An Interview with Ramsey Campbell
by David Mathew Ramsey Campbell has been publishing horror fiction for over thirty years. He is the most respected living horror writer, with more awards for his work than any other writer in the field. His dark, brooding, psychological tales depend far more on the use of atmosphere and suggestion - showing only what needs to be shown - than they do on the use of pages of blood and gore. Regarded as a serious artist, he has been called the Horror Writer's Horror Writer. His latest novels ( The House on Nazareth Hill appeared in paperback in 1997) have received some of his best ever reviews. The following interview took place at his home in Wallasey in England, where he lives with his wife and two children. David Mathew: I'd like to start by throwing back at you a quote that you made twenty years ago. "The horror story is one of the few popular forms that has not been cheapened; the only one which has retained the force of a cumulative tradition." How far do you still go along with that statement? Ramsey Campbell: I would almost contradict myself and say that for a while the field has been in danger of sinking under its own dross, basically. For instance, I used to co-edit

The Darkest Part of the Woods
by Ramsey Campbell
Holidaying in Australia at Easter, I found an American edition of a book by Ramsey Campbell that had an enthusiastic blurb-quote from Interzone on the back, albeit for a different book entirely. I can remember being visited by a distinct sensation of unease, but I couldn't pin it down. Something about the triangulation of places, perhaps: with Merseyside's finest ending up in a Melbourne bookstore, having taken the scenic route via the States. What was it? Only a few seconds later I realised that the quote in question had been written by me, and that I'd been searching for a reason why the words sounded so familiar. I mention this only because it's an adequate representation of two matters concerning Ramsey Campbell. Much later in this review I will touch upon the second matter, but the first, I would say, is the reader's reaction. When Campbell is at the top of his game, there is often a moment of stunned acceptance a fluttering in the solar plexus, perhaps when you begin to realise what exactly is going on. And it's never pretty. Sure, you were following the plot, but you didn't quite understand the significance of (for example) that letter; and the result is like a flood of ink through your sternum. Black ink, naturally; for I maintain that Campbell is the finest writer of horror fiction in Britain. Or to put it another way, when asked to define a perfect horror movie, a friend of mine once said, half-seriously, half-joking, that it should be ninety minutes of that feeling you get when you think you've lost your car keys. I liked that a lot. Let's apply that to Ramsey Campbell's work. Let's open

    75. The Face That Must Die, By Ramsey Campbell
The Face That Must Die by ramsey campbell, 2nd edition copyright 1984, illustratedby JK Potter, published by Scream Press, Santa Cruz CA, ISBN 0910489-01-7.
    http://www.horror.com/books/facedie/facedie.html
Reviewed by Robert Allen The Face That Must Die Ramsey Campbell is an interesting author. His writing first crossed my path in the form of Cthulhu Mythos stories, and his book "Cold Print" [Scream Press, March, October 1985] , where he writes the dedication "For Fritz Leiber and Bob Bloch, who were there before me and did it better." Although I find the stories which Campbell weaves to be original and interesting, I find them hard to read due to his being British, and his writing with a distinctly British tone. Being the illiterate 'merican I am, reading Ramseys' stories require extra effort. His novel "The Face That Must Die" convinced me however that the effort expended is well worth it! The book is 213 pages, with well over a dozen examples of J.K. Potters' unique form of photographic art. The jacket ad blurb claims "Too strong for the New York publishing establishment, Scream/Press proudly presents this novel of murderous paranoia. This first hardcover printing restores previously edited material including a deleted chapter as well as featuring a long, autobiographical introduction written expressly for this edition." Strong words those, but the book lives up to them in spades. The Introduction goes on at length about Ramsey Campbells childhood in a disfunctional family. If you read the Intro alone, not knowing where it came from, you'd think you were reading a horror short story. It was scary. But it only sets the stage for the main story, The Face That Must Die.

    S.T. Joshi
Liverpool University Press/180 p/ (no price listed)
ISBN: 0853237654 (July 2001) Joshi can't do anything about the economics of the situation, but his work does bring deserved attention to both Campbell and his writing. He approaches Campbell's body of work thematically and does a commendable job of both analysis and literary context. Joshi is a thorough writer, but not a particularly entertaining one but that is said as warning only to the general reader. The book is definitely readable and, as part of a university press academic series, one can hardly expect a jolly frolic. Perhaps the single area Joshi touches on too lightly on is Campbell's influence on a younger generation of writers, but this is probably an impossibility at this stage. The history is yet to be written. Ramsey Campbell and Modern Horror Fiction certainly belongs in every library on both sides of the Atlantic, on a good many shelves owned by horror critics and mavens and should be read by any sincere student of modern horror. Like many other mainstream horror and fantasy authors, Ramsey does not stick rigidly to one particular style or theme. His last few novels have all been different, with different emphasis on the characters, different settings and different menaces.
