Saturday 14th
I had a tortuous night. I dreamt this psychic and ill tempered director John Sanborn had taken over the soul of the lovely Appalachian story teller Jo Carson. Jo Carson had unconsciously taken over his name to become John Carson, a spy. Her mission was to discover a better alternative to any of the 64 endings he already had selected for his new interactive film. I got up to pee in the middle of the night. Greg Roach dashed up to his room after listening to all the strange noises coming from the second floor. He was a bit uncomfortable knowing he had foolishly left all the scripts for his new CD ROM projects sitting on top of his bed. He had told me earlier that night "in this industry, everyone is out to rip off your ideas." I had to pee once again. All that water I had to drink in order to stop my dehydration during the day, was taking it's toll. I hear water flowing from the upper floors, I know I'm dreaming, I go back to sleep. 4 of 9

The Background The Pony Express mail delivery service operated between April 3, 1860 and October 28, 1861. Using young boys (orphans were preferred), the Pony Express was able to deliver mail from St. Louis, Missouri to Sacramento, California in as few as ten days. Inspired by this remarkable feat as well as by the moving stories of a number of women of the Old West, Nikki Tate wrote Jo'sTriumph , a novel of adventure and bravery set against the backdrop of the Pony Express trail between Carson City and Shell Creek. The Story In 1869 in and around Carson City, struggles between the Paiute Indians, the Washo Indians and the local whites are growing, fuelled in large part by ignorance and misunderstanding. During the struggles Joselyn, a young orphan, meets Sarah Winnemucca, a Paiute girl who becomes her friend and gives her valuable advice. When Joselyn takes that advice and escapes from the Carson Home for Unfortunate Girls, her boys' disguise and her love for and expertise with horses lead her straight to The Pony Express. The Author Nikki Tate has been crazy about horses since before she spoke her first word, "horsie."

An interview with Bonnie Jo Campbell
Where did you get the idea for the novel Q Road Oh, I’ve been living Q Road my whole life, whenever I’ve tended my mother’s huge garden or overheard my uncle Jim talking about falling grain prices. Whenever I’ve watched farmers spreading manure in fields and when I’ve read local history, including the details of the Potawatomi exodus of 1840. Recently, though, an incident occurred at one of the big old farms that helped me find the story to play against the backdrop. I don’t want to give away the plot, but it began with the idea of a boy who loves a farmer but nonetheless does something really awful to him. When that wasn’t quite enough, I added a teenage girla teenage girl always livens things up. In a sense this is the story of a piece of land, isn’t it? Well, first it’s a story about the intersecting desires of three people, but as I wrote I realized that the love of the folks in the story was all bound up with their love for the piece of land beneath them, and I realized these were not relationships that could be picked up and moved to any other place. There’s an interesting love triangle at the heart of this book.

... Member of the Arts and Cultural Highway September 15th, 2002 Carson City , Nevada features prominently in Jo's Triumph. This is where the fictitious orphanage, The Carson City Home for Unfortunate Girls is located and where Jo first meets Sarah Winnemucca. September 15th – Sunday We all enjoyed staying at the Royer Ranch located between Stagecoach and Dayton and gave Breezy a well-deserved day off. After catching up on some email and posting a few photos to the website, Jane and I headed into Carson City to run a few errands and visit with Bonnie and Dale Ryan, Pony Express riders from way back. In the evening we drove back up to Virginia City to meet my brother, Peter, for dinner. Pete has travelled even farther than we have to visit Nevada – he usually lives in Tokyo. In keeping with the flavour of the old west, we all ate big steaks for dinner – yum! September 16th After sorting mail, finishing up my column for Island Parent magazine, and organizing the motorhome a bit, we headed off to Gardnerville with a new crew member in tow. Tokyo Pete donned a red shirt, yellow bandana, and black hat and joined us at Gardnerville Elementary School for the delivery of the first batch of mail from BC students. Last year’s grade fives had a happy reunion with Ms Rosingus and eagerly accepted their letters. During the question period, there were lots of questions about Orcas and other Canadian wildlife as well as those about the Pony Express.
