2. Ramsey Campbell : Short Story Bibliography
Ramsey Campbell
Short Story Bibliography - First Publications
The Liverpool born ex-Librarian Ramsey Campbell began as a writer of Mythos fiction under the influence of Lovecraft and the guidance of August Derleth. Quickly though, much to Derleth's distain, he moved on to create his own original brand of psychological horror fiction. He is still going strong, writing both novels and short stories which chart the darker areas of human consciousness. As a short fiction writer he has been extremely prolific, and the list here is but a subset of hugh number of tales he has had published. The quality of the tales varies, but all have the same terrifying atmosphere which enthuses everything he writes, even his most innocent scenes breathe tension. Special thanks go to Bobby Bickert for assistance in assembling this bibliography. For more bibliographical information see Ramsey Campbell's Official Web Site

Intervier by By David J. Howe
Ramsey Campbell is one of the most prolific horror writers working today. His work is distinctive and unsettling, often combining the familiar landscapes of his home town of Liverpool with a half-glimpsed nightmare world where little girls' faces run like warm putty, and a creeping, misshapen something is scratching and mewling just out of the corner of your eye.
Born in 1946, Ramsey's first novel was not published until 1973, but the seeds had been planted much earlier than that. 'I first got into horror fiction when I was five years old,' he explained. 'I was walking past a newsagents in Southport with my mother when I saw an issue of Weird Tales in the window. I wanted it. I remember the cover vividly: there was a birdlike creature in the foreground, and in the background, on an otherwise deserted black desert, there were these two other beings with huge skulls for heads and not very much else to carry them along, which nevertheless were advancing towards this unfortunate bird-thing which looked extremely unhappy about the whole situation. My mother refused to buy it for me and so I didn't get it, but the memory stayed with me.

Ramsey Campbell
Once again, on Tuesday the 26th of September 1995, it was a pleasure to welcome Ramsey back as a guest of the group. RAMSEY CAMPBELL has been justly described as perhaps the finest living exponent of the British weird fiction tradition, and in 1991 he was voted the Horror Writer’s Horror Writer in the Observer Magazine. John Ramsey Campbell was born in Liverpool in 1946, and still lives on Merseyside with his wife Jenny and their children Tammy and Matty. He sold his first story, ‘The Church in the High Street’, to August Derleth in 1962. Leaving school that same year, his first collection, The Inhabitant of the Lake and less Welcome Tenants appeared from Derleth’s Arkham House imprint two years later. Campbell worked for the Inland Revenue and later in a library until he became a full-time writer and reviewer in 1973. Although his early fiction was heavily influenced by H.P. Lovecraft’s Cthulhu Mythos (yet set in a distinctly British milieu), his subsequent books and stories have revealed him to be a unique voice in horror fiction. Ramsey wrote a detailed introduction in Dark Companions which gives some insights into his life and influences.

18. Campbell
Reviews and bibliography of campbell's work.
Horror World - Andy Fairclough's A to Z of Horror Fiction Ramsey CAMPBELL RAMSEY CAMPBELL is one of the most respected writers in the horror genre. Born in 1946 he originates from, and still lives in Merseyside, where a number of his novels are set. Campbell is the life president of the British Fantasy Society. First publication may have been DEMONS BY DAYLIGHT (1973) a fourteen story acclaimed collection. INHABITANTS OF THE LAKE, I think is also an early collection. THE DOLL WHO ATE HIS MOTHER (1976) has a brilliant title and was Campbell's debut novel. The book itself is reasonable. Never particularly captivating, the plot plods through the tale of a psychopath who has murdered and hurt various people. There is a neat twist halfway through, but not nearly enough tension to maintain a great deal of interest. The short sharp shocks delivered by THE FACE THAT MUST DIE (1979) make it very readable. The story is told through the mind of a total paranoiac who becomes dangerous and it is an excellent psychological thriller with some terrific set pieces. Next came PARASITE (1980) in which children hold a seance. They awake an evil and all flee apart from a terrified little girl who is invaded by the evil. In THE NAMELESS (1981) Barbara gets a phone calls from her long dead daughter and is led into a world of evil inhabited by those that have abandoned their names. STRANGE THINGS AND STRANGER PLACES (1983) was a collection.

Interior Art by Paul Carrick A Severn Valley Sourcebook with 8 Scenarios for Call of Cthulhu "The castle came into view as I turned the corner and left behind me a row of untenanted cottages. It was set on the crest of a hill, three walls still standing, though the roof had long ago collapsed. A lone tower stood like a charred finger against the pale sky, and I momentarily wondered if this were the tower around whose window bats had clustered so long ago." - Ramsey Campbell, "The Room in the Castle."
This large, profusely illustrated book collects nearly everything known about the Lovecraftian-style universe which famous horror author Ramsey Campbell set in England's West Country. Reference chapters include Books and Artifacts, Cults, a lengthy Denizens chapter, Magic, and orientation material for Britain and the U.K., and for Campbell Country itselfthe Severn Valley. The eight scenarios are organized into a loose campaign which can be followed or not, as the keeper wishes. Among the places visited are Brichester, Mercy Hill, Lower Brichester, Lake Brichester, Temphill, Severnford, and of course Goatswood.
