Jo Stewart Randel invests her time in the past to preserve the Panhandle heritage for generations in the future. While growing up in Clarendon, Randel met families who helped settle the area. During the Depression she wrote about Panhandle settlers as a reporter and editor at the Paducah Post. "When I worked at the paper, I interviewed pioneers," Randel said in 1997. "I was so interested by their stories and the fact that they lived in such beautiful surroundings." She married Ralph E. Randel in 1937 at Clarendon. They had one child, Margaret Randel Koons. Her work as a historian began when she moved to Panhandle. She oversaw the writing of "A Time to Purpose," a four-volume history of Carson County. During her research she came in contact with people who worried their history would be forgotten. They asked her to find places for toys or Bibles, something they thought belonged to posterity. "They'd say, 'My children probably won't appreciate it, but it needs to belong somewhere,' " she said.

RAUTATIE HELVETTIIN 1971/1/1
Lehden koko on muuttunut nykyiseen muotoon.
He saapuvat parahiksi paikalle todistamaan, kuinka paikalliset pyssyniekat pitävät sheriffiä maalitauluna. Lopputuloksena kyseiset pyssyniekat vaihtavat työkalunsa Coltista hiilihankoon, ja lännen maisemat hornan pätseihin.

By the end of the workshop this opening should be able to be carried to its conclusion with assurance and skill. Dramatic from will not be elusive but will have become a structure to be implemented to its ultimate effect. back to top Writing for Performance with Jo Carson The demands of language and thinking for stage, either for performance art/ monologue or for a more traditional theatre/ scene work, are different than the demands of the printed page. This course will explore some of the differences. We will create new work and play with the performance of it so people have a sense of how what they have written might work. I use and teach Liz Lerhman's methods of constructive criticism, I want the course to be expansive and fun for students, and this is the best way I've found to do it.

Hugh Carson Cutler
David L. Browman
Hugh Carson Cutler, son of Manuel and Mary Cutler, was born September 8, 1912, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He died September 22, 1998, in Topeka, Kansas. Cutler employed flotation and serial washing, sieves of various mesh sizes, and differential wetting agents in retrieving palynological samples for his B.A. in 1935 and his M.A. in 1936 in botany at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He is best known in anthropology for his influence in persuading archaeologists to employ these techniques for the recovery of plant remains. After completing his M.A., he moved to Washington University where he secured his Ph.D. in 1939. Cutler married Marian W. Cornell on August 26, 1940 and had one son, William Cornell Cutler, nicknamed Bill, born in 1946. Cutler's interest in economic botany began with his Ph.D. fieldwork. His first archaeobotanical work dates to 1940, when he and his wife spent their three-month honeymoon traveling in the Southwestern United States, Mexico, and Guatemala, and collecting 60 wild varieties of Tripsacum and 300 cultivated varieties of maize, including some cobs from a 900-year-old Anasazi ruin in southern Colorado. As Cutler would note in 1964, this helped define his career commitment to "the useful plants of the New World and their relatives; studies related to the taxonomy of useful plants; research on the wild relatives, variability, and kinds grown by living people; and specimens recovered from archaeological sites" (H. C. Cutler, 1964, Career Statement. Washington University, St. Louis Archives).

T he Carson County Square House Museum was founded in Panhandle, Texas, in 1965. In 1967 the oldest above-ground structure in town was opened as a museum to house exhibits depicting the historical happenings in the county. Today the "museum" is a complex of 21 structures, exhibit units, and macroartifacts. The Square House Museum has grown from the founder serving as a volunteer director, assisted by a small group of dedicated residents, to a nationally recognized and internationally known regional history, education, and art center with a large, active board and a full-time professional staff of five. It can best be summed up by these magazine quotes: from Texas Monthly , "Best Pioneer Museum: the Square House Museum at Panhandle...;" from Texas Highways , "...possibly the best small museum in Texas,...;" from American Express' Departures , "...heritage museumsalmost every town seems to have one - the Panhandle-Plains Museum in Canyon being the biggest, the Square House Museum in Panhandle the best;" and recently from Museum News , "...one of America's finest small museums."

    Jo Clayton's Life Story
    (The Short Version)
Novels Short Stories Fact Sheet Jo's Art ... Main Page Jo's maternal grandmother was a mail-order bride. She married a man in Oklahoma whose first two wives had died in childbirth. Jo's grandparents had two daughters. They left Oklahoma and moved to California a year before the dust bowl, but Jo's grandfather, at 60, was considered too old to run a farm, so he leased his family out as laborers. One day Jo's mother, Bessie, and her sister went swimming in the river and Bessie's sister drowned. Bessie had to ride back to town with her dead sister in the back of a cart. Bessie resolved that all her children would learn to swim, and they did. In the '30s, Bessie eloped to Carson City, and Jo was "Born in Modesto, California, February 15, 1939 in a hospital they tore down soon afterward. Named after Jo in Little Womenprenatally predestined to a writing career?" Jo was "Raised on a sandhill that shook whenever the San Andreas Fault hiccuped. Learned the perversity of nature from the cows and a pinto horse called Chief with a propensity for charging through barbwire fences." Jo and her three sisters shared a bedroom, and they told each other bedtime stories. Penn, one of Jo's sisters, said Jo's stories were always the best, full of science fiction and fantasy elements. Jo's parents promised that all three sisters would go to college and they all did. Jo graduated Summa Cum Laude from the University of Southern California in 1963. After graduation, Jo taught in Bell, California, near Los Angeles. Of teaching, Jo said, "Labored as a teacher in assorted inner cities where my students taught me more than they ever learned from me. Quit after thirteen years only just on the right side of sanity (though I'm not too sure any longer what that side is)."

Josephine Carson (1919-2002) died recently after a brief illness at the age of 83. She had published three novels, Drives My Green Age, First Man, Last Man, and Where You Goin’, Girlie as well as a book of stories, Dog Star and Other Stories, and a book of non-fiction, Silent Voices, the Southern Negro Woman Today (1970). Some of her stories were heard on National Public Radio. She also wrote poetry and plays, and spent many years teaching. My wife Adelle and I knew her for several years and delighted in her wit and insouciance. These remarks were made at a memorial for Carson at the home of Frances and Ed Mayes. A few birthdays ago, I wrote a song, “You’re No One If You Don’t Know Jo,” which my wife Adelle and I performed. Jo did a Charleston. Today I’ll read a few passages from a review I wrote of Jo’s book, Dog Star and Other Stories , published by Santa Barbara Review Publications, and a short poem. You can find the entire review in the archives of “Foley’s Books.” I expect that most of you here know that the word “anthology” is by etymology a “gathering of flowers.” Josephine Carson is seventy-nine years old, but you wouldn’t know it from this delightful collection of witty, elegant, meticulously-written stories. Her people suffer but they do it in gorgeous sentences:
