Other Surrealist artists and surrealist links When I discovered Leonora Carrington and Remedios Varo a few years back, I was amazed by their work. While linked with the surrealists, their work encompass a spiritual dimension beyond the subconscious/unconscious/dream,infusing mundane reality with magic. Often social satire of modern foibles leak through. Their humor bubbles up in many works. Their journey from the Old World to the New, from England/Spain/France to Mexico/US introduced them to a wide repertoire of legends, symbols, icons that they've woven into a new tapestry. These two are among the few artists whose work truly crosses cultural boundaries.

by Mario Cutajar The Remba Gallery , West Hollywood) An exhibition of 17 lithographs by Leonora Carrington is a rare opportunity to examine firsthand the graphic work of one of the very few women artists associated with the Surrealist movement. While Carrington has had numerous shows in New York and in Mexico, where she has lived since 1943, this is a rare exhibition appearance in Los Angeles.
Born in 1917 into an upper-middle-class English family, Carrington was headstrong and difficult as a child. At the age of nine, while attending the first of two convent schools, she de- cided she wanted to become a saint and acquire the power of levitation. However, her ambition, behind which one easily discerns a childish wish to be special and rise above the adults who ruled, or tried to rule her, failed to make her behavior more saint-like, and over the next eight years she managed to get herself expelled from one school after another. Her interest in art was kindled by a nine month stay at Miss Penrose's Academy in Florence, where she discovered the grotesque art of the middle ages.
Carrington's mother had hopes that her unruly daughter would marry a royal, but Leonora's debut at court in 1934 merely confirmed her lack of enthusiasm for high society. After much pleading and wrangling, her parents reluctantly agreed to allow her to study art. While studying with Amedee Ozenfant a classmate introduced her to Max Ernst, whose picture

Leonora Carrington Leonora Carrington was born on April 6th 1917 in a small town called Chorley, Lancashire in the North of England. Her father was of Anglo-Irish decent and her mother was from the South of Ireland. Her father was a wealthy industrialist who's company was affiliated with ICI and produced artificial textiles. Her mother, an Irish beauty , was raised as a strict catholic. Leonora had three brothers, Pat, Gerard and Arthur. The Carrington family lived in a variety of mansions, first in Westwood, then in a mansion called Crookhey Hall ,that remains for her as a token of magic and mystery . Finally she also lived in Hazel Wood, which was later donated to Jesuits by her mother, after the war , to be converted into an old people's retirement home. It was in these mansions, during her childhood, that Leonora was surrounded by beautiful woods as imagined in a fairy tale. Her Irish nanny, Ms Mary Cavanaugh, was central in her early upbringing, providing stories of all sorts many of them in Gaelic. In these surroundings of woods, horses and freedom, Leonora passed her first years of life. She would also travel frequently to Ireland to visit her grandmother with whom she was very close. During these visits to her grandmother, meeting the different townspeople, her Celtic roots were revealed. Nevertheless, her freedom was soon taken away. At the tender age of nine she was sent to catholic convents for education and finishing. One of these convents, Newhall, had been a palace of Henry VIII, king of England. However, the three years she spent in convents was an indeed traumatic experience to her. She spent these important formative years in essence as an outcast, not fitting nor understanding the nuns and their strict rules nor the upper-class British establishment. This was crowned by her presentation in court at age seventeen. However Leonora was soon to rebel against the established rules, to become an artist in her own right.

Artist: CARRINGTON, LEONORA Title: The Hearing Trumpet Label: EXACT CHANGE Format: Book Price: Catalog #: EC CARRINGT M Leonora Carrington (born in England, 1917) was a crucial Surrealist figure in the 1930s, while living with Max Ernst. She sent on to become an amazing painter, and has written a handful of fantastical novels; this classic work, The Hearing Trumpet , is the first in a series of reissues of her fiction to be published by Exact Change. One of the most exciting developments in the EC catalog. " The Hearing Trumpet is the story of 92-year-old Marian Leatherby, who is given the gift of a hearing trumpet only to discover that what her family is saying is that she is to be committed to an institution. But this is an institution where the buildings are shaped like birthday cakes and igloos, where the Winking Abbess and the Queen Bee reign, and where the gateway to the underworld is open. It is also the scene of a mysterious murder. Occult twin to Alice in Wonderland The Hearing Trumpet is a classic of fantastic literature that has been translated and celebrated throughout the world."

Paul De Angelis - What worries you today?
LeonoraCarrington - Above all, the idea of death, the fact that I'm old and our attitude to death is totally erroneous.
In reality we know very little about death, but if we know that a series of worlds exist that appear to be transforming.
Paul - Worlds more there than life?
Leonora - Yes, we distinguish life from death, but in my opinion things are not how they are explained to us. I believe that they are different for each person, like dreams. I think that to reach an understanding about death first we must understand the distinct places that exist within us, and dreams are one of these places; this is to say that The Paul and the Leonora of a dream are in a way a different Paul and Leonora. It almost appears to be like worlds in reverse. It seems that we have a body which unfolds activities, meanwhile our physical body remains inactive when we are asleep; with our bodies we do things, we go to places, drive cars, ride bikes. . .
Paul - Do you believe in reincarnation? You have an interest in Tibetan Buddhism which believes in reincarnation.
    Leonora

    - Do animals have a spirit?

After marrying the Mexican poet Renato Leduc in 1941 (a marriage of convenience), she spent time in New York before settling in Mexico in 1942, devoting herself to painting. There she and Remedios Varo developed an illusionistic Surrealism combining autobiographical and occult symbolism. Having divorced Leduc in 1942, in 1946 she married the Hungarian photographer Imre Weisz. There are more than 45,000 articles in The Grove Dictionary of Art .
