Chicago, educated in England. After World War I, he entered the oil business in California. Bankrupt during the Depression, he published his first of many detective stories in The Black Mask magazine (1933). His novels include The Big Sleep Farewell My Lovely The High Window (1942), and Playback (1958). Well plotted and brutally realistic, Chandler's novels depict the seedy lowlife of Los Angeles. They all feature Philip Marlowe, a hard-boiled yet honorable private detective with a brash sense of humor who became the prototype for the tough guy private eye of many subsequent American detective novels. Chandler also wrote screenplays and essays. See his collected early works, ed. by M. J. Bruccoli

  • The case for Raymond Chandler The creator of Philip Marlowe has been called an imitator and a hack, but he deserves his lonely, disillusioned corner in the American literary canon. By Allen Barra A few years ago, passing through Santa Monica on the way to L.A. International, I found myself gazing at the pseudo-Mexican, stucco-ed architecture and wondering why an area I had never been anywhere near before seemed so familiar. Then I saw, for the first time, the Pacific pier where Philip Marlowe caught the water taxi to the Montecito gambling boat in "Farewell, My Lovely" and realized the source of my déjà vu: I had seen it all before through the eyes of Raymond Chandler. To paraphrase Burt Lancaster in "Atlantic City," the Pacific Ocean was really something back then. Probably no writer has evoked urban Southern California for more readers than Raymond Chandler, which is ironic, because Chandler hated L.A. at the same time he was providing us with an enduring object of nostalgia. As the cover art of the new Vintage reissues of Chandler's nine published books proves, nostalgia is a large part of Chandler's appeal. In the city that constantly renews itself without ever changing, Chandler created an astonishingly adaptable genre that continues to evolve.

Ed. by Tom Hiney and Frank MacShane. Apr. 2001. 288p. index. Atlantic Monthly; dist. by Publishers Group West, $25 (0-87113-786-0). 813. Chandler, whom Time once dubbed the "poet laureate of the loner," was a recluse whose human dealings consisted primarily of long letters dictated, usually, while drunk. This is the third collection of Chandler letters (following R aymond Chandler Speaking in 1962 and The Selected Letters of Raymond Chandler in 1981) and represents never-before-published correspondence (including his first letter to the publisher of The Big Sleep , letters to friends, and letters to Erle Stanley Gardner) and unpublished early writings, which give us, among other treasures, an inquiry to an attorney about the habits of private eyes, a sketch of his meeting with Lucky Luciano, an eyewitness account of a 1940s Oscar ceremony, and numerous critiques of other mystery writers. Hiney, one of Chandler’s biographers, and the late MacShane, who edited The Selected Letters , have organized their material into “Five Acts,” centering on Chandler's struggles with and thoughts on the writing craft and the writing life, extending from 1909 to two weeks before his death, in 1959. Each section is preceded by helpful biographical notes. This collection includes one of Chandler's last letters, in which he wrote that he pictured Philip Marlowe "always in a lonely room, in lonely streets, puzzled but never quite defeated." The same picture emerges of Chandler in this masterfully edited collection. A must for serious readers of hard-boiled fiction. —

Knopf/Everyman, $27.50 (0-375-41500-9). “The front of her dress was a sudden welter of blood. Her eyes opened and shut, opened and stayed open.” That sentence, from Raymond Chandler’s 1935 story “Spanish Blood,” says volumes about the history of mystery fiction. Death was mostly an offstage plot device in the works of Agatha Christie and other English authors during the so-called Golden Age of the detective story; American pulp writers made guns and blood their stock-in-trade, but most of them knew little about style, and their work didn’t circulate much beyond bus stations and drugstores. Then Chandler, getting his start in those same pulps, began using phrases such as “sudden welter of blood,” and it was only a matter of time before the literary world took notice. This landmark collection, gargantuan in both size and significance, brings together for the first time all of Chandler’s short fiction, the raw material from which he later fashioned all his celebrated novels, from The Big Sleep through The Long Goodbye Bill Ott (Booklist/September 1, 2002)

    Raymond Chandler
Raymond Thornton Chandler wird am 23. Juli 1888 in Chicago geboren.

Hi-Fi Bliss Peter's homepage Select pieces of Raymond Chandler's writing. from The Big Sleep I was neat, clean, shaved and sober, and I didn't care who knew it. She was twenty or so, small and delicately put together, but she looked durable. I could see, even on that short acquaintence, that thinking was always going to be a bother to her. A few locks of dry white hair clung to his scalp, like wild flowers fighting for life on a bare rock. I sat down on the edge of a deep soft chair and looked at Mrs. Regan. She was worth a stare. She was trouble. She was stretched out on a modernistic chaise-lounge with her slippers off, so I stared at her legs in the sheerest silk stockings. They seemed to be arranged to stare at. They were visible to the knee and one of them well beyond. The knees were dimpled, not bony and sharp. The calves were beautiful, the ankles long and slim and with enough melodic line for a tone poem. "My God you big dark brute! I ought to throw a Buick at you."

The Raymond Chandler Papers: Selected Letters and Non-Fiction

Edited by Tom Hiney and Frank MacShane Buy it at BOL According to Tom Hiney, who has already written a well-received biography of Raymond Chandler, his letters 'are an unusually honest and freewheeling journey into the mind of a man who had seen a lot, read a lot, drunk a lot, thought a lot and steered perilously close to insanity in the process...' This is a useful advertisement for a volume that's basically for the fans, for whom Chandler's insomniac ramblings, dictated in the small hours to his Mexican secretary, are the essential commentary on what Chandler himself described as 'a rather forlorn sort of life'.
