CATO the Elder
234 - 149 BC
Roman Statesman
Marcus Porcius Cato, the Elder was a soldier, orator and historian, whose stern morality became proverbial. He was the first Roman author to write in Latin. Cato firmly opposed foreign, that is Greek, influences, believing that they would corrupt his people. He was proud of fighting in the Punic Wars against Hannibal of Carthage. He ended his every speech in the Senate with the words, 'Carthage must be destroyed'. His influence helped bring the Third Punic War, which led to the destruction of Carthage.

The Conflict Between Cato and Scipio
by Richard L. Trumbo, St. Catherine's School A variety of causes, some petty and some consequential, contributed to the differences between Cato and Scipio. One of the lesser issues was their respective attitudes towards Greek culture. Plutarch tells us that Cato spoke to a Greek audience through an interpreter, even though he was capable of addressing them in Greek. He also reportedly warned his son, "that if ever the Romans became infected with the literature of Greece, they would lose their empire." Cato seems to have been especially concerned by the allure of excessive fondness for Greek ways which would undermine traditional Roman mores. In a speech during his consulship opposing the repeal of the Lex Oppimia (a sumptuary law restricting women's clothing and displays of wealth), Cato reportedly argued: ...as our empire increases - and already we have crossed into Greece and Asia (regions full of all kinds of sensual allurements) and are even laying hands on the treasures of kings - I am the more alarmed lest these things should capture us instead of our capturing them; those statues brought from Syracuse, believe me, were hostile standards brought against this city. And now I hear far too many people praising the ornaments of Corinth and Athens, and jeering at the terracotta antefixes of the Roman gods.

Pliny, in his Natural History, says that the first doctor (medicus) to come to Rome was Arcagathus, who arrived from the Greek Peloponnese in 219 BCE and was well received. Arcagathus was accorded the rights of citizenship and a medical shop was set up at state expense for his use. Prior to this time, Rome had no physicians and only home remedies were used. Because Arcagathus was an expert wound surgeon (uulnerarius), he immediately became popular; however his popularity did not last. His vigorous use of the knife and cautery soon earned him the title “Executioner” (Carnifex). From there it was downhill for the medical cause in Rome. Over 100 years lapsed before we hear that another Greek physician (Asclepiades of Bithynia, ca. 100 BCE) had taken up residence in Rome.

Tiber welcomes Asclepius in the form of a snake. In 295 BCE a plague ravaged Rome and the Romans decided to recruit the services of the Greek god of medicine. No doubt the Romans had heard of the success of the medical shrines in the Hellenistic world and hoped some of this power might be transferred to Rome. A temple to Ascelpius was built on the island in the Tiber, not inside Rome, and this was a reflection of the Roman official suspicion of foreign gods. The pestilence soon went away and the popularity of the new cult was assured. The introduction of Asclepius is the first event of “medical history” in Rome. Before the arrival of Arcagathus, early Roman medicine was agriculturally based, having its spirit derived from the farm. Early authors of agricultural treatises, such as Cato the Elder and Columella, both from the early second century BCE, had as much to say about medicine, or home remedies, as they had to say about growing seasons, animal husbandry and slave discipline. In Cato’s time, the pater familias, or head of the family, was the dispenser of remedies to his household because his knowledge of the farm and its needs qualified him to deal with matters of health. Characteristic of early Roman medicine was a reliance upon one or two remedies. According to Pliny, the

Carthage was a rival empire, located on the southern shores of the Mediterranean with colonies extending up into modern day Spain and Sicily. As the two empires expanded and grew, their competition for trade and land became more intense. Like two bullies living on the same block, it was obvious to everyone that one day they would have to duke it out. "Ergo Cartenga delenda est!" (therefore, Carthage must be destroyed!). When the war finally came, it lasted for ten years. Hannibal, a Carthaginian general, crossed the Alps with war elephants (this time it was Victor Mature, not Russell Crowe) and it was a near thing for Rome. But they ultimately prevailed and the danger of annihilation was removed. That is, until Sparticus came along (i.e., Kirk Douglas). When I first read of this noble Roman and his unlimited energy and single-mindedness in pursuing a course of action that, although unpopular, was the right thing to do, I found myself hoping that if ever equally challenged I too would be able to arise to the occasion.

Older updates July 16, 2002 It has been long since the last update of this site. Every time I have planned to make updates, something has come up. That, and some lack of motivation has kept me away from the site for two months. As usual, I wanted to make up for it by updating my site with new formulas for age 17 as the new round was commencing, but again I find real life getting in the way. Due to lots of work at the job and too few to do it because people are on holidays, I find my spare time reduced to a ridiculous level. I will also leave for my own vacation on Saturday, and will be gone for two weeks except for a brief return home in between the two weeks. I'll do my best to get the site updated as soon as possible, but as you understand, there is no way the site will be as quickly updated as it has been for the last 4-5 rounds. May 13, 2002
