Click here to return to Pleasant Valley Home Page Fisher's Diving Camps Session I July 6-11, 2003 Held at: St. John's University in Minnesota Table of Contents Our Coaching Philosophy The repeated success of our camp lies in the experience enthusiasm and genuine devotion of the coaching staff. Experience : Collectively, the coaches at our camp have over 50 years of coaching experience at the college or high school level. They also have over 25 years of collective coaching experience at diving camps, which is a claim that not many camps can make. While many camps use college divers that have little coaching experience, we pride ourselves on the expertise that we can provide to our camp participants. Enthusiasm : Our coaching staff is known for their enthusiasm during practice and other camp activities. This enthusiasm "rubs off", which results in a fun practice environment. The fun often continues into the evening during activities such as volleyball, movie night, dance night, and the world famous lip sync/skit night. Genuine devotion: Everyone involved with our camp shares a common bond. We are all devoted to the sport of diving. We believe that our efforts help promote and perpetuate a sport that provides many positive experiences to its participants.

This selection of photographs comes from an exhibition entitled "Fish Camp", a personal documentary completed in 1989. These large format black and white photographs depict two closely related fish camps on the St. John's River near Osteen, Florida, and the people living and working there.
The images from Fish Camp are pure Americana, human interest photography which captures the souls of the people and the moment in time.
More importantly, the images express humble values which some of us still hold in high regard: a simple lifestyle in rhythm with the environment where common sense is the rule of order. However fleeting, these values and the 'Old Florida' of my childhood, and my ancestors, still exists.
All photographs were taken with a Crown Graphic 4x5 camera and are available as Fine Art Giclee prints.

Armstrong was ready to talk about his off-season, Postal's new riders, and keeping his house in France.
His training clothes sodden, his face flushed from riding in two hours of glacial rain, Lance Armstrong burst into the lobby of Tucson's swank Westin La Paloma hotel, dropped off his Trek with a bellhop and, shivering from the cold, asked for his room key. Welcome to "sunny" southern Arizona, the place chosen for this month's U.S. Postal Service team get-together and sponsor weekend. "That was as cold as my hands have ever been," the Texan said in response to the first question of an interview he extended to VeloNews. Already, the cold ride was a memory. Now, installed on a comfortable chair in one of the hotel's plush upstairs sitting areas, Armstrong was wearing dry sweats and T-shirt. He was relaxed and ready to talk about his off-season, his team's new riders, and his racing prospects for 2001. The interview, shared with VeloNews freelancer Andrew Hood, began with that question about the morning's frigid training ride....

Karl Amereller John Copeland Elvin "Bud" Downey ... Greg Gordinier For many years I have felt guilty about the time I spent in Vietnam, and after 09-11-01 I feel even more so. I am sorry I was in a war where many died for no purpose. I am sorry for those that were killed in the WTC and Pentagon tragedies, and firemen and police who died trying to help them, and I am sorry for those that will die in Afghanistan - but there they have a reason and a purpose. It is no less sad, but they will be heroes forever, they will be remembered well. So many of my contemporaries lost their lives in Vietnam in the jungles and rice paddies, and in bunkers, in valleys, and on hills named only by numbers. They fought a enemy for a cause they did not know. They lived in hell and saw death, and faced it with the courage and strength that comes from youth and revenge and blind allegiance. We were all so young and all so at the mercy of the "hand that was dealt us". I was very fortunate to be stationed in Nha Trang, one of the most beautiful of Vietnamese cities. I, like many others who were stationed in "no combat" zones, saw little if any of the violence of the war during our time there. I worked in a air conditioned van, listening to the latest music on our Aiwa and Teac tape decks, printing aerial photographs and that we used to create maps, so our brothers in the infantry and artillery would know which hill they were on or shooting at which one was #419, and which #457 and so on. I guess we helped some, but I learned there, that life is not fair and I admit while I did feel guilty, I was very happy to be where I was. I spent 22 months in Nha Trang and I had some very good times there, with some great people that I have not seen since.

71. Camp Smalltalk CS3 (OOPSLA 2000)
Report by Squeaker john Macintosh includes coverage of camp Smalltalk 3 (CS3).

Camp Smalltalk (OOPSLA 2000) Sunday
OOPSLA 2000 (a SmalltalkFest in disguise).
It's coming the Squeak BOF Tuesday 8:30-10pm Room 208 A,B,C,D. Don't be late.
Greetings, it's late 1:00AM Tuesday morning, not that's unusual for your scribe. This time around I've decided to post early, so let the story begin. For other stories see Camp Smalltalk CS2 or OOPSLA 1999
Here are some pictures that I took at OOPSLA 2000.
http://www.eg.bucknell.edu/~zaccone/OOPSLA-2000/

also some from Ian http://www-sor.inria.fr/~piumarta/OOPSLA-2000/ and Donald http://users.erols.com/dmacq/oopsla1.htm Monday Oct 16th 2000 Tuesday Oct 17th 2000 Wednesday Oct 18th 2000 ... Thursday Oct 19th 2000
Sunday Oct 15th 2000 It's morning it's really early, in fact the sun isn't up here in Minneapolis. In fact it is so early I'm number one in the line for 'M's. Does that give some clue to the excitement building for OOPSLA and Camp Smalltalk? As I scan the Program guide looking for clues for what's hot, what's new, and what's exciting, what do I see. Well one of our Smalltalk campers is giving a presentation on JWARS, another is talking about GLORP, and another is talking about the ANSI test suite. Yet another is talking about Swazoo and rounding out the impact of Squeak on the community is the NetUnify.com folks talking about their work with Swikies.
Quite an impact the Smalltalk community is having on the show even if we don't get star billing. Who is doing the fun stuff, and didn't we do byte code prediction 20 years ago?

John N. Happy Camp Collection

Biographical Sketch of the Creator of the Collection John Newbold Happy Camp was born in Enid, Oklahoma, on May 11, 1908. After attending elementary and secondary schools in Blackwell and Douglas, he graduated from Waukomis High School. Afterwards, Camp attended Enid's Phillips University before beginning a career in banking. Eventually he rose to the presidency of the Waukomis State Bank. Long active in civic affairs, Camp headed the Great Salt Plains Boy Scout Council. He also served on the governing boards of the Oklahoma State Fair, the Oklahoma Chamber of Commerce, and the Christian Church Foundation. Blessed with a most agreeable name (among other things, it allowed his campaign workers to style themselves "Happy Campers"), Camp entered elective politics in 1942. Except for the very worst years of the Dust Bowl, Oklahoma's northwestern corner had been Republican ever since its settlement by Kansas wheat farmers. Camp's election as a Republican to the state legislature in 1942 signaled the area's return to form. It was also the first of his ten elections to one of Garfield County's two slots in the state house of representatives. Leaving the legislature after 1962, Camp sought the Republican gubernatorial nomination in 1966 but lost a runoff to State Senator

While that may sound like a cliché, the 2002 first round draft pick out of the University of Miami has been getting extra work shooting the ball and working on his game. “As a coach it tells you that he is conscientious about his game, about getting better every day and trying to become a professional,” Assistant Coach Randy Ayers said before Sunday’s evening session got underway.
