. Right at the start of the whole Vietnam action. I have a memory of him telling me that of the 50 people in his troop at camp, upon graduation 48 of them got sent to Vietnam. I've no idea if this memory is accurate or not, but I believe it to be, and if it is, it shows you something of the luck involved in not going to Vietnam.
