BIOGRAPHIE

66. Neal Cassady's Biography

http://www.angelfire.com/mo/abalot/nealcassady.html
Neal Cassady, one of the most famous personalities behind the Beat literary movement, never published a book during his lifetime. He did appear as a main character in many books, though, including On the Road , by Jack Kerouac (he's Dean Moriarty, the "holy goof"), The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test , by Tom Wolfe (he's "Further"'s bus driver), and Go , by John Clellon Holmes. Cassady was a Beat hero and occasional writer, often described as a personification of "fast living high on jazz and drugs, sex, and freedom." Neal Cassady was born on February 8, 1926 in Salt Lake City, Utah. He was raised by an alcoholic father in the skid row hotels of Denver's Larimer Street. Between the ages of fourteen and twenty-one he stole more than 500 cars. Cassady possessed a unique ability to charm (and swindle) strangers, although he never seemed to want to con anybody out of more than a ten-dollar bill or a good conversation. He spent a lot of time in reform schools and juvenile prisons during his youth. A friend named Hal Chase left Denver to enroll at Columbia University, and Cassady traveled to New York to visit him in December 1946. It was there that he met Jack Kerouac and Allen Ginsberg/a>. Cassady began asking Kerouac to help him learn to write fiction. Ginsberg immediately fell in love with Cassady, writing numerous poems about him (as in

Carolyn Cassady from Off the Road, 1990 He confined his conversation to smart retorts, abstract bravado or stories of exploits designed to impress me, either on his own or those of a friend, one Neal Cassady. To Bill, Neal was a hero whose praises needed singing. Bill told me of daring escapades in cars, near-brushes with the law, deep intellectual and musical safaris. Columbia University When I opened the door at his knock, I saw that he was not alone. Behind him stood another man, who now strode past me into the room, his eyes quickly categorizing the contents before he turned to acknowledge Bill's introduction. 'Cari, this is Neal Cassady.' I could only stare, flustered by the myth made flesh. Neal nodded, and in that instant the sweep of his blue eyes made me feel I had been thoroughly appraised. I cursed Bill's failure to warn me. The advance publicity on this man had already made him unique, but I was not prepared for his appearance - not so much the physical aspects - which were all pretty average - it was his suit. Though not the authentic 'zoot', it had the same aura, and I'd never been closer to one than the movie screen. It gave him a Runyonesque flavour, a dangerous glamor heightened by the white T-shirt and bare muscular neck. Neal walked across the room to the phonograph and turned to me, a statue by the door.

Ostensibly, it's a release party for her new self-titled CD, but it becomes a reunion of sorts between Wenstrom and two friends who grew up between Los Gatos and Saratoga at the knee of a Beat Generation icon and who came of age during the Vietnam War and the Summer of Love. "John, will you join me on guitar?" Wenstrom asks between songs. A tall man with long white hair gets up from the front table. "Let's rock," he says, grabbing an electric guitar by the neck and sitting down next to her. They start to play, John slowly following with a melody that becomes more confident as he gets a feel for the song. "John" is John Cassady, son of Neal Cassady, the San Jose Southern Pacific Railroad brakeman who was the inspiration for the character Dean Moriarity in Jack Kerouac's On the Road John Cassady and Wenstrom knew each other as "kids" when Wenstrom was a student at Berkeley. Even as a young man, Cassady had his trademark long white hair. Wenstrom looks a lot like Goldie Hawn did about a decade ago. The two saw the Rolling Stones at Altamont together. They road-tripped to Tijuana, hiding Cassady's long hair under an ace bandage to cross the border. (He had a head wound, they told the border guards, notoriously suspicious of hippies.)

Avventure auto/erotiche
The First Third , pubblicata da City Lights e ancora inedita in Italia, dalla quale abbiamo tratto questo capitolo dedicato allo sport preferito di Cassady: il furto d'auto. Neal Cassady died more than thirty years ago, on the forth of February 1968. He was mostly known as Jack Kerouac's travelling buddy in On the Road . But Neal Cassady tried being a writer himself: with a dizzy and tentacular prose Cassady told his life story in The First Third , from which Trax has chosen the pages dedicated to car theft, Cassady's favorite pastime.

Speeding Toward Death
Neal Cassady, Charlie Parker, and Escape in the 1950s
Leave it to Beaver. McDonald’s. Automated dishwashers. Levittown.
Heroin. Bebop. Speed. Madness. Freedom. A movement arose among the artists of 1950s America as a reaction to the time’s prevailing conformity and affluence whose members attempted to extract all they could from life, often in a strikingly self-destructive way. Specifically, the Beat writers and jazz musicians of the era found escape from society in drugs and fast living. But what exactly led so many to this dangerous path? Why did they choose drugs and speed to implement their rebellion? A preliminary look at the contradictions that prevailed in 1950s American society may give some insight into these artists’ world. Neal Cassady and the Cult of Speed Neal Cassady did nothing slowly. Represented as Dean Moriarty in Kerouac’s On the Road , he possessed apparently boundless energy. Dean constantly seemed to be doing everything at the same time. It was a shaking of the head, up and down, sideways; jerky, vigorous hands; quick walking, sitting, crossing the legs, uncrossing, getting up, rubbing the hands, rubbing his fly, hitching his pants, looking up and saying ‘Am,’ and sudden slitting of the eyes to see everywhere; and all the time he was grabbing me by the ribs and talking, talking (114). This unconscious search for death within a conscious search for experience led naturally to the use of amphetamines. When using various forms of speed, particularly Benzedrine, the Beats could forego sleep and food and devote 24 hours a day to their experiences. Driving all day and night or writing steadily for days and nights on end, as Kerouac was known to do, became simple tasks with these chemical aids. If the goal was to experience as much as possible, amphetamines were a natural means to this end, since they allowed their users to live even faster and thereby theoretically see and do twice as much as they could sober. Other drugs also fit logically into the experience-seeking Beat lifestyle, though not because they accelerated the pace of life.
