Cassidy's Tale
by John Perry Barlow (Ken Schumacher received this from Barlow after posting a request for reminiscinces from people who'd known Neal Cassady . Thanks to Ken for sending this to me, and to John Perry Barlow for giving me permission to include it in Literary Kicks . It is a very beautiful piece of writing, and it also answers a question that had been bugging me for years: why did he spell Neal's name wrong in the title of the song? Turns out there's a simple answer. Levi Asher) Cassidy
By John Perry Barlow with Bob Weir
Recorded on Ace (Warner Brothers, 1972)
Cora, Wyoming February, 1972 I have seen where the wolf has slept by the silver stream.
I can tell by the mark he left you were in his dream.
Ah, child of countless trees. Ah, child of boundless seas.
What you are, what you're meant to be
Speaks his name, though you were born to me, Born to me,
Cassidy... Lost now on the country miles in his Cadillac.
I can tell by the way you smile he's rolling back.

Texts from Levi Asher Literary Kicks
The real genius behind the Beat movement in literature never published a book during his life. He appeared as a main character in many books, though, from 'Go' by John Clellon Holmes to 'On The Road' by Jack Kerouac to 'The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test' by Tom Wolfe. His free-flowing letter writing style inspired the young Kerouac to break his ties to the sentimental style he'd picked up from Thomas Wolfe and invent his notion of 'spontaneous prose.' Without Neal Cassady, the Beat Generation would never have happened. Neal Cassady was raised by an alcoholic father in the skid row hotels of Denver 's Larimer Street. A car thief with a unique ability to charm strangers, he spent time in reform schools and juvenile prisons and developed the suave instincts of a con artist, although he never seemed to want to con anybody out of more than a ten-dollar bill, a roll in the hay or a good conversation.

While skippin' through the lily fields,
I came across an empty space.
It trembled and exploded; left a bus stop in its place.
The bus came by and I got on; that's when it all began.
There was Cowboy Neal at the wheel of the bus to
never-never land.
~Grateful Dead Cassady spent hours doing intricate double and triple flips with his hammer in what I thought at the time was just dicking around;
not knowing he was using the hammer the way a juggler or athlete would: to stay trim, alert, ready. ~Ken Babbs He was a good driver but bad on routes. No one paid much attention on how to get from one place to another. Then we got stuck in the mud in Arizona, which was fairly typical, not that we got stuck in the mud a lot, but we were always having those kinds of problems. Neal loved every minute of it. Where is my toothbrush? I was trapped and I was feeling awful and then I realized I had to brush my teeth and my toothbrush was in my purse. Everybody was so stoned it was impossible to communicate my problem. I'd go up to someone and say, "I really want to borrow somebody's toothbrush and I know that you would probably not want to loan someone your toothbrush, am I right?" and that person would say, "Yeah, you're right," and I got back on the bus feeling worse than ever and Neal said, " I don't mind if you want to use my toothbrush." "Really, Neal? Can I borrow your toothbrush?" "Well certainly, ma'am You certainly can and here it is."He brought out the toothbrush. It was wrapped in a clean, white handkerchief. "I'd be very proud to loan it to you, " he said. " And it's never been used. "

A LTHOUGH his likeness appeared in the works of many authors, the three who were closest to Neal Cassady, best translated his spirit into the written word, and left the strongest record of the exploits of this modern American folk hero are Allen Ginsberg, Jack Kerouac, and Ken Kesey. With Ginsberg and Kerouac, Cassady explored America physically and spiritually more fully than any who went before. They were, as Kerouac said, a beat generation. With Kesey, Cassady became a fountain from which poured the teachings of his soul and his experience.
A LLEN Ginsberg was introduced to Neal Cassady in 1946 in New York City and was instantly enamored. The young Jewish poet from Paterson, New Jersey saw Cassady as an ideal hero and mate. "For the poet Allen Ginsberg, Neal Cassady was a man in whom spiritual and sexual energies were harmonious and complementary."( Daybreak Boys , 161) Their early relationship and Cassady's later rejection of Ginsberg both had a significant effect on Ginsberg's writing.("Then and Now", 50)
Cassady was Ginsberg's connection to a collective American spirit. Ginsberg was an American poet, yet he felt painfully separated from American society. He had trouble communicating even with other literary figures.(

It is a collection of writings about Neal Cassady's life prior to meeting up with Jack Kerouac and Allen Ginsberg (what might be called "the second third" of his life). He never got to live "the last third". This book contains letters to Jack Kerouac and Ken Kesey , as well as fragments of other writings concerning topics ranging from "Autoeroticism" to "The History of the Hip Generation". Jack Kerouac often said his spontaneous prose was modeled on Neal Cassady's letter writing style and it's easy to make the connection here. A must for any Neal Cassady fan. Book $10.36

Note: One of the features of Kesey's Acid Tests were these monologues that Cassady would give while the Grateful Dead played in the background. These were recorded on tape and stashed in the Prankster archives. This particular rap may have come from the Portland, Or. Acid Test that happened around Christmas, 65 or New Year's day 66 (I have conflicting dates on this). Another such rap has been published in Hank Harrison's book, The Dead , which was recorded the first time the Grateful Dead played the Straight Theater. Pioneers! O Pioneers! (excerpt from Pioneers! O Pioneers! by Walt Whitman)
When the origins and influence of the Beat Generation are considered, we see it as a post-war movement associated with large American cities with an artistic tradition. New York, at first, where the original core of beat writers met around the Columbia University campus, and a decade later in San Francisco. But in between these two cities, there's another place where Kerouac, Ginsberg and to an extent, Burroughs, fit in and made lifelong friends. Denver Colorado was home not only to Neal Cassady, but to a whole group of young people who remain largely unknown, but who's lives reflect the working class aspect of beat culture, and also show us how close to the real roots of American culture beat culture actually is. Allen Ginsberg told his friend Robert La Vigne that after Howl's publication he got more mail from the mid west than from the big costal cities. Maybe that sums it up. LuAnne Henderson said that nobody cared that Jack and Allen were working on their writing. They were kids, they just wanted to grab a beer and have some fun. And that's important, too.

In Desolation Angels Kerouac writes about Cassady's hello goodbye when advance copies of On The Road arrive: One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest Dog Soldiers , a novel that evokes Cassady as scamming just-this-once heroin smuggler anti-hero who eventually walks out of the ending disaster down the railroad tracks to die of physical and spiritual exhaustion and overexposure to the world. Kesey indiscriminately raids the drug cabinets at the hospital and brings home to share with Stone whatever he finds. One late morning off from work they are sitting on the front yard of the house in Missoula talking and waiting to see what will happen with the drug of the week. Soon they are relaxed and lying on the lawn and talking. The aspiring junior banker in a suit comes home for lunch and looks at them in silent disapproval.

Many people claim Neal Cassady is the genius behind the Beats, though his art lies in living rather than writing. Cassady never publishes a book during his life, but his energy fuels a great part of the Beat movement. He appears as a main character in many books, most famously Jack Kerouac's On The Road , but also Tom Wolfe's The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test The Beats are great lovers of their friends and think nothing of trucking themselves from one coast to another for the sake of visiting each other or to meet someone who a friend recommends, and Neal seems to have originated this trait as one of the Beat mores. So it seems appropriate that when a friend of young Neal's named Hal Chase leaves Denver to enroll at Columbia University, Cassady travels in December 1946 to New York to visit him. Here Cassady meets Kerouac and Ginsberg, and here Ginsberg immediately falls in love with Cassady, whose street hustler's instinct leads him to conform to the illusions and delusions of others, so he begins a sexual relationship with Ginsberg, which he balances with numerous heterosexual relationships, many of which last for only a night or for only an hour. Cassady's seductions are legion.

-'The Other One' by The Grateful Dead Born in Salt Lake City, Utah, Cassady was at the center of the 'Beat' movement and without whom, the whole Beat Generation would never have happened.. Although he never published a book during his life, he appeared in many books from On The Road by Jack Kerouac to The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test by Tom Wolfe. In December 1946. he went to New York where he met Jack Kerouac and Allen Ginsberg. Ginsberg immediately fell in love with him and Cassady began a sexual relationship with him, punctuated by numerous heterosexual other relationships. Cassady and Kerouac began a series of adventures that would later become Kerouac's On The Road . They raced across the U.S.A. and Mexico, with Cassady at the wheel. Kerouac had the idea to write the book the way Cassady talked, in a rush of mad ecstasy, without self-consciousness or mental hesitation. It worked: 'On The Road' became a literary sensation.
