PLAYA, BRISA Y MAR
Tu guardas dorados recuerdos
de mi Barranquilla
cuando era arenosa
de fragantes jazmines, claveles y rosas

http://www.ues.edu.sv/historia/rafaelcampo.html

http://www.progressive.org/camp1099.htm
BY DR. RAFAEL CAMPO Palomita chatters in one of my clinic exam rooms in Boston, her strongly accented voice filling the chilly institutional chrome-and-vinyl space with Puerto Rican warmth. She's off on another dramatic monologue, telling me about her new boyfriend. "Edgar, he loves me, you know, he call me mamacita . He want me to be the mother of his children someday, OK? I ain't no slut. Mira , I don't need to use no condom with him." Even the way she dresses is a form of urgent communicationthe plunging neckline of her tropically patterned blouse, whose tails knotted above her waist also expose her flat stomach, the skin-tight denim jeans, the gold, four-inch hoop earrings, and the necklace with her name spelled out in cursive with tiny sparkling stones. Her black hair is pulled back tightly, except for a small squiggle greased flat against her forehead in the shape of an upside-down question mark. "People think bad of him 'cause they say he dealing drugs. I tell them, 'No way, you shut your stupid mouths. He good to me and beside, he cleaner than you is.' Sure, he got his other girls now and then, but he pick them out bien carefully, you know what I mean. That his right as man of the house. No way he gonna give me

Grave things occur in Rafael Campo's poems: AIDS, intolerance, exile, the inequities of the health-care system. One might applaud such ambitionthat is, if the primary concern of Landscape with Human Figure were not to show the empathy and humanity of Rafael Campo. ("I'm all our pain," he writes in one poem, inclusively.) In this, his fourth collection, the Cuban-American poet-physician soberly offers his determined, metrical prescriptionsand further casts himself, as Randall Jarrell wrote of Muriel Rukeyser, as "that terrible thing, a public figure."
"Quatrains for a Shrinking World" is typical. One of its sections, "The Modern Cartographer's Lament," begins: My globe confuses me with distances.
An island only ninety miles lee
fades infinitely far, while Budapest
(at least the part that's little Hungary)
thrives only blocks from where I shop street stands.

Your concentration while you're shucking them
Is fierce; they fight against your prying blade,
As if intent to guard some plumbless gem Of truth. I squeeze some fruit for lemonade; The yellow rinds become a fragrant pile. More scraping from the deck, a stifled curse— You bring me one, the frilly muscle pale, Defeated, silent in its briny juice Like sweat expended in the effort to Remain inviolate. I slurp it down, One dose of aphrodisiac, and you Return to your grim work, all Provincetown Draped out below you, edge of the known world. I see what is left: bone-white, hollow-shelled. Rafael Campo teaches and practices general internal medicine. He is author of The Other Man Was Me , which won the 1993 National Poetry Series Award, and of What the Body Told , which received a Lamba Literary Award for Poetry.

These days, I do my own wash when I'm home, I cook for her so she can take a break from all the chores she now refuses to assign to me. She sits, half-watching Oprah through her tea's thin steam, her squint of disapproval more denial than it is disgust. She hears much better than she seesit's easier to keep out vision than it is to clear the air of soundsand yet I know it's age that stultifies her senses too. Rafael Campo Translates Garcia Lorca
Gongoran Sonnet in which the Poet
Sends a Dove to His Beloved I send this dove from Tuna to you.
With its endearing eyes and whitest feathers
it spreads love's fire, and also proffers
the Grecian laurel that the flames consume. Its honest virtue and its supple throat
twice soiled by slime and scalding foam-
its tremors, frost and misty pearls combined-
bespeak the absence of your mouth. But wait, just run your hands across its purity
and you will know its snowy melody,
as snowflakes swirl about and cloud your beauty. Such is my heart-by night and through the day
deprived of you it cries pure melancholy, imprisoned in dark love that will not die. Love Sleeps in the Poet's Heart You'll never understand my love for you, because you dream inside me, fast asleep. I hide you, persecuted though you weep, from the penetrating steel voice of truth. Normalcy stirs both flesh and blinding star, and pierces even my despairing heart. Confusing reasoning has eaten out the wings on which your spirit fiercely soared: onlookers who gather on the garden lawn await your body and my bitter grief

The Desire to Heal
A Doctor's Education in Empathy, Identity, and Poetry
"Rafael Campo is that rare and exotic hybrid," raved the Boston Globe, "a doctor-poet, with a sensualist point of view that leads him to explore... the eroticism of healing-the laying on of hands." In this "unrelenting effort to humanize the medical profession" ( Publishers Weekly ), Campo turns the doctor-patient relationship inside out, writing not just of his attempts to heal, but of how his patients have healed him. He writes of campy Aurora, "dying of love"; the elderly woman telling of her trip to the country to pick "big-as-your-hands" peaches; a hateful addict he wished would die; and Gary, whom he feared to love, "contentious and gossipy and irreverent." Campo's work, "reminiscent of Chekhov... [in] the way language comes up out of the body" ( Los Angeles Times ), restores "the transcendent power of language to redeem" as, throughout the book, "the narrative, and the narrator, only get more luscious" ( Out
