He is also interested in the literary study of Greek liturgical poetry and in particular the work of the sixth-century Greek hymnographer Romanos the Melodist.

Poets Who've Shaped My Work and Life
Although I respect and admire hundreds of poets, from the ancients to contemporary writers, this is a short list of the poets who have had the greatest influence on me, personally and poetically. Charles Baudelaire Joseph Brodsky Charles Bukowski C.P. Cavafy ... Walt Whitman Charles Baudelaire Baudelaire was the single most influential poet for me, from my late teens into my late thirties. So influential that I wrote about him in both my college senior honors paper and my Masters' thesis. When I worked on Wall Street, I kept his poems in a top drawer of my desk and would read it during breaks to keep sane. I still reread him several times a year. Perhaps I recognized a sexually kindred soul; or perhaps I was simply mesmerized by his imaginative genius. He remains one of the most daring, dramatic, mystical, and yet cynical poets of all times. "Fleurs du Mal" is the absolute must-read work, though I also highly recommend his prose poems.

[Syllabus for Duke graduate-seminar version of "Queer Performativity," taught in Fall, 1993]
Eve Kosofsky Sedgwick 327 Allen Building Office Hours: Tues. 10-12
English 381.04 Preliminary Syllabus: Queer Performativity
The term "performativity" has achieved considerable currency in contemporary discourses of gender, sexuality, and critical writing. Yet its bearings and potential are still highly ambiguous. Seeming to carry the authority of two quite different discourses, that of theatrical performance on the one hand, of speech-act theory and deconstruction on the other, it nonetheless means very differently in each. The stretch between theatrical and deconstructive meanings of "performative" seems to span the polarities of, at either extreme, the extroversion of the actor vs. the introversion of the signifier; the supposedly total efficiency of advertising and propaganda vs. the self-referential signifier's dis linkage of cause from effect. This course will begin from the hypothesis that performativity and performance constitute a theoretically and politically significant space of mutual overlap and mutual redefinitionsomewhere in a neighborhood called queer. Our explorations will be based on theoretical readings from J. L. Austin, Frantz Fanon, Judith Butler, Esther Newton, and others, but will also include reading of literary texts, viewing of performance tapes, and consideration of the forms of performativity involved in identity-based political activism.
