Campion, Thomas (1567-1620) English poet and musician. Campion is famous for his songs written to music of his own composition, collected in such volumes as A Book of Airs (1601), Two Books of Airs (c1613), and The Third and Fourth Books of Airs (c 1617). His lyrics possess rare charm and freshness, as well as a melodiousness and metrical variety that reflect their musical origin. He was also the author of Observation in the Art of English Poesy (1602), an argument for the use of classical, quantitative meters in English verse, which prompted Samuel Daniel 's Defence of Ryme

    Last Modified:
Kenneth Sparr´s Home Page During my research on the history of the lute in Sweden I happened to stumble across some information about John Dowland, Thomas Campion, and Philip Rosseter, which seems to be unknown to modern biographers of these composers. As a matter of fact this information has been available in print since 1929, when Hanns Bauer published his article 'Alt-Elbinger Stammbücher in der Stadtbücherei', (i.e. libri amicorum from old Elbing in the City Library). However it is more surprising that Hans-Peter Kosack could have overlooked Bauer's article, as he must have had this particular journal before his eyes when he prepared his interesting, and valuable study, Geschichte der Laute und Lautenmusik in Preussen. It is even more odd, considering that Kosack devotes an entire chapter of his study to English influences on Prussian lute music. Hanns Bauer gives a thorough description of the libri amicorum, but only one of them is under consideration here: the 'Stammbuch des Hans von Bodeck'. Before going into further detail it is appropriate to give a short background. The town of Elbing , now Elblag in Poland, is situated near the Baltic in the former German province of East Prussia. Elbing was founded by the Teutonic Knights in the 13th century, joined the Hanseatic League, and was its most important town in Prussia until well into the 14th century, when it was surpassed by Danzig (Gdansk). Between 1550 and 1650 the town enjoyed a new era of prosperity. By 1580 it had become the chief East Prussian port in trade with England. Quite a few Englishmen and Scotsmen settled in Elbing, and took an active part in the daily life of the town.

    79. Thomas Campion: Move Now With Measured Sound
by Nicholas Hilliard (1547?1619). thomas campion (1567-1620). Movenow with measured sound. ROBIN BLAZE countertenor ELIZABETH KENNY
    http://www.hyperion-records.co.uk/details/67268.asp
Compact Disc CDA67268 Poet and composer Thomas Campion was an almost exact contemporary of John Dowland, by whom his reputation has since to some extent been overshadowed. Which is a pity, because Campion's music makes an ideal complement to that of the mournful and melancholic Dowland. Rather than concerning himself with 'tears, sin, darkness and death' (quoting Grove), Campion portrayed life much more cheerfully, not to say earthly, in his many tuneful songs and instrumental pieces. This disc worthily follows 'English Lute Songs' by these artists (CDA67126), and will give equal pleasure. Also fresh in mind is the recent 'Salve Regina' (CDA67225) for which Robin Blaze (together with the English Parley of Instruments under Peter Holman) received great critical acclaim.
