A Conversation With Orson Scott Card
By Claire E. White Nobody had ever won the Hugo and Nebula awards for best novel two years in a row, until Orson Scott Card received them for Ender's Game and its sequel, Speaker for the Dead , in 1986 and 1987. Ender's Game tells the story of Ender Wiggins, a brilliant child who is recruited into Battle School, where child geniuses are trained through game playing for their future role in the upcoming battles between Earth and the aliens who have almost destroyed humanity. Ender's Game was groundbreaking in its premise, and in its compelling portrayal of the brilliant children who were forced into moral decisions that even experienced adults would have found difficult. The third novel in the series, Xenocide , was published in 1991, and the fourth and seemingly final volume

Orson Scott Card is the multi-award winning and bestselling author of a number of ground-breaking SFF novels. Ender's Game is his first Young Adult cross-over novel in the UK. Nobody had ever won the Hugo and Nebula awards for best novel two years in a row, until Orson Scott Card received them for Ender's Game and its sequel, Speaker for the Dead, in 1986 and 1987. But Orson Scott Card's experience is not limited to one genre or form of storytelling. His works have been translated into many languages, including Catalan, Danish, Dutch, Finnish, French, German, Hebrew, Italian, Japanese, Polish, Portuguese, Romanian, Russian, Slovakian, Spanish, and Swedish. A dozen of Card's plays have been produced in regional theatre, including the musical Barefoot to Zion (written in collaboration with his composer brother, Arlen L. Card), which played to sold-out houses in Utah as part of the Mormon Church's celebration of the sesquicentennial of the entry of the pioneers into Salt Lake Valley. His historical novel, Saints, has been an underground hit for several years, and Card has written hundreds of audio plays and a dozen scripts for animated video plays for the family market. Meanwhile, Ender's Game is being developed for film by Robert Chartoff, co-producer of The Right Stuff, Raging Bull, and the Rocky series, with Card writing the screenplay.

Orson Scott Card
I came to Orson Scott Card's work only recently. I was reading some lavish recommendations of "Speaker for the dead" on one of the Sci Fi news groups and decided that I should give it a try. Well, I was blown away. Not only was it a riveting story but it was filled to the gunnels with profound ideas. I was surprised at how it resonated within me, could Card and I be so similar? But then that is the same sort of thing that I had read other people saying. Clearly he has the power to reach the souls of many different people.
The fact that Speaker was the second book in a series would have normally annoyed me. But this time I didn't even pause before reading the first novel, "Ender's Game" and then the (supposedly) last one, "Xenocide". They were excellent so I went on to read "The Tales of Alvin Marker", his next most famous series starting with "Seventh Son", every one was a masterpiece. I have since read a few more of his works but I didn't feel it was necessary to read every novel before adding him to this list.
His writing is beautiful. Not so much in literary technique as in his ability to transpose his understanding of the human condition onto the page. It doesn't stop there however, he has also tapped a lot of "Sci Fi" ideas. The sort of universal truths that we all hope our physicists will one day discover. It's great fun exploring them with Card.

      • The first four books of this series are a much more continuous sequence compared to the Ender series. This is a series set in the distant future in which Earth has been rendered uninhabitable by mankind, but a small foresighted part of society has apparently designed an artificial intelligence mechanism to disperse Earth's population to a variety of planets, each watched by an "oversoul" that monitors the civilization to ensure it never again acquires the ability to destroy itself. On one of these worlds, Harmony, in the city of Basilica, the series begins as the oversoul of the world, after millions of years, begins to break down to such an extent that people are starting to overcome its desires, thus making war on a large scale and taking the first steps along the path to weapons of mass destruction. The series follows a group of humans selected by the oversoul to help it overcome its problems, perhaps by establishing communications with the master computer, the "Keeper of Earth". As usual, Card has come up with a variety of very interesting ethical dilemmas, rather than your simple, everyday good vs evil story. While there is a focus on a central "good" character, Nafai, who brings back strong memories of Ender Wiggin, there are several good subplots and lots of space given to the development of other characters. The books are fairly fast-paced, and I found myself flying through the middle books of the series (whereas I've found with other long series, I tend to bog down near the middle).
