Cato the Elder 234 - 149 BC. Marcus Porcius Cato was a wealthy Roman landowner who strongly believed in the traditional Roman Republican values and stood as a symbol for those ideals. He believed that the rural, farming life was the best and most virtuous life for a Roman citizen. He believed that the Greek culture and ways that were brought back to Rome by her conquering armies actually did more to weaken the Roman people than to strengthen the state. He also saw Carthage as a major menace to Rome and, when he was a Senator, ended every speech he made with the words "Carthage must be destroyed", regardless of what the rest of the speech was about. He even brought a huge bunch of grapes, grown in Carthagenian soil, to a meeting of the Senate in order to impress upon the rest of the senators that Carthage's great agricultural capacity posed a dangerous threat to Roman leadership in the Mediterranean. It was partly due to Cato's constant inveighing against Carthage that Rome imposed an impossible ultimatum upon the city. This led to the Third Punic War in which Carthage was burned, her inhabitants slaughtered, and even the stones from which the city was built were scattered. The Romans even symbolically sowed the earth with salt around the site of the destroyed city in effect saying that Carthage would never rise from the ashes. One hundred years later, Carthage was an important Roman town in North Africa.

A Changing Economy and Culture: Cato the Elder
Reading: Plutarch, Cato the Elder, in your textbook, Plutarch, Roman Lives. A major historical source for the Roman Republic, especially for those periods where the account of the Roman historian Livy is missing, are Plutarch's biographies. Plutarch was a Greek writer from Chaeronaea in Boeotia (Greece) who composed his 'Parallel Lives of Eminent Greeks and Romans' in the first decades of the second century AD (note that this is about two and a half centuries after the main events of Cato's life). Cato the Elder's life (from 230s to 149 BC) spanned one of the most important phases in the development of the Republic, from the second war with Carthage, against the Carthaginian general Hannibal, through the great post-Hannibalic changes in the Roman and Italian society and economy. Since Cato was a rising 'new man' (novus homo) in the power elite of the Roman ruling order, in many ways he is a particularly good example of these changes as they were experienced by one person at the heart of Roman society. Some Questions: What major themes are found in this life of Cato in terms of economic and cultural changes affecting Roman society of the time? How is Cato's life seen as exemplifying a Roman response to these changes? How do tradition and innovation play roles in his own rise to power, and in the maintenance of his social position? If this is a biography, how is it different from many biographies we might read today? Why?

This blog is dedicated to the War on Terrorism in general, and the danger posed by the combination of Wahoobi fundamentalism and giga-petrodollars, in particular. BTW, the spelling "Wahoobi", instead of "Wahabi", in the previous sentence was intentional. An American politician once said, "I don't care what they say about me, as long as they spell my name right.". Well, when I find someone truly contemptible, I don't even spell their name right. Seriously, Wahoobis show no respect for Western Culture, so why should we respect theirs? Even other Muslims don’t like Wahoobis much, because Wahoobis have

Cato the Elder: The Planting Ritual , c. 160 BCE The offering is to be made in this way: Offer to Jupiter Dapalis a cup of wine of whatever size you wish. Observe the day as a holiday for the oxen, their drivers, and those who make the offering. When you make the offering, say as follows: "Jupiter Dapalis, since it is due and proper that a cup of wine be offered you, in my home among my family, for your sacred feast; for that reason, be honored by this feast that is offered you." Wash your hands, and then take the wine and say: "Jupiter Dapalis, be honored by this feast that is offered to you and be honored by the wine that is placed before you." If you wish, make an offering to Vesta. The feast of Jupiter consists of roasted meat and an urn of wine. Present it to Jupiter religiously, in the proper form. After the offering is made, plant millet, panic grass, garlic, and lentils.

Ancient History Sourcebook: Plutarch: Carneades Visit to Rome
from Life of Cato the Elder
In 155 BCE, the Athenians sent a delegation to Rome. It included three philosophers, among them Carneades. He was an important member of Plato's school, the Academy, which by this time had become a center of skepticism. Carneades shocked Rome by arguing convincingly for one argument one day, and then refuting all his arguments the following day. Cato the Censor reacted unfavorably - all three philosophers were sent back to Athens. This text is part of the Internet Ancient History Sourcebook . The Sourcebook is a collection of public domain and copy-permitted texts related to medieval and Byzantine history. © Paul Halsall May 1998
