I am a writer, editor, scientist, and teacher. I began my professional life as an astrophysicist and mathematician, teaching astronomy at Michigan State University and Cornell University, and working in the Astronaut Training Division at NASA's Johnson Space Center. After earning my MFA in creative writing, I moved into a career in publishing, becoming a senior editor at Bantam Doubleday Dell, where I created and launched the Abyss imprint of psychological horror, for which I won the World Fantasy Award, and the Cutting Edge imprint of literary fiction. I also ran the science fiction/fantasy publishing program. In addition, I edited a wide range of fiction and nonfiction. I worked with such authors as William F. Nolan, Robert Anton Wilson, Dennis Etchison, Joan Vinge, Tanith Lee, Kathe Koja, Poppy Z. Brite, J.M. Dillard, David Wingrove, Barry Gifford, Patrick McCabe, Syd Field, Phil Farrand, and Peter Dickinson. In my eight years in New York publishing, I edited numerous award-winning and best-selling authors and gained a reputation for discovering and nurturing new writers.

Jeanne Cavelos Interview
Jeanne Cavelos is the author of the Babylon 5 trilogy, The Passing of the Techno-Mages , and the novel The Shadow Within . She has also written The Science of Star Wars The Science of The X-Files , several works of short fiction, articles, and essays. In addition to writing, Ms. Cavelos has worked as an editor, scientist, and teacher. I conducted this interview with Jeanne Cavelos shortly after the release of Casting Shadows , the first volume of her trilogy. Mike Helba: How did your experience writing The Passing of the Techno-Mages differ from your experience writing The Shadow Within Jeanne Cavelos: I think there were two main areas that differed. First, my interactions with Joe worked a bit differently with the two projects. The Shadow Within started out as a proposal that I wrote, which was about twenty pages long. Basically, I made up the story of what I thought had happened to Anna Sheridan and the Icarus and John Sheridan and the Agamemnon I very much appreciated the freedom Joe gave me. I believe that tie-in novels can achieve excellence, can be art, and I take the writing of them very seriously. As a writer himself, I think Joe understands that to create a powerful book, a writer needs some artistic freedom. Rehashing old plots and following restrictive formulas won't create a great book. The writer has to be allowed to contribute that creative spark, to remain within the given universe but to, in some ways, make it her own. Otherwise the story will be dead on the page.

However, the itinerant technomage, Galen, stood out among them because he made no effort to hide the fact that he had something to hide. It is a curious contradiction that a magician, while he may never reveal his tricks, can't show that he is a magician without revealing that he has tricks. In order to effectively mystify onlookers, he must not only perform feats that defy explanation, he must make his persona as enigmatic as any of his deeds. On TV, this means he gets a lot of the best lines.
